Police, what area's of town need more attention?

As requested by another poster;

What are areas of the town that you think need more police attention?
Whether it be traffic violations, or something else?

Railroad Crossing

Does anyone know why CSX has placed heavy concrete barriers at the Main Street crossing in downtown Portland? In the past, they have resurfaced other crossings, but they have never used concrete barriers. It almost looks like they are planning to permanently close the crossing. Just curious.

Traffic

Hello,
My name is Daniel Suddeath, I'm a reporter with the Portland Progressive. I was hoping to get some feedback about traffic issues for an upcoming story. I'm pretty new to Portland, but it seems for a town of this size there is a great deal of traffic especially downtown. I recently heard the mayor comment about a survey and the number of semi trucks that drive through Portland. I'm wondering if people think this is a problem or not? Also, would adding turn arrows at some of the lights on Broadway help? Please e-mail us at pprogressive@bellsouth.net or respond to this blog. I can also be reached at 325-3001.
Thank You

Portland's good ole' boys

accident.jpg
What is it about this town and vehicles? Young people doing wheelies down the street on motor cycles driving about 70 mph or driving 80 to 90 mph down back roads. On Wednesday The Portland Progressive became victim to a high school student driving down side roads into the highway like Luke and Bo Duke. A teenager drove this Ford Focus and his two friends through a stop sign on Victor Reiter Parkway and into the path of a van delivering our newspapers. I came upon the scene of the accident and recognized one of the victims as one of our own. She was pretty banged up but she had her seatbelt. None of the kids had seatbelts and luckily were not too badly hurt. They could have killed themselves and killed someone very close to us at The Progressive. As most everybody in the community knows someone was killed this weekend. It was a 28-year-old mother of two and everybody I've talked to told me what a wonderful person she was. It is really sad.

Unfortunately the cause of this wreck may have had a familiar cause.

Above are bottles from the scene of the wreck that were found around the pickup truck that hit the above car. They were put into evidence by the police officers Sunday. (Unfortunately this picture didn't get incorporated in our layout like I wanted, but that is my fault because I was running behind Tuesday.) The Dukes of Hazzard movie hits the theaters next weekend. Let's hope these kids don't find any more inspiration from this movie remake of the television series. There is enough of that already here in this city's car culture.

Paving Hwy 52

I was a little surprised today to see a road crew ripping up the pavement on Hwy 52 east from Hwy 109. The pavement looked like it was already in pretty good shape to me.

Does anybody know how much this project is costing and how long it will last? Thanks.
