Democratic Primary

I haven't seen any discussion about the ongoing Presidential Primary within the Democratic Party. I don't want to start a war here, but I'm curious to know what others in our town think of this fiasco.

First, is there anyone out there who thinks it would be fair bar the delegates from Michigan and Florida from the National Convention? Personally, I think the DNC should be flogged for allowing such a flawed primary process to exist in the first place. How in the world do you disenfranchise (There's that word again) that many voters, especially in such critical states.

Next, does anyone really think the delegates should be seated from the original elections in those states? I don't see how in the world Senator Clinton can think this is fair, since Senator Obama was not even on the Michigan ballot, and both candidates were forbidden from campaigning.

Third, do any others feel as I do that the "Super Delegate" process is a terrible process to use when selecting a candidate? I believe it opens the door to charges of unfairness, corruption, and favoritism.

Finally, are there any others who think that either way this ends, the Democratic Party will have effectively taken itself out of the Presidential race? I cannot envision a good ending for this (especially considering the lack of cooperation between campaigns), and personally I think it may be sounding the death knell for the party for some time to come. I see the Party becoming so fractured that it will take years to repair the damage.

Thanks Howard Dean! Your leadership of the DNC may do more good for the GOP than they could have done themselves.

2006 Tennessee Senate race

The hard fought Tennessee Senate race is about over. I posted pictures and podcasts for both candidates in earlier posts and I'd like to hear what people think about the race, the candidates and what significance this race has for Portland. Below are podcasts of the speeches both candidates made in Portland.

4 Councilmen Terms End in May of 2007

If what I am seeing on the City web site is correct,
4 of our current councilmens terms will end in May 2007.
With that said...
what would all of you like to see in candidates that may run for these 4 seats.
This could be a real make or break election depending on who fills these "4 out of 7" seats.

U.S. Senate candidates seeking votes in Portland part II

Corker8.jpg
U.S. Senate candidate Bob Corker came to Portland for the second time in the last six months on Sept. 6 to a crowd of about 450 to 500 at Ralph Cook's Bottom View Farms. The organizers for the event did a great job getting the word out about Corker coming and I'm sure he raised quite a bit of money. People came from Portland and all over the county. Like I did with Ford, I've included a podcast of Corker's speech at Bottom View Farms. Feel free to sound off about the speech and the election in general in the comments below. Like you did in the Harold Ford post, who do you support and why? Also included below is a video of the speech that includes a shot of the crowd who attended.

U.S. Senate candidates seeking votes in Portland

HaroldFord1.jpg
I'm glad both U.S. Senate candidates are taking time to stop by Portland. Democrat Harold Ford stopped by Aug. 10 and Bob Corker will be in town for the second time at Bottom View Farms on Sept. 6 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The cost will be $25.

This forum would be a good place for readers to post who they support and why. I will give my response below in the comments section of this post.

For those who didn't make it on short notice to hear Ford in Portland, below is a podcast of the speech that he gave at the pavillion in Meadowbrook Park. In the extended entry, there are additional photos and two YouTube videos of a speech he gave in Bethpage.
