[This message was sent to teachers and principals this morning, 02/17/2010. It came from the Sumner County Board of Education Central Office. (Emphasis was added by me.) Charlie]

The Board of Education approved several items last night related to this year's school you may share with your teachers, staff, students, parents, and other interested individuals. First, as you know, we have now used 10 stockpiled days for snow. As a result, we asked the Board to make March 11 and 12 actual student days instead of the parent conference and professional development days that had originally been planned. The Board approved this adjustment to the calendar. Accordingly, everyone needs to plan for students to be in school on these two days. If families have made plans to be away with their children for what they expected to be an extended weekend, we will excuse these absences.

Secondly, with so much time left in February and the entire month of March yet to come, there is continued concern that we could miss more than the 13 stockpiled days which we have. As a result, the Board has agreed that we will make adjustments to the second week of spring break if we should need more than 13 snow days. The adjustments would start on the last day of the break, April 16th, and work backwards. The list below shows how this would work:

April 16---Snow day 14

          April 15---Snow day 15

          April 14---Snow day 16

          April 13---Snow day 17

          April 12---Snow day 18

Certainly everyone hopes that we do not have to make use of this plan; however, everyone agreed that this plan is better than adding hours to student days, going on Saturdays, or adding to the end of the school year. We realize that there may be students whose families have planned trips during these days which cannot be changed. Again, as with March 11 and 12, we will excuse such absences. If you have teachers or staff with trips with dates which cannot be cancelled or rescheduled, please let us know so that we can discuss what may be done about this change in the second week of spring break.

Finally, the Board agreed that we may ask the Tennessee Department of Education if we may move our TCAP test dates to April 20 through 23. We will make this phone call to the state today and will let you know immediately if we get approval for the change. While there are indeed several concerns related to this request, we believe that it is in the best interest of our students and teachers to have more instruction time available to us before testing. Even if we miss no more days for inclement weather, the 10 days we have missed since winter break are a source of concern to everyone responsible for having students ready for spring testing. If approval is granted, we will send you more detailed information related to this proposed test date change.

I am new to this blog, but not the community. I have an interest in helping this city grow, yet have kept quiet. I would like to know where we are heading as a community. All I see is crime on the rise and a complacent attitude. I am willing to help this city grow in a way of decency. I do not have the time this moment to discuss my thoughts. Please let me know where we're heading as I will be getting more involved. Thank you.

Tennessee Congressman Bart Gordon, who represents our district, just announced he will not seek reelection in 2010. Click here to read an article. This is a big surprise to me. What does everyone think about this?

Every time I hear something about "Cap and Trade" on the news, I think of one of Time Magazine's 2002 Inventions of the Year: the Solar Tower.

For about US$1 billion, you get a tower that produces enough electricity to run about 200,000 homes. That's a huge amount of solar power.

Here is a link.

The U.S. government spends billions of dollars every few minutes on all kind of junk. Yet, for seven years, a solar tower has not been built -- due to lack of funds.

There was a smaller prototype solar tower which ran in Spain for about 10 years. (They used it mostly to test different kinds of glass, coatings for the glass, etc.) It actually worked very nicely.

If the U.S. government is serious about reducing carbon emissions, then fund a solar tower. See how well it works, study ways to make it work better, learn, learn, learn. Whatever power it actually produces is a real contribution to reducing carbon emissions. Cap and trade is shoebox accounting: moving money from one shoebox to another. It's taxing TVA/CEMC (and you and me) for having a power plant that uses coal, and giving that money to some politician to spend.

Bart Gordon is Chairman of the House Committee on Science and Technology. Shouldn't Bart be supporting something like this rather than voting for Cap and Trade (which he did)?

By the way, this article was just published, and it may give you an idea of what's in store for the USA if we go with cap and trade.
