To many, the Holidays represent a time of giving, to family, friends, co-workers, neighbors etc. a festive and joyous time. To others it is a difficult and troubling time, not only unable to give, but in need of a helping hand. Little Girls who will go without that Barbie Doll, a little boy with no toy truck, a baby without warm clothing. A family without a hot meal or a warm bed to sleep in. This happens right here in our own community. These are difficult situations, I'm sure with the economy as it is today there will be a much larger need. Where do they go for help? What can the community do? What steps would one need to take if they were in this situation? And what should they expect to encounter?
BLACK FRIDAY

One of the biggest shopping days of the year has just passed, and once again we're hearing reports of shoppers and employees being injured and in some cases killed from the fury that feeds this frenzy!
Who's to blame? Are you a Black Friday shopper? Is it really worth it?

Vacationing Close to Home

With the price of gas these days soaring and Summer vacationing knocking at the door, I thought it might be a good topic to start where everyone can post their favorite places to visit that are close by. This might help others in planning a summer vacation that won't cost a fortune to travel to. More and more people are moving here from other states, I'm sure they would appreciate your input on places to visit in TN or KY as well. If your favorite spots have a web site, perhaps you could include that in the posting.

Happy Posting - Judy

Today is the first day of the Chinese lunar calendar and this year is the Year of the Rat, the first year in the cycle of 12 animals that make up the Chinese zodiac. Anybody born in 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996 or 2008 was born in the rat year.
"Tension, disaster, and turbulence," is what this AFP article says is in store for us in 2008. Let's hope Portland escapes the worst of it like we did Tuesday evening.

Halloween Fun

Ok, It's almost that time for all the ghosts and gobblins to come out...... or do they?

I don't exactly live in a subdivision, and I don't live in the heart of down town so I hardly ever get to see any tricks or treaters at my house.

Are people still taking the little ones out or is there more group parties and less running the streets on halloween night.

Christmas in Portland

Thanks for getting us started again, gw! Originally from Jersey, this will be our first Christmas down here in Portland! We are looking forward to many new experiences and traditions. We were wondering if there are any town traditions (caroling, lighting town Christmas tree, get togethers, services, etc) that kind of thing? I'm very interested in your own personal traditions or memories too.

We would always go to a tree farm and pick out a tree on Thanksgiving weekend. We would decorate it and play Christmas carols all day! (Are there even any tree farms around here?) I look forward to reading all your Holiday traditions and memories! jc
