Snow Days

I would like to open up a discussion of our recent snow days in Sumner County. How well were the roads cleared? Were schools closed the proper number of days? What was handled properly? What was handled improperly? Are there opportunities to do things better the next time this happens?

Watch the next Special Call Meeting of the City Council on the 18th and that'll give you little view of where we are headed. Prepare to pay bigger fees and taxes and get less for it. Sorry to be so cynical, but I don't see a lot of progress for Portland in the near future.
I think it's really great of you to be interested in Portland's growth --- applaud you for that. ...but think you may be in the wrong town for that....unless you have both "connections" or some terrific ideas and plenty of cash to put into them. First, you'll have to get their attention.
Just curious....how would you like to see Portland grow ? Do you have some unique ideas ? From all I've seen since I've lived here, they aren't too receptive to new ideas...LOL. The sign says "Progressive", but it's just a sign. LOL.

I got up this morning, and said, hey ther is snow. i have 5 kids, we all got out of the trailer and played in the snow. Portland is the best place for snow. Really so down strawberry street I then went to Freds and bought a new close baskit bacause i needed it and Marla was at work.

I am new to this blog, but not the community. I have an interest in helping this city grow, yet have kept quiet. I would like to know where we are heading as a community. All I see is crime on the rise and a complacent attitude. I am willing to help this city grow in a way of decency. I do not have the time this moment to discuss my thoughts. Please let me know where we're heading as I will be getting more involved. Thank you.

The Sumner County School System has 13 built in snow days. Why not use them when there is any question as to the road conditions? They save money by not opening schools on those days by cutting down on bus fuel, lunches, heat, and electricity. It's not like the students are losing any required instructional time since the days are built into the calendar.

So much for budgeting, don't recall having much snow this year so it can't be like they have used up their alloted funds for salting and sanding. Well it sounds like from this information and what has been in the papers this past week about the city that a nice tax increase is on the way from both city and county. Double whammy.... ouch!

The Sumner County Highway department is telling callers they "don't have enough money" to salt/sand all the roads. They are apparently salting/sanding only the hills and the curves.

I would like to say what a great job the city did on getting and keeping the city roads clear, I found no problems getting around on the city roads. Now the county roads were the pits, and I'm not talking about the far out roads either, fountain head road over the tracks were aweful, butler bridge rd the same. I can only imagine how bad it was when you got deeper into the back roads. I don't know, but I still think they could impliment some kind of a snow route alternative for days when it is like today, where city & main roads are good but the back roads aren't.

I'm sure most working parents that live on those roads more than likely went to work, so why can't they set up a drop off location for those rare days like today. Don't know but you would think some other option would be available rather than keep them out of school again. In Florida where my kids went to school they had bus stops where they caught the bus every day, most often it was a few blocks they had to walk, if it was raining they still walked or were taken to the bus stop by parents and you waited in the car for the bus to arrive so they didn't get wet. And to this day they still do this there. I know it's on account of bus safety and I agree some of those back roads I wouldn't want to drive a bus on or have my kids on a bus in that area.

The backroads were still bad this morning and a two hour delay wouldn't have been long enough for the roads to clear. I wouldn't have wanted to be resposible for a the safety of a bus full of kids this morning.

I don't mind having my kiddies home, I work from home anyway so it is ok. I do know that Thursday, the roads outside city limits were horrible! I slid into a ditch because the snow had packed down into ice. So I can understand Thurs. and Fri the schools being closed, the roads were rough. As for today, why doesn't Sumner start late, like I notice some of the other counties do? I don't think the kids should have had the whole day off today
