Police, what area's of town need more attention?

As requested by another poster;

What are areas of the town that you think need more police attention?
Whether it be traffic violations, or something else?

Vacationing Close to Home

With the price of gas these days soaring and Summer vacationing knocking at the door, I thought it might be a good topic to start where everyone can post their favorite places to visit that are close by. This might help others in planning a summer vacation that won't cost a fortune to travel to. More and more people are moving here from other states, I'm sure they would appreciate your input on places to visit in TN or KY as well. If your favorite spots have a web site, perhaps you could include that in the posting.

Happy Posting - Judy

Need your help.

"George A Greene Memorial"

Today is the anniversary of my Dad's home going. I know where he is and he is in such a better place right now And I know he is dancing with my Jesus.

Mr Charles Myers told me this would be OK. So, I am asking you for help. I'm not good asking for help. I trust God to take care of everything, but I feel HE is telling me to do this. I hope I'm right. = )

We did not run in the papers in time. So, we still run into people in town saying they did not know he was gone. They tell my Mom (who will be 80 on her next Birthday in Nov) if she needs anything let them know. Well this was the best way to let everyone know what is needed and if they can help. As I stated my mom is going to be 80 this year. She misses my Daddy, but she is a strong woman. Her money was cut way down. My Daddy was Retired Navy. But that doesn't seem to go for much these days. The Navy took over half my Dad's check away from her. And Social Security took one of her checks away. I don't get that. I know there is one less person for food, etc... But she still has the same bills. They just don't go away because he did. THEY need to take better care of our elderly. Because they are the ones that help build this nation. But, that's for another blog. = )

Just to give a little back ground. He became really sick in Oct. 2006, and was in and out of the hospitals and rehab for 6 months. We were told it was bad, but they could get him through. So that's what we believed. But, that wasn't the case. (Another blog about hospital later) On April 25th, 2007 he went home to be with Jesus. It crushed us and especially my mom. They were just 3 months shy of their 54th wedding anniversary. We miss him so much. Two days after he was buried. I had a birthday. That was the hardest day for me. He always called me and wished me A "Happy Birthday, Pumpkin seed" That's what he called me. That day at work my mind kept going to his call. Thinking he will be calling soon. But, it never came. Anyway, what I am in need of is help. Any help anyone can give. There is A LOT of repairs that needs to be done on my mom’s house. I wanted to just get her a nice trailer. But, her memories are in the house and she doesn't want anything else to change and I can understand that. There are bills. She didn't have much insurance and what she got went on the funeral. Which we still owe on. But, they are letting us make payments. I don't have much money myself. But, I help her as much as I can. We are making it but, it is really hard. Especially with the prices of everything going up. (electricity, gas, kerosene, etc...)

Here is what we put in the paper:
"George Greene, a Loving, Caring and Faithful Husband, Father, Grand Father, Great Grand Father, went home to be with Jesus yesterday, 4-25-07. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Jones) Greene, Portland,TN., three children, Donna (Greene) Alexander of Flagstaff, Arizona, Gary Greene of Portland, TN and Pamela Greene of Hendersonville, TN, seven grandchildren (Cliff, Jason, Chryste, William, Jessica, Michael, Sarah, Brittney) and two Great Grandchildren (Christian and Corinne)
He was Retired Navy (21 Years) and was the son of Olive and Frank Greene (deceased) of Providence, RI. He will be missed, but he is his dancing with Jesus now. No more pain. We all love you!

There is a Memorial Fund set up at Volunteer State Bank, 101 Hwy 52 W, Portland, TN. (615-325-9257) “George Greene Memorial Fund”

We received a few donations and for that we were so grateful and thankful. We still have it set up. I'm praying that there is help somewhere out there. So, if anyone wishes to donate. It would be very much appreciated. You can donate to the memorial fund or send to P O Box 348, Hendersonville, TN 37077-0348 What ever is easiest for you.

Also, if you could provide your name when making the donations, so we make thank you and pray for you. If you would rather remain anonymous that is OK too.

If you could pass this along to everyone you know that would be so great. As I stated I am not good at asking for help. I really hate it. But, I have no other choice.

I know God will provide and talk to the right people. I also am in desperate need of some counseling for a lawyer. I need to get my mom's will and place in order and I have questions and do not know where to begin. So, if anyone can help in that area also. OK, now that I have written a book. I thank you all for your time and for Mr Myers help in getting this out to you.

For more information on exactly what is needed, you can go to my space page and communicate directly with me. link is below.

Again, I THANK YOU all so mush for listening at at least. May God Blesse you in so many ways.

MY Space - Good, Bad or Ugly?

After seeing the report on TV last evening about the 12 Y.O. Sumner County girl that met her rapist on MY Space, I thought this would be a good time to bring up this topic on the blog.

What are your experiences with MY Space?
Should there be better security measures that not allow under age members?
What do you do in monitoring under age computer users in your household?

The stories that come out about My Space are horrific, yet some good has come as well, what, and who should be responsible for policing this site if any? Lets hear your thoughts, experiences and suggestions.

Zoning Rules & Regs within City Limits

By request I am starting this thread

Hi all. I was wondering if you could possibly start a thread regarding zoning issues in the city limits. I moved out here from California almost two years ago, and one of my big draws to this area was the land. So I bought a house and 5 acres, with the intention of allowing my children to raise a couple of animals for livestock shows, and for my family to have a handful of chickens for eggs.

