Hmmmm posted a comment today, "I am curious to know who these folks are replying to. After all, this thread is a year old." Hmmm was referring to this previous comment, "Interesting, I wonder what the statistics are on your first point there..." posted by "Events Tickets" on the August 2009 "Front Page - Around Town" entry.

Well, Hmmm, I too am curious about these posts. They originate from IP addresses in Chicago, and they are obviously spam. I would imagine a spambot posts the comments because they come in fairly regularly, about 1 a.m. and 1 p.m. The Commenter is different each time and the comment is different too, always something innocuous, like, "Good point you made, I really enjoyed reading it."

I would love to block the comments, but the blog software (unfortunately) doesn't allow blocking an IP address.

I have often wondered what the purpose of these posts is. Normally spammers are trying to sell something. This guy just posts comments. Who knows what he's up to! All I can do is delete the comments.

Let me start by saying I have enjoyed being a part of this blog for close to five years now if not more. I've had the opportunity to get to know people that I still don't know... lol and I've enjoyed the opportunity to share thoughts, ideas, feelings, and yes vent frustrations with others within this community about things that are important to us knowing that atleast someone heard what we had to say.

Charlie has been awesome and let's not forget this blog is self supporting and not funded by any part of this city, he does this out of the goodness of his heart and is a fantastic person that I will surely miss. Thanks Charlie for all you do!

I have been busy over the past months and not posting too often, as of late my time has been spent getting prepared to return to a place that I dearly love - Florida! My 14 years spent in Portland has been enjoyable to the point that we've had the opportunity to live around family, watch my grandchildren grow, and experience small town living without all the hassles and conveniences of larger cities.

Before I leave the blog I wanted to share some experiences I personally have had with Portland within the past two years which include attempting to open a business here and getting involved with the City.

To clear up some confusion:

Anyone with an interest in Portland, Tennessee, may become a blog author. An author has the capability to create new entries (as well as comments.)

If you want to be a blog author, all you have to do is e-mail Judy or Charlie. Just tell us you want to be a blog author. All we need is your name and an e-mail address. (If you have a specific way you want your name displayed on the blog, please let us know that too.) We will set you up and e-mail you your username and password.

We look forward to having lots of new authors!

Reminder: Anyone may leave comments on the blog. You do not need a username and password just to leave comments.

The blog administrators would like to remind everybody of a blog rule: closing posts to comments is frowned upon since this is a blog and not a bulletin board, and authors are asked not to do so. The purpose of the blog is to facilitate communications by having open discussions. This cannot be done if people cannot comment.

We realize that some of you were probably not aware of this rule, so we won't change the flag on existing posts. However, starting today (1/10/2009), if an administrator finds an "allow comments" flag turned off, we will turn it on. Thank you very much for your cooperation!

On a different subject, we might be upgrading the Movable Type platform of the blog. So, if you see changes in the weeks/months ahead, don't be alarmed.

I would like to welcome Judy as a new Blog Administrator. Over the years, Judy's keen eyes have alerted me to questionable postings on the Portland blog.

I really respect Judy's judgment, and I think it's time for her to have Administrator privileges. These privileges will allow Judy to edit all entries and comments. In addition, she will be able to delete entries and/or comments which do not meet blog standards.

I have asked Judy to write a little about herself, and this is reproduced below. I would personally like to thank Judy for her help in keeping this blog a place where we can all work for a better Portland.

Today is the anniversary of my Dad's home going. I know where he is and he is in such a better place right now And I know he is dancing with my Jesus.

After seeing the report on TV last evening about the 12 Y.O. Sumner County girl that met her rapist on MY Space, I thought this would be a good time to bring up this topic on the blog.

What are your experiences with MY Space?
Should there be better security measures that not allow under age members?
What do you do in monitoring under age computer users in your household?

The stories that come out about My Space are horrific, yet some good has come as well, what, and who should be responsible for policing this site if any? Lets hear your thoughts, experiences and suggestions.
