Could 2012 be the end of the Internet as we know it??

I found this on another site and found it to be quite interesting.

Bell Canada and TELUS (formerly owned by Verizon) employees officially confirm that by 2012 ISP's all over the globe will reduce Internet access to a TV-like subscription model, only offering access to a small standard amount of commercial sites and require extra fees for every other site you visit. These 'other' sites would then lose all their exposure and eventually shut down, resulting in what could be seen as the end of the Internet.

Need your help.

"George A Greene Memorial"

Today is the anniversary of my Dad's home going. I know where he is and he is in such a better place right now And I know he is dancing with my Jesus.

Mr Charles Myers told me this would be OK. So, I am asking you for help. I'm not good asking for help. I trust God to take care of everything, but I feel HE is telling me to do this. I hope I'm right. = )

We did not run in the papers in time. So, we still run into people in town saying they did not know he was gone. They tell my Mom (who will be 80 on her next Birthday in Nov) if she needs anything let them know. Well this was the best way to let everyone know what is needed and if they can help. As I stated my mom is going to be 80 this year. She misses my Daddy, but she is a strong woman. Her money was cut way down. My Daddy was Retired Navy. But that doesn't seem to go for much these days. The Navy took over half my Dad's check away from her. And Social Security took one of her checks away. I don't get that. I know there is one less person for food, etc... But she still has the same bills. They just don't go away because he did. THEY need to take better care of our elderly. Because they are the ones that help build this nation. But, that's for another blog. = )

Just to give a little back ground. He became really sick in Oct. 2006, and was in and out of the hospitals and rehab for 6 months. We were told it was bad, but they could get him through. So that's what we believed. But, that wasn't the case. (Another blog about hospital later) On April 25th, 2007 he went home to be with Jesus. It crushed us and especially my mom. They were just 3 months shy of their 54th wedding anniversary. We miss him so much. Two days after he was buried. I had a birthday. That was the hardest day for me. He always called me and wished me A "Happy Birthday, Pumpkin seed" That's what he called me. That day at work my mind kept going to his call. Thinking he will be calling soon. But, it never came. Anyway, what I am in need of is help. Any help anyone can give. There is A LOT of repairs that needs to be done on my mom’s house. I wanted to just get her a nice trailer. But, her memories are in the house and she doesn't want anything else to change and I can understand that. There are bills. She didn't have much insurance and what she got went on the funeral. Which we still owe on. But, they are letting us make payments. I don't have much money myself. But, I help her as much as I can. We are making it but, it is really hard. Especially with the prices of everything going up. (electricity, gas, kerosene, etc...)

Here is what we put in the paper:
"George Greene, a Loving, Caring and Faithful Husband, Father, Grand Father, Great Grand Father, went home to be with Jesus yesterday, 4-25-07. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Jones) Greene, Portland,TN., three children, Donna (Greene) Alexander of Flagstaff, Arizona, Gary Greene of Portland, TN and Pamela Greene of Hendersonville, TN, seven grandchildren (Cliff, Jason, Chryste, William, Jessica, Michael, Sarah, Brittney) and two Great Grandchildren (Christian and Corinne)
He was Retired Navy (21 Years) and was the son of Olive and Frank Greene (deceased) of Providence, RI. He will be missed, but he is his dancing with Jesus now. No more pain. We all love you!

There is a Memorial Fund set up at Volunteer State Bank, 101 Hwy 52 W, Portland, TN. (615-325-9257) “George Greene Memorial Fund”

We received a few donations and for that we were so grateful and thankful. We still have it set up. I'm praying that there is help somewhere out there. So, if anyone wishes to donate. It would be very much appreciated. You can donate to the memorial fund or send to P O Box 348, Hendersonville, TN 37077-0348 What ever is easiest for you.

Also, if you could provide your name when making the donations, so we make thank you and pray for you. If you would rather remain anonymous that is OK too.

If you could pass this along to everyone you know that would be so great. As I stated I am not good at asking for help. I really hate it. But, I have no other choice.

I know God will provide and talk to the right people. I also am in desperate need of some counseling for a lawyer. I need to get my mom's will and place in order and I have questions and do not know where to begin. So, if anyone can help in that area also. OK, now that I have written a book. I thank you all for your time and for Mr Myers help in getting this out to you.

For more information on exactly what is needed, you can go to my space page and communicate directly with me. link is below.

Again, I THANK YOU all so mush for listening at at least. May God Blesse you in so many ways.

MY Space - Good, Bad or Ugly?

After seeing the report on TV last evening about the 12 Y.O. Sumner County girl that met her rapist on MY Space, I thought this would be a good time to bring up this topic on the blog.

