Vacationing Close to Home
With the price of gas these days soaring and Summer vacationing knocking at the door, I thought it might be a good topic to start where everyone can post their favorite places to visit that are close by. This might help others in planning a summer vacation that won't cost a fortune to travel to. More and more people are moving here from other states, I'm sure they would appreciate your input on places to visit in TN or KY as well. If your favorite spots have a web site, perhaps you could include that in the posting.
Happy Posting - Judy

What does everyone do at this time of year as citizens, as homeowners or tenants to spruce up, clean up, or just every year spring cleaning that makes a place your castle?
Maybe someone is looking for tips & tricks, on how to do something.
Maybe you are considering something new for your home and want opinions from others.
Maybe someone has a business/service either of theirs or someone they've used that they would like to give a small plug to, here's the place! Looking forward to hearing from everyone. Happy Posting - Judy
I thought if we set some generalized guides on this post it would make it easier to find things that may interest you without reading thru them all, of course if you want to read all comments, wonderful!! Need your help.
"George A Greene Memorial"
Today is the anniversary of my Dad's home going. I know where he is and he is in such a better place right now And I know he is dancing with my Jesus.
Mr Charles Myers told me this would be OK. So, I am asking you for help. I'm not good asking for help. I trust God to take care of everything, but I feel HE is telling me to do this. I hope I'm right. = )
We did not run in the papers in time. So, we still run into people in town saying they did not know he was gone. They tell my Mom (who will be 80 on her next Birthday in Nov) if she needs anything let them know. Well this was the best way to let everyone know what is needed and if they can help. As I stated my mom is going to be 80 this year. She misses my Daddy, but she is a strong woman. Her money was cut way down. My Daddy was Retired Navy. But that doesn't seem to go for much these days. The Navy took over half my Dad's check away from her. And Social Security took one of her checks away. I don't get that. I know there is one less person for food, etc... But she still has the same bills. They just don't go away because he did. THEY need to take better care of our elderly. Because they are the ones that help build this nation. But, that's for another blog. = )
Just to give a little back ground. He became really sick in Oct. 2006, and was in and out of the hospitals and rehab for 6 months. We were told it was bad, but they could get him through. So that's what we believed. But, that wasn't the case. (Another blog about hospital later) On April 25th, 2007 he went home to be with Jesus. It crushed us and especially my mom. They were just 3 months shy of their 54th wedding anniversary. We miss him so much. Two days after he was buried. I had a birthday. That was the hardest day for me. He always called me and wished me A "Happy Birthday, Pumpkin seed" That's what he called me. That day at work my mind kept going to his call. Thinking he will be calling soon. But, it never came. Anyway, what I am in need of is help. Any help anyone can give. There is A LOT of repairs that needs to be done on my mom’s house. I wanted to just get her a nice trailer. But, her memories are in the house and she doesn't want anything else to change and I can understand that. There are bills. She didn't have much insurance and what she got went on the funeral. Which we still owe on. But, they are letting us make payments. I don't have much money myself. But, I help her as much as I can. We are making it but, it is really hard. Especially with the prices of everything going up. (electricity, gas, kerosene, etc...)
Here is what we put in the paper:
"George Greene, a Loving, Caring and Faithful Husband, Father, Grand Father, Great Grand Father, went home to be with Jesus yesterday, 4-25-07. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Jones) Greene, Portland,TN., three children, Donna (Greene) Alexander of Flagstaff, Arizona, Gary Greene of Portland, TN and Pamela Greene of Hendersonville, TN, seven grandchildren (Cliff, Jason, Chryste, William, Jessica, Michael, Sarah, Brittney) and two Great Grandchildren (Christian and Corinne)
He was Retired Navy (21 Years) and was the son of Olive and Frank Greene (deceased) of Providence, RI. He will be missed, but he is his dancing with Jesus now. No more pain. We all love you!
There is a Memorial Fund set up at Volunteer State Bank, 101 Hwy 52 W, Portland, TN. (615-325-9257) “George Greene Memorial Fund”
We received a few donations and for that we were so grateful and thankful. We still have it set up. I'm praying that there is help somewhere out there. So, if anyone wishes to donate. It would be very much appreciated. You can donate to the memorial fund or send to P O Box 348, Hendersonville, TN 37077-0348 What ever is easiest for you.
Also, if you could provide your name when making the donations, so we make thank you and pray for you. If you would rather remain anonymous that is OK too.
If you could pass this along to everyone you know that would be so great. As I stated I am not good at asking for help. I really hate it. But, I have no other choice.
I know God will provide and talk to the right people. I also am in desperate need of some counseling for a lawyer. I need to get my mom's will and place in order and I have questions and do not know where to begin. So, if anyone can help in that area also. OK, now that I have written a book. I thank you all for your time and for Mr Myers help in getting this out to you.
For more information on exactly what is needed, you can go to my space page and communicate directly with me. link is below.