We had asked our Realtor to check the zoning, and she claimed she did (my fault completely for not checking myself.) ~ To make a long story short, I have asked our City Council to take into consideration changing the zoning to allow for livestock with limitations (like the zoning for horses that just went into effect) ~ I am just trying to get a feel for what all of you think. Thanks for listening.

Tanya

Perhaps some of you could shed a little light on this situation and what would be expected.

Due To Extreme Fuel Prices, I Am No Longer Able To Provide This Service

There have been a number of occasions where bloggers have made comments about the lack of places to recycle in the Portland area. Volunteer Recycling on Morningside Drive takes metals ( and they pay you for them), but I am not aware of any place locally that takes anything other than metal, and Volunteer's hours aren't convenient for everyone, so . . . Starting February 1st, I will start providing a FREE recycling pick-up service to Portland area residents. Yes, FREE! (My payment comes from selling the items in bulk to recycling companies) It is hard, dirty work, with a payoff that has more to do with wanting to "do my part" than it does with money, but I will make enough that I can do it without charging the people who are simply wanting to keep their junk out of the landfills . . . and still make a small profit. I HOPE at some point in the not too distant future that I will be able to provide a "drop-off" location as well, but for now I can only schedule pick-ups.

For more information about what I am offering to pick up, just click on the “continue reading” link below. If you have something that isn't on the list, feel free to call me and I'll see what I can do.

Neighborhood Crime Watch Groups

Many concerns have been raised about keeping our children safe at home, summer is right around the corner and a good time to start thinking about ways we as citizens could make our home, our neighborhoods a safer place for everyone.

The first thing that came to mind was neighborhood crime watch groups, for those of you that live in subdivisions, this would be a great start. And what a better way to get to know your neighbors.

I have included a little information below, It may be a little lengthy but gives a good idea as to what may be involved. Having lived in the South where Crime was much greater than it is here, I can only confirm that these types of groups do work and definately worth puting one together.

Neighborhood Watch
The Sumner County Sheriff’s Office sponsors a Neighborhood Watch Program.

It has been our experience that caring and concerned neighbors can make a difference in preventing and deterring criminal activity. Neighborhood Watch Program volunteers have successfully reduced criminal activities in their areas and provided assistance to law enforcement to apprehend those criminals who chose to operate in our communities. Members of the Sheriff’s Office will meet with any interested neighbors and assist with an organizational meeting to discuss an overview of the Neighborhood Watch Program. Follow up meetings can be scheduled to formalize a Crime Watch Coordinator, select Block Captains, and provide assistance for posting of signs and distribution of literature.

If you are interested in starting a neighborhood watch program in your area, please contact any of the following:

Sheriff Bob Barker (615) 452-2616 extension 1821
Sergeant David Dodds (615) 452-2616 extension 1676
Deputy Ron Brawner (615) 452-2616 extension 1670

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Good Site with lots of information:
National Crime Prevention Council http://www.ncpc.org/

From: http://www.ncpc.org/Topics/Neighborhood_Watch/index.php

Neighborhood Watch
Neighborhood Watch is one of the oldest and most effective crime prevention programs in the country, bringing citizens together with law enforcement to deter crime and make communities safer.

Sponsored by the National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA), Neighborhood Watch can trace its roots back to the days of colonial settlements, when night watchmen patrolled the streets. The modern version of Neighborhood Watch was developed in response to requests from sheriffs and police chiefs who were looking for a crime prevention program that would involve citizens and address an increasing number of burglaries.

Launched in 1972, Neighborhood Watch counts on citizens to organize themselves and work with law enforcement to keep a trained eye and ear on their communities, while demonstrating their presence at all times of day and night. (The program took off quickly: in just ten years, NSA data showed that 12 percent of the population was involved in a Neighborhood Watch.) Neighborhood Watch works because it reduces opportunities for crime to occur; it doesn’t rely on altering or changing the criminal’s behavior or motivation.

Tips

Work with the police or sheriff’s office. These agencies are critical to a Watch group’s credibility and are the source of necessary information and training.

Link up with your victims’ services office to get your members trained in helping victims of crime.

Hold regular meetings to help residents get to know each other and to decide upon program strategies and activities.

Consider linking with an existing organization, such as a citizens’ association, community development office, tenants’ association, or housing authority. They may be able to provide an existing infrastructure you can use.
Canvass door-to-door to recruit members.

Ask people who seldom leave their homes to be “window watchers,” looking out for children and reporting any unusual activities in the neighborhood.

Translate crime and drug prevention materials into Spanish or other languages needed by non-English speakers in your community. If necessary, have a translator at meetings.

Sponsor a crime and drug prevention fair at a church hall, temple, shopping mall, or community center.

Gather the facts about crime in your neighborhood. Check police reports, conduct victimization surveys, and learn residents’ perceptions about crimes. Often, residents’ opinions are not supported by facts, and accurate information can reduce the fear of crime.

Physical conditions like abandoned cars or overgrown vacant lots contribute to crime. Sponsor cleanups, encourage residents to beautify the area, and ask them to turn on outdoor lights at night.

Work with small businesses to repair rundown storefronts, clean up littered streets, and create jobs for young people.

Start a block parent program to help children cope with emergencies while walking to and from school or playing in the area.

Emphasize that Watch groups are not vigilantes and should not assume the role of the police. Their duty is to ask neighbors to be alert, observant, and caring—and to report suspicious activity or crimes immediately to the police.