What are your experiences with MY Space?
Should there be better security measures that not allow under age members?
What do you do in monitoring under age computer users in your household?

The stories that come out about My Space are horrific, yet some good has come as well, what, and who should be responsible for policing this site if any? Lets hear your thoughts, experiences and suggestions.

You Are Invited!

untitled.JPG

Brian Ruckle, who first suggested that Portland needs a blog, has now suggested we have a lunch so that blog participants may meet each other in person. The lunch is Dutch treat and is open to anyone who wants to attend. Brian suggested a good meeting place would be the El Moro Mexican Restaurant on the north end of Portland. The date is Monday, March 3, 2008, at 11:30 a.m.

Again, this lunch is open to anyone, whether or not you actually participate on the blog. This will be a good time to meet each other, share ideas on the blog, share ideas on Portland, etc.

Hope to see lots of people there!

Local bloggers out there?

Are there any Portland area bloggers out there with blogs on public sites like Blogger or individual URLs? One of the best Tennessee blogs out there is Volunteer Voters, which is on News 2 WKRN's website.

Blog

Hello to all of the Portland blog users.

I have been attending a seminar in Longmont, Colorado, for the last week. My goal was to learn about new housing options for seniors and to figure out if we can get some of those options implemented locally. There is a very real need for programs like I saw in Colorado.

It was my hope that the Portland blog would be used to make Portland a better community. When Brian Ruckle suggested that we start the blog a few years ago, I expressed my concerns that Internet discussion boards tending to get negative fast. I had participated in three boards up to that point, and (unfortunately) people spent more time flaming each other than anything else.

Anyway, Brian told me it was important to have a blog in Portland, and we now have one. He also suggested that I do as little censoring as possible.

When I returned from Colorado and read my e-mail, it appears things got out of hand on the blog. I have e-mails from people who want stuff deleted, and I have e-mails from people demanding their rights to be heard.

Per previous discussions, I know you don't want threads deleted. You want them preserved for historical purposes. I am therefore leaving all of the posts for the last few weeks online. However, I turned off the comment flags on all of them, which prevents people from leaving additional comments.

It is time to start some new threads. Anybody in Portland may start a new thread; all they have to do is send me an e-mail, and I will give them a username and password. Personally, I would like to see more threads started on specific subjects. That will help everyone stay focused on that one topic.

Portland has good things, and Portland has bad things, so we'll have a mix of positive and negative on the blog. However, the purpose of the blog is to make Portland a better place by discussing real issues and suggesting real solutions. Please take your time in creating a thread or a comment. It takes a lot of skill and practice to communicate effectively in any group situation. It is especially difficult on the Internet.

Anyway, let's go forward from here and have some good discussions. Thank you.

Blog Direction

Thanks to everyone who commented on my last post about blog direction. It appears that blog software lets authors have total control over their entries. Authors can add entries, delete their entries, and delete the comments attached to their entries.

Movable Type, the software we use, does not allow us to change this. We are therefore asking blog authors NOT to delete their entries nor the comments associated with their entries.

These are historical records on the day-to-day thoughts of Portland, and we would like to preserve them as a permanent record.

I have updated the blog-posting procedure here: http://www.portlandtn.com/blog.htm

Thanks for your cooperation.

Blog Direction

I would like to ask for everyone's opinion. As you might know, NMT Web Designs, LLC provides this blog as a community service, and I am the administrator of the blog.

The software which runs this blog is Movable Type. This was recommended to us years ago by Brian Ruckle. The big problem I have with the software is (as you've found out), an author has the ability to delete his or her entry. Deleting an entry, in my opinion, should be an administrative function, but Movable Type does not allow this option.

I have been looking at other blog software over the last few days, and it all seems to work the same: if you can create an entry, you can delete your entry.

This leaves me two choices:

1. Leave the blog exactly as it is today. A person who writes an entry has total control over it, including the ability to delete it (and all the comments associated with it).

2. I can take away everyone's ability to create entries. People who want to have a new entry would e-mail it to me, and I would post it. That means that the person who submitted the entry to me can't delete it.

Please note that both of the choices above do not affect comments. Anybody can post a comment anytime.

Comments? Suggestions? Other approaches? Thoughts?

Thanks!
Charlie

BLOG TOPICS Being Deleted - Is this Fair

I don't know if anyone has realized this but many topics of discussion have recently been deleted from this Blog, I know as a Blog Author (one that can start new topics) that you can go and delete topics that you (as the author) have started, Have I ever done so.... NO, but it appears that atleast ONE Author has. I myself find this disturbing, look around for yourself and see who's topics are missing. I've gone and sorted the topics and one particular name/author is no longer showing which either means He/She or Administration deleted the many many topics they had authored on this site. I stumbled upon this because there was a topic this person started that I wanted to revisit for review of a post and it is no longer there, so then I looked for others, and poof they are gone. With that I ask why do we bother posting on this blog!