Again, I THANK YOU all so mush for listening at at least. May God Blesse you in so many ways.

Our 1st Strawberry Festival
We will be arriving at our new house (north of town off 109) on or about April 21st. I would like as much information about the Strawberry Festival as you can give me. I have been to the City and Chambers web sites and read them with great interest. But I would like to hear from those of you that has been there done that. Hints like where to park and where to go what time should we arrive for the concert. I have a handicapped daughter and she can't walk a long ways. We are so excited to be able to attend our first of many Strawberry Festivals.

MY Space - Good, Bad or Ugly?
After seeing the report on TV last evening about the 12 Y.O. Sumner County girl that met her rapist on MY Space, I thought this would be a good time to bring up this topic on the blog.
What are your experiences with MY Space?
Should there be better security measures that not allow under age members?
What do you do in monitoring under age computer users in your household?
The stories that come out about My Space are horrific, yet some good has come as well, what, and who should be responsible for policing this site if any? Lets hear your thoughts, experiences and suggestions.

Will Extra Tax Rebate Help?
With all the hoopla surrounding the "stimulus package" that was recently signed off on by the Congress, the Senate and the President, I am curious to know what everyday folks are actually planning to do with the additional money. And if people decide to pay bills or save it for a rainy day, rather than going on a spending spree (which is what the politicians are hoping for), what good is it going to do?
Does anyone really believe this will thwart a recession?

Adult Bullies in the Workplace

From the Canada Safety Council:
***************************************************
Profile of a Bully
Adult bullies, like their schoolyard counterparts, tend to be insecure people with poor or non-existent social skills and little empathy. They turn this insecurity outwards, finding satisfaction in their ability to attack and diminish the capable people around them.
A workplace bully subjects the target to unjustified criticism and trivial fault-finding. In addition, he or she humiliates the target, especially in front of others, and ignores, overrules, isolates and excludes the target.
If the bully is the target's superior, he or she may: set the target up for failure by setting unrealistic goals or deadlines, or denying necessary information and resources; either overload the target with work or take all work away (sometimes replacing proper work with demeaning jobs); or increase responsibility while removing authority.
Regardless of specific tactics, the intimidation is driven by the bully's need to control others.
***************************************************
Does anybody have any good stories about adult bullies at work? I would like to hear them, and I would like to hear how you dealt with the situation. Personally, I think adult bullying at work, is a huge problem that is seldom discussed.
In telling your story, please do not use peoples' names or company names. Use a generic name such as Mr. X or Ms. Y. Thanks.

Due To Extreme Fuel Prices, I Am No Longer Able To Provide This Service
There have been a number of occasions where bloggers have made comments about the lack of places to recycle in the Portland area. Volunteer Recycling on Morningside Drive takes metals ( and they pay you for them), but I am not aware of any place locally that takes anything other than metal, and Volunteer's hours aren't convenient for everyone, so . . . Starting February 1st, I will start providing a FREE recycling pick-up service to Portland area residents. Yes, FREE! (My payment comes from selling the items in bulk to recycling companies) It is hard, dirty work, with a payoff that has more to do with wanting to "do my part" than it does with money, but I will make enough that I can do it without charging the people who are simply wanting to keep their junk out of the landfills . . . and still make a small profit. I HOPE at some point in the not too distant future that I will be able to provide a "drop-off" location as well, but for now I can only schedule pick-ups.
For more information about what I am offering to pick up, just click on the “continue reading” link below. If you have something that isn't on the list, feel free to call me and I'll see what I can do.

