May 2010 Floods

Well, it has been 2-1/2 months since the devastating floods hit Middle Tennessee. Please look back on the events of that weekend and the events that followed, and let us know how you fared. Were there problems, unresolved issues, things that were handled well, things that were handled poorly, etc.?

Library

Does anyone know the status of the library expansion? They moved to 321 Victor Reiter Parkway several months ago so that their old building on Portland Boulevard could be expanded. Supposedly, they had one year to finish the project and move back to the expanded building on Portland Blvd. As far as I can tell, nothing is happening with the old building.

Bugs

Does anybody know the scientific name of the bugs that invade Richland Park every evening at dusk? I've heard them called gnats and non-biting midges. There are huge clouds of them each evening. (I've heard these described as a ghost of gnats.) Whatever they are, they are very annoying!

Strawberry Festival Carnival has a New Home!

The 2010 Strawberry Festival carnival has a new home: the front lot of Portland High School, 600 College Street! Here is the press release they sent out 5/5/2010:

The carnival will be held in Portland High School's front lot this year. "Mr. Bob Gideon graciously stepped in to help the band with this fundraising effort. It's very difficult to find a location in town that is large enough to handle the carnival with parking availability within a two-week period," said Steve Faught, President of the Portland Band Boosters. "This effort supports the band programs in Portland and has kept us from having to have any additional fund raisers for the last three years."

"We hope that everyone takes the opportunity to come out to the carnival and enjoy! It opens Tuesday night and is open during evening hours again Wednesday, Thursday and Friday; and all day Saturday. Discount coupons for Tuesday through Thursday night are available at the Chamber of Commerce, local newspapers, and will be distributed through the PHS band students. Arm bands are $20.00, and individual tickets will also be on hand.

Strawberry Festival Carnival, May 11-15, 2010

There are rumors floating around that the 2010 Strawberry Festival Carnival has been canceled. Here is the current, correct status of the carnival:

"Due to massive construction on TN109 in front of Portland East Middle School, this event may have to be moved to a new location. The Portland Band Boosters [the organizers of the carnival] are actively working with the City and private landowners to possibly find another location. The organizers definitely want to have the carnival in 2010, and they'll do everything possible to make it happen. The carnival is a very important part of the Portland bands; among other things, it gives the bands the funds to travel to away games."

Thank You Portland Blog as I say good-bye

Let me start by saying I have enjoyed being a part of this blog for close to five years now if not more. I've had the opportunity to get to know people that I still don't know... lol and I've enjoyed the opportunity to share thoughts, ideas, feelings, and yes vent frustrations with others within this community about things that are important to us knowing that atleast someone heard what we had to say.

Charlie has been awesome and let's not forget this blog is self supporting and not funded by any part of this city, he does this out of the goodness of his heart and is a fantastic person that I will surely miss. Thanks Charlie for all you do!

I have been busy over the past months and not posting too often, as of late my time has been spent getting prepared to return to a place that I dearly love - Florida! My 14 years spent in Portland has been enjoyable to the point that we've had the opportunity to live around family, watch my grandchildren grow, and experience small town living without all the hassles and conveniences of larger cities.

Before I leave the blog I wanted to share some experiences I personally have had with Portland within the past two years which include attempting to open a business here and getting involved with the City.

Helping Our Community Grow

[This was posted by spence on another thread. I am moving it here because it might make an interesting topic for all of us. Charlie]

I am new to this blog, but not the community. I have an interest in helping this city grow, yet have kept quiet. I would like to know where we are heading as a community. All I see is crime on the rise and a complacent attitude. I am willing to help this city grow in a way of decency. I do not have the time this moment to discuss my thoughts. Please let me know where we're heading as I will be getting more involved. Thank you.

According to this list, Tennessee is near the bottom of the list of the most healthy U.S. states. Actually, we are #44 on the list. Pretty bad!

What can we do about this?