New Portland "Radio Blog"

I just wanted to let everyone know about the newest project I have undertaken for the radio station here in Portland. Lee, the manager of the station, wanted more local broadcasting and has asked me to host a political talkshow. It began this week, and we are talking about many of the topics you discuss here on this blog. So I wanted to invite everyone to tune in tp 1270AM on weekdays from 4-6PM and express your opinions. I have envisioned this to be a type of "radio blog" to give people a chance to express their opinions and get discussions started regarding major issues. Hope to talk to you soon.

Spam

For those of you who have asked the question ...

The Portland blog receives over 100 spam comments posted per day. These are posted by automaticic spambots.

I go into the blog several times per day and delete the obvious junk messages. However, there will be times when you'll see a spam message before I can delete it. Sorry about that.

This is a national and international problem. Until spam is addressed as a serious problem by governments of the world, we are all going to see more and more and more of it.

Video blog Portland

If you haven't checked out www.youtube.com, you ought to. YouTube allows you to upload video free of charge and share it with family, friends or post it on your website. I've been playing with the video function on my Canon Powershot A80. After recording, I downloaded the file onto my computer and uploaded it onto YouTube. Above is a video I shot during the Elmer Hinton Memorial Library's art show and anniversary celebration on Sunday, Aug. 20. The dancers are with Blanca Jaeger's Hispanoamerica dance troupe.

Here's another one of Rep. Mike McDonald during his campaign kick off.

How the Blog Works

At the request of several people, we have decide to post ALL comments to the blog as soon as the writer clikck "POST." There will no longer be a delay until somebody approves the comment.

The advantage of this: comments appear faster, and people can see changes to the blog in real time throughout the day.

The disadvantage of this: some "spam" comments will hit the blog and stay there for a little while. If you see spam, please ignore it.

The webmasters will still log on a couple of times a day and read ALL new comments. If we find any spam or any offensive comments, we'll delete them at that time.

We shall see how this new system works. Thanks!

PORTLAND BLOG SEEMS TO BE IN A BOG

I notice that it has been some time since the last entry was posted on the Portland Blog....I enjoy reading everyone's comments on different topics and hope to see a little more blog traffic.

The holidays are upon us and I am looking forward to the sights, sounds and smells all around.

How did last night's storm affect everyone? Any serious damage around Portland? I am on the North side, near Kirby Rd and everything looked fine this morn...

Check out the Rocky Toppers

For those of you new to blogging, you ought to go check out the Rocky Top Brigade website, rtblogo.jpga group of Tennessee bloggers with an aggragator on their home page. The RTB was started by a liberal Knoxville blogger named South Knox Bubba who had the group's home page on his site. Just recently he shut down for good and other bloggers took up where Bubba left off. In this group there are conservatives, liberals, moms, sports fans and many many others. I used to have a blog on their list but I stopped posting last October and dropped off their list.
One of the traditions of the Brigade is to hold occasional Volunteer Tailgate Parties where the bloggers send one member their best posts of the last week or two to be listed on that person's site. This is a way to generate traffic for one member and an easy way to check out what everybody else has been writing about. The most recent Volunteer Tailgate Party was at Big Orange Michael.

New to Blog

Hello everyone....I am new to the world of "blog" (as well as relatively new to Portland) and hope to meet lots of "bloggers" from here, there and everywhere. I think this will be a great opportunity for the community to voice it's opinions, share information, and generally just get to know what Portland is about. I do know that Fall Soccer begins soon, as I have two grandsons who will be playing and I'm pretty excited about it. I found out today that the season actually begins on Sep 12 (Jamboree Sep 10, pics, etc.) and ends on October 29th. Practices should begin sometime this week or weekend.
If anyone has more info to share, please do so..til next time, bye gw

Blog Authors Needed!

Welcome to the Portland blog! Anybody can comment on any article on the blog.

If you'd like to write articles for the blog, we need authors!! Have an opinion? Want to vent? Have a great suggestion you'd like to discuss with others? This is the forum!

If you'd like to know more, please see our blog page on the Portland web site: http://www.portlandtn.com/blog.htm.

We are just learning to use the blog software ourselves. Hopefully, one day soon, we'll figure out how to add those instructions directly into the blog. (Any bloggers in Portland who know how to use Movable Type? We can use your help. Thanks!)