Goodbye Daniel.....
Daniel has been a good friend to me and to this community. Even though our politics differed quite abit, he was always fair in his reporting.
He immediately took an interest in our town and was always there to contribute.
Daniel participated in this blog and always brought some intersting ideas and always he brought his conviction.
This thread would be a good way of saying thanks and good luck to all that he does.
Thank you Daniel and may God bless you,

PBS Television -- Children's Shows

I was in the waiting room of my doctor's office yesterday. The TV was on channel 8 (the local PBS station in Nashville), and a show called "Teletubbies" was on. Three of the telebubbies (see photo) were sitting on stools around a table. Dipsy (the green one) was in front of a control panel with several levers. Here's what happened:
1. Dipsy slowly moved a random lever to a new position.
2. A light beside that lever came on.
3. Dispy put his (her?) hands over his mouth and went "Uh-oh."
4. The other three fell off their stools, and rolled around on the floor laughing.
Having never seen the show before, I figured when Dispy moved another lever, something else would happen. Nope! The same sequence of four events happened over and over and over again. The whole thing repeated about 15 times.
I am not a child any more, but my mind was numb after I watched Dipsy move 15 levers and the exact same things happened over and over. Is this kind of stuff actually good for small children to watch?

Time on the Roof
I notice that McKendree Memorial United Methodist Church on Portland Blvd. has installed four loudspeakers on their roof. At the top of every hour, the loudspeakers play the "Big Ben" chimes followed by the hour (e.g., at 10 o'clock there are 10 "bongs"). I'm just curious to hear peoples' opinions on this. Is it a good thing? A bad thing? What do the neighbors think?
Actually, this raises some interesting philosophical issues. What if the church played Christmas carols all day? What if a "new-generation" church played rap music over their loudspeakers. What if a mosque called people to prayer five times per day over their loudspeakers in Portland? What would the reaction of neighbors be if an individual placed loudspeakers on his roof?
Actually, not much is happening on the blog this week, and I thought this might be a fun topic!

I will no longer be posting "Weekly" Around the town topics, While I feel they have performed well for a place of general discussions I also feel it has provided an area for much negativity, bashing, etc etc. that perhaps doesn't need to be started all over again each week!

Blog Questions / Suggestions your thoughts needed
A couple months back I started a weekly thread for "Around the town" as suggested by a fellow blogger, this has worked out fairly well for general discussion. The administrator of the blog, Charlie has said he would like to see more specific threads as well brought to the blog to allow for topics to be more focally in line to a specific topic. All for it!
A recent poster has noted that they don't like the weekly "Around the Town" threads because it bumps other threads down the page too quickly. This is the way this blog is set up and to the best of my knowledge it cannot be set up any differently.
What I am asking is
Do you want the "Around the town" posts discontinued?
Is there another way we could accomplish keeping more up to date information up front? NO, other than not starting any new threads.
One of the things I thought of is maybe making a MONTHLY posting for
Around the Town - Sports - City Government - Schools and any other general specific topic that may be needed for monthly communications. Different authors would each take a topic they would start. We would still have other specific topics too that will come around from time to time and they will still get bumped down the page, maybe just not as fast.
What are your thoughts on any of this and do you have any other suggestions. Please post them here.

20 Happiness Tips to Remember
The following article was published in Happiness magazine a few years ago. Sometimes, when I have to deal with a particularly unpleasant person, I pull the article out of my desk drawer and reread it.
20 Happiness Tips to Remember
By James Mouzon, Jr.
Hagerstown, Maryland
1. Compliment three people every day.
2. Watch a sunrise at least once a year.
3. Be the first to say, "Hello."
4. Live beneath your means.
5. Treat everyone like you want to be treated.
6. Never give up on anybody. Miracles happen.
7. Forget the Joneses.
8. Never deprive someone of hope. It may be all they have.
9. Pray not for things, but for wisdom and courage.
10. Be tough-minded but tenderhearted.
11. Be kinder than necessary.
12. Don't forget, a person's greatest emotional need is to feel appreciated.
13. Keep your promises.
14. Learn to show cheerfulness even when you don't feel like it.
15. Remember that overnight success usually takes about 15 years.
16. Leave everything better than you found it.
17. Remember that winners do what losers don't want to do.
18. When you arrive at your job in the morning, let the first thing you say brighten everyone's day.
19. Don't rain on other people's parades.
20. Never waste an opportunity to tell someone you love them.
Happiness magazine, by the way, is published by Wilks Publications right here in Portland, Tennessee. Thank you, Gilbert.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."
So . . . Are we free to say whatever we want, about whoever we want, whenever we want? Or are there limits? At what point does free speech encroach on another person’s rights? When is it slander or libel . . . Or harassment? Just because something is a fact, is everything fair game? Is there a distinction between public officials and private citizens?
To summarize what I am asking : Does the freedom to say what we want leave us free from the consequences of what we say?
It is my hope that we can have an intelligent debate on this issue. However I do not take responsibility for any comments other than my own. All editing and/or deletions will be at the sole discretion of the blog administrator.