Paradoxical Commandments

A friend of mine in Florida sent me a list of the "Paradoxical Commandments" a few days ago. The list was written for student council leaders back in 1968. Personally, I think it's a neat list; I wish someone had shown it to me in 1968! Hopefully, the list will be useful to you and to current student council members at Portland High School and elsewhere.

This link will give you the list and its history. Be sure to read the "Origin" section. Enjoy!

Has anyone noticed that the litter problem in and around Portland seems to be getting worse? For years, we've had to deal with the beer cans and fast-food wrappers. Now it seems to be mattresses and box springs. I've seen four dumped beside roads in the last month.

As requested I'm starting this thread to get some feedback from our bloggers on this matter.

D writes;
I am not sure if this is where I need to ask a question of Portland but it seems a good enough place to start. I have a deep concern for the hungry in Portland and my question would be "Would a kitchen that served a free meal to those of need be welcome here in Portland?" Would local churches and businesses be of help?

thank you - D.

This blogger cared enough to ask and obviously cares about our community and individuals in Portland that may be experiencing difficult times. Although many of us are blessed with hot meals every day, I'm sure there are some that aren't as fortunate. What are your thoughts?

I know the blog is slow right now, but this is a topic that is truly hitting home with many.

What are your thoughts on the economy, what if any changes have you made, and are all these bail outs the answer?

I for one am absolutely stunned by an article that I just read regarding the newest bail out funds for the Auto Industry.

Whether it's in Portland or elsewhere, where do you do business? What attracts you? Price? Convenience? Selection? Service? Atmosphere? Liquor By The Drink? Smoking Sections? Other . . .?

On the flip side, why do you NOT do business somewhere? Give us the low-down on your experiences.

If you prefer, you can rate businesses 1-5

MY Space - Good, Bad or Ugly?

After seeing the report on TV last evening about the 12 Y.O. Sumner County girl that met her rapist on MY Space, I thought this would be a good time to bring up this topic on the blog.

What are your experiences with MY Space?
Should there be better security measures that not allow under age members?
What do you do in monitoring under age computer users in your household?

The stories that come out about My Space are horrific, yet some good has come as well, what, and who should be responsible for policing this site if any? Lets hear your thoughts, experiences and suggestions.

Will Extra Tax Rebate Help?

With all the hoopla surrounding the "stimulus package" that was recently signed off on by the Congress, the Senate and the President, I am curious to know what everyday folks are actually planning to do with the additional money. And if people decide to pay bills or save it for a rainy day, rather than going on a spending spree (which is what the politicians are hoping for), what good is it going to do?

Does anyone really believe this will thwart a recession?

Adult Bullies in the Workplace

badboss.jpg

From the Canada Safety Council:
***************************************************
Profile of a Bully

Adult bullies, like their schoolyard counterparts, tend to be insecure people with poor or non-existent social skills and little empathy. They turn this insecurity outwards, finding satisfaction in their ability to attack and diminish the capable people around them.

A workplace bully subjects the target to unjustified criticism and trivial fault-finding. In addition, he or she humiliates the target, especially in front of others, and ignores, overrules, isolates and excludes the target.

If the bully is the target's superior, he or she may: set the target up for failure by setting unrealistic goals or deadlines, or denying necessary information and resources; either overload the target with work or take all work away (sometimes replacing proper work with demeaning jobs); or increase responsibility while removing authority.

Regardless of specific tactics, the intimidation is driven by the bully's need to control others.
***************************************************
Does anybody have any good stories about adult bullies at work? I would like to hear them, and I would like to hear how you dealt with the situation. Personally, I think adult bullying at work, is a huge problem that is seldom discussed.

In telling your story, please do not use peoples' names or company names. Use a generic name such as Mr. X or Ms. Y. Thanks.

He immediately took an interest in our town and was always there to contribute.
Daniel participated in this blog and always brought some intersting ideas and always he brought his conviction.

This thread would be a good way of saying thanks and good luck to all that he does.

Thank you Daniel and may God bless you,
