Police, what area's of town need more attention?

As requested by another poster;

What are areas of the town that you think need more police attention?
Whether it be traffic violations, or something else?

Vacationing Close to Home

With the price of gas these days soaring and Summer vacationing knocking at the door, I thought it might be a good topic to start where everyone can post their favorite places to visit that are close by. This might help others in planning a summer vacation that won't cost a fortune to travel to. More and more people are moving here from other states, I'm sure they would appreciate your input on places to visit in TN or KY as well. If your favorite spots have a web site, perhaps you could include that in the posting.

Happy Posting - Judy

Is the Kerley Building a Health Risk

Is our City saying Don't Ask Don't Tell

This months council meeting included discussions on moving public works to a rented building across the street from city hall which resulted in the issue of the Kerley building (old Farmers Bank Building) on Main Street being brought up. And the fact that the city owns it with 8,000 sq feet of space and it isn't being utilized much by the city.

The issue of that buildings condition quickly became the topic of conversation with the possibility of mold, aspestos, etc, etc being addressed once again and they didn't want employees working in that building not knowing the degree of health issues that could arise.

My concern is not with this being brought up, but the outcome of where it ended.

One of the Councilmen wanted a study done once and for all to determine if indeed there were health hazards within this building, what degree they might be, and what it would cost to get them fixed if there were any. Sounds logical to me, however, this suggestion was met with basically WE don't need to know......... if there is health risks in that building we would have to lock it up and would not be able to be use it for the various things it is currently used for, example: Traffic Court, Boy Scouts, Church (which will soon be moved out), Some Insurance company, etc If they are not able to hold traffic court there they would have to find somewhere else which they don't have that space anywhere else.

What are your thoughts on how this is being handled?
Does the City have an obligation to find out if indeed people are being exposed to possible health hazards?
Should they just shut it down completely or give it back, which will place a further burden of space on the city?

Comcast Cable Channel 3 repeatidly broadcasts this meeting for a few days after the meeting, if you haven't already done so, please take the time to watch it.

City girl with another hay question....

Ok Portland residents,

I previously asked where to find hay for decorating for Halloween. Now my question is what do I do with it now? Can anyone use it? Is there a certain place to bring it?

Visualize and realize

StrawberryPatch.jpg
This is an illustration that my wife made for a story I wrote a couple of weeks ago about the city mounting an aggressive campaign to bring retail businesses to Portland. These empty buildings around town are a real eyesore, especially the former Burger King building. Portland Economic Development Coordinator Denise Geminden told me in an interview that she would really like a cafe and boutique that serves fresh strawberry shortcake every day. Inspired by that thought, I took a picture of the Burger King building and asked my wife to do her magic on the computer and the above building is the result. What resturants or retail establishments would you like to see in Portland? Please respond.

A "Berry" good idea

Strawberrytower.jpg
Portland was criticized by a state official during the city's Three-Star review for not taking the advice of Former Mayor Fred White to turn a water tower on the interstate into a large strawberry. Following is what I reported in The Portland Progressive. (By the way, the graphic was created by my wife Amber, a detail we forgot to include in the article.)
Ron Cooper, state planner and a review committee member for the Tennessee Economic and Community Development Commission in the city's Three Star application, said during the city's Three Star review that Fred White, former mayor and director of Portland community development, had made that suggestion. "Fred had one of the best ideas I've ever heard in my life. While building the water tower on the interstate he suggested making into a huge strawberry out of it," Cooper said. Cooper remarked that having a giant strawberry on the interstate would create a landmark for the city that people would refer to on the interstate and would draw people off the interstate. "The city cut off its nose to spite its face by not building that strawberry... You need to get that strawberry on I-65."
When I gradutated from college in Lincoln, Neb. I took a job an hour's drive west of Lincoln in York, Neb. While I was there they built a new water tower overlooking I-80 and one businessman came up with the suggestion to paint the water tower like a big hot air balloon. He rallied the community to raise the money to do the job and this is the result:
York, Neb. Water Tower
The water tower has become a landmark for travelers and a symbol of the community. As you can see, the city and the newspaper both feature the tower in their masthead. They even introduced a hot air balloon event for their annual Yorkfest festival.

By the way, kudos to Charlie for starting this weblog. I'm looking for a good healthy exchange of ideas develop here.

UPDATE:
We wouldn't be the first city to create a strawberry water tower. Here is one from Poteet, Texas website promoting Texas roadside attractions. Here also is a site with unusual watertowers.