NOTIFICATION
I have shut down temporarily the last 2 (Around the Town) topics to comments that I have started until Charlie the Administrator of this Blog comes here to review what is going on. (He has been notified) You all can be angry at me if you like, that is fine, I feel things are getting out of control and perhaps a break in the action is warranted. You can also ask Charlie to remove me from being a Blog Author if you want, go for it, I would rather that happen than feel responsibility for the controversy that is taking place on this blog.

Asking for your idea's for topics of discussion.
I know with the warmer weather we find less time to be blogging and when hashing over the same things over and over threads have a tendancy to go dormant. At times like these it is important to have fresh ideas to keep the interest going on the site.
I will be more than glad to start a topic that YOU would like to see addressed, Give me your thoughts below.

Today's Real Estate Market - What do you think?
In my travels around town and surrounding communities I've noticed more and more homes that have gone into foreclosure. You can hardly miss them, windows posted or boarded up. Not to mention the long lists in the paper or online sites.
Has the market topped out?
Is the Economy to blame?
Are people getting in over their heads?
Are the Mortgage companies relaxing their once strict guidelines, becoming more like auto loan companies where just about anyone can get financing?
Who/What's to blame if anyone/anything?
I've also noticed the cost of rentals have also skyrocketed over the last few years.
Is all this good or bad for our community?
Open for discussion, what are your thoughts?

The GOOD things I like about living in Portland are!!
I am starting this post out of response to an article I read in this weeks Leader where a gentleman wrote about how the blog is filled with such negativity about our town.
I'm not saying I agree with everything he said, everyone is entitled to their opinions and many see things differently than others.
Sooooooooooooooo, lets lighten up this post with all the good / positive things you like about our town.

Pet Peeves
I have so many pet peeves I don't know where to start. For example, today at Wal-Mart I saw cars parked in the handicapp areas that did NOT have a handicapp license plate nor one of those tags hanging from their window. I also observed a lady leaving her cart in an empty parking space next to her car when she was no more than 20 steps from the "Return Carts Here" area. Have people gotten so lazy that they can't walk a few extra steps?
What is it in this town that people feel that do NOT have to use their blinkers? To me this is so rude. If you are going to turn please have the courtesy to let other drivers know.
Why do people feel the need to have a cell phone stuck to their ear? Do they feel it makes them look cool? Do they have to drive and talk on one and not pay attention? Is is necessary to talk loudly on one in a restaurant? How did society ever survive without them. Granted I do keep one in my car but it's out of necessity not for chit chat.
I could go on and on and on and on.........................
What's you pet peeve??

Pharmacy Problems?
Has anyone been having problems with CVS Pharmacy Lately? I have and it has been so bad that I am switching Pharmacies. I had a very sick child and had dropped off his presciption at 11:30 am. I am was assured by the Pharmacist that they had the medication and it would be ready in an hour. Well, when i got there at 4:30 pm to pick up the medicine I was told that they did not have any presciptions for him. They told me that they had lost them. They wanted to know my doctors name. Well it was to late for that the doctor was already closed. I waited for 30 minutes for them to try and FIND the presciption, with no luck. They took my name and number and told me that they would just call me when they found it. I went home furious. I had a child who a severe ear infection and bronchitis/phenomia. Finally an hour later I got the call that they had found it. When I arrived to pick up the medicine I heard two other people who had gotten their medicine and it was either the wrong kind or they forgot to give them part of their prescription. What kind of place are they running? I hope that they realize that they are messing with peoples lives. Just wondering if anyone else ad any problems?

AT&T

All of the wire services are reporting that AT&T purchased BellSouth today. I wonder what, if any, effect this will have on services available to Tennessee residents. I would certainly like to see some form of Broadband Internet made available to everyone in the state.

Verizon Wireless

As a Verizon Wireless customer, I can really relate to this!
Most of my time, I am in a line between Portland and Red Boiling Springs. I pretty much am stuck with Verizon Wireless because, at least, we can get "some" reception sometimes.
The cell phone technology in the United States is truly sad. Thomas L. Friedman, author of The World Is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-first Century wrote:
"I have this sort of inside joke in the book where I say that I'm going to run for president on the one-issue ticket: that if elected I promise that we will have cell phone service as good as Ghana within four years, and cell phone service as good as Japan in eight years, provided Japan agrees to stand still."
"Because we are really behind. And the government's focused on taking apart the New Deal, instead of redefining what the New Deal should be."

Drake's Creek
Can anyone tell me where the water in Drake's Creek originates? (Obviously, it has nothing to do with the Drake's Creek in Hendersonville as that is way lower than Portland!)
Historical marker 3A 171 "Fountain Head" talks about a "large spring" near Drake's Creek.
Is the spring the original source of the water? If so, is there a way to walk or drive to see the spring?
Just curious. Thanks!

A Testimonial: Sidewalks Are Hard!
Yesterday, as I was walking to Portland City Hall, I fell over this "step" in the sidewalk. Let me tell you, sidewalks are hard and they hurt! Fortunately, I did not break anything -- just a few scrapes and bruises and a sprained wrist which is better today. (Plus I felt really stupid for falling over a step in a sidewalk!)
The picture above is a re-creation of the accident scene which was taken today; I thought it would look interesting on the blog!
As soon as I fell yesterday, a car immediately stopped and two very kind gentlemen asked if I were okay and if I needed help. This is one of the things I like about living in the country -- people helping people. I really appreciate the kindness these gentlemen showed.
When I arrivfed at City Hall, Janice Ferrett saw the blood on my hand and immediately offered Band-Aids. Janice amazes me. In addition to doing her job as City Hall receptionist (which isn't easy), she is virtually running the Chamber of Commerce during the transition period, she is answering about 1,000 questions a day about the Federated Deartment Stores warehouse coming to Portland, and she has the time to help me with my scrapes. Thanks, Janice!
Finally, I want to thank Ricky Blackburn on the Streets Department who has agreed to cover up the step in the sidewalk with some blacktop. Yeah!

How the Blog Works

Recently a blog author posted an article which has received a number of comments. One of the comments (by "Joe") was very negative.
The original blog author then posted a comment something like, "I approved the previous comment by Joe, but I started not to. ..."
Several people asked us about this. "Does he really have the authority to approve or disapprove comments about his original post?"
We would like to say that the original blog author is probably mistaken about his having approved the comment. There are only three people who have been designated webmasters on the Portland blog. Other authors (including the one discussed above) do not have the required access to approve or disapprove anybody's comment on any subject.
The webmasters periodically log into the blog where we read each comment one by one. We immediately delete comments placed by the spammers. (We got lots of comments from jerks who post links to web sites selling adult-oriented stuff. The spammers use automated programs to post to every blog they can find in the world.)
The other comments are read carefully. We do not edit comments. (If people can't spell, you know that when you read their post.) We do not delete comments unless they use profanity or advocate committing something illegal.) To date, the blog has had over 200 comments, and we have deleted exacty one (for profanity).
We think it is important that we do not censor the blog. That's what blogs are all about -- to discuss things, positive and negative.
Thank you.

Looking For Information
Alderman Callis posted an entry about what people would like to see in Portland. Many there, and it has been discussed before, talk about having a place for our young people to go. I have long felt Portland needs this. I am not too young to remember the old skating rink and Dairy Queen. However I have also seen many places like this start up and fail. So I was wondering if anybody who had been to some of these places, or want other places in the future could maybe help with getting some information.
1.) If any of you went to any of the old arcades, the miniature golf place where the pole barn place is now, or any of the other places that started up and failed, what are your opinions concerning why they failed?
2.) What do you think fair market price is per game if a bowling alley came to Portland, or a miniature golf place, or some sort of club that required a cover charge.
3.) If you could have your choice of one thing to come to Portland for the kids to do, what would it be?
4.) What kind of activities would you do with your kids if it were available in Portland?
The City does not start businesses like these in most cases, but the more information we have to provide to entrepreneurs would be helpful, I think. Who knows, maybe a blogger is out there looking into investing in something like this, and this information might help.

Bye Bye Ponderosa
The above picture is the Ponderosa restaurant in Portland when it first opened a few years ago. Sadly, the Ponderosa went out of business today, December 26, 2005. We shall miss the Ponderosa, and we shall miss a lot of the nice people who used to work there.
Why is it that the restaurants in Gallatin are booming; the restaurants in Franklin, Kentucky, are booming; and restaurants like the Ponderosa can't make it in Portland?? Portland needs to consider this question carefully.

The Hartford Insurance Company

As most people know, the Givens' home fell into a sinkhole, and their insurance claim was denied by The Hartford. The Hartford's actions are despicable.
Let's see how this works. Insurance companies don't have to cover:
** Damage as a result of war. (That's the fault of the government.)
** Damage as a result of floods. (They pawned that off on the government.)
** Damage as a result of mold. (They just said, "We're not going to cover that any more.")
** Damage as a result of terrorism. (Again, they pawned that off on the government.)
** Damage as a result of sinkholes.
The Hartford's "excuse" for the sinkhole part was that they asked the state for permission to offer sinkhole coverage for an additional fee, and the state said no. So I guess The Hartford has passed the blame for their denial of the Givens' claim onto the state.
It's interesting that the geologists said it is "extememely unlikely" that a home would fall into a sinkhole. That doesn't seem risky enough to warrant needing an optional rider at an additional fee.
I am waiting for insurance companies to issue these exclusions in the next few years:
** We no longer cover fires in homes. (That's the fault of the fire department and the cigarette industry.)
** We no longer cover theft. (That's the fault of the police department.)
** We no longer cover slip-and-falls. (That's Blue Cross's problem, not ours.)
** We no longer cover hail, lightning or tornados. (The blame for those lies solely with the National Weather Service and FEMA.)
** We longer cover risk. (That's too risky.)
A wise man once said, "The major reason for insurace companies to be in business is to collect premiums." How true.
Represenatative Mike McDonald is planning to introduce legislation requiring insurance companies to provide sinkhole coverage. I think the problem with the insurance industry goes a lot deeper than a Tennessee sinkhole.

Agressive Drivers

Am I seeing it incorrectly or are the drivers in Portland getting more agressive? I try to stick to the posted speed limits or a couple of miles over (maybe that's my problem!) and every day I see cars behind me who are following way too close. When I see a big SUV with its lights on directly behind me, I think I know how a little fish feels when he sees a shark on his tail!
Also, is anybody noticing that a lot of cars won't stop to let pedestrians cross in stores' parking lots? Drivers always seem to be in such a hurry to get somewhere!

Gas Prices
I drove from Memphis back to Portland this morning. A lot of gas stations in Memphis and all along I-40 have regular gas at around $2.56 per gallon. Here is Portland, it's still around $2.75 to $2.77.
The stations in Portland had no problem whatsoever raising prices.
Seems like we are being ripped off here in Portland .....

Southern Behavior
With all this talk about people moving here and community identities, I got to thinking about what it is to be Southern. Someone posted earlier that they did not know what a "buggy" was because they were new to the area. I thought, between all the contributors to this blog, maybe we could compile a comprehensive list of dos and don'ts to Southern living. That way, it could act as a Survivor's Guide of sorts for people new to the area. these can be specific to Portland or the South in general. I'll start off with a few.
1.) If someone raises two fingers as they pass by in a car, this is common. They are waving, feel free to do likewise.
2.) The old Kerley building could be one of two places. I have heard it cited as what was the old Farmer's Bank building, where traffic court is and where Liberty Freewill meets now; and where the center where Subway is now. I have heard the old grocery store was in both places, but that was before my time.
3.) Oh yeah, we sometimes give directions using landmarks that don't exist anymore.
This should get us started. I'm sure there are a lot more out there. I got a lot more where that came from.
