Bush Sr, Reagan, and Carter. Probably even more but that is all I can remember. Folks with partisan political views are definitely not the sharpest tools in the shed as it is obvious that no one group is ANY better than the next.
the Chain's (whether restaurant or retail store) willingness to open in the area. If the chain doesnt feel like Portland can support the operations of said estabishment, they won't come here. Heck, Taco Bell backed out...what does that tell you? I suppose it doesnt take as much money out of pocket to open a package store as it does retail or restaurants
I am a little appalled that Democrats are more mad at Mass candidate Coakley b/c she took a vacation that may have cost her election last night, than they were when Michael Leiter, the director of the National Counterterrorism Center, took off for his vacation after the underwear bomber attacked. I can clearly see their priorities now.
Unfortunately he seems quicker to move when helping Non-Americans. He is slow to answer for major security snafus, i.e. the underwear bomber, WH party crashers.
I am really pleased with Obama for the way he is handling the Haiti earthquake.
I would say by then it's too late, perhaps the screenings should take place upon entering inside the airport, yes that would mean seriously long lines and not many would hang around with passengers waiting to depart. There is obviously a problem, I just hate to see all this publicity about our own lacking of adequate security in our airports. The media is only telling those that wish to do us harm how unprepared some of the areas may be.
Even in light of the December 25 terrorist threat, the security cameras were not even on, when the Newark airport had to be shut down the other day when the guy went through the wrong gate, or whatever. They still haven't located him - and look what a mess he caused. Why have cameras if they aren't turned on ?? I don't think we are very serious about airport security, really. Think it's all just a show to make us THINK we are safe. Only professionally trained people should be security instead of what they have, but then , that would cost money, wouldn't it ?
seems like the airlines would be the best people to protect their own property, instead of relying on the government.
So if a "body checker" finds a bomb on someone in the airport...what do you think happens next???
stop! you're frightening me:p
I never pick a female name when I troll your blog.
Forget the "dog and pony show" of searching every passenger, though I am not against it. I believe the failure was with the intelligence community and common sense by the Amsterdam Airport checkers. The CIA had good information, but did not act on it. The airport should have checked a suspicious passenger who paid cash for a one way ticket to Detroit, with no coat, no luggage. Napolitano says she will investigate to determine what the failures were...Hello! we already have that information in the "9/11 Commission Report". Why not continue to implement those recommendations than start from scratch?
Hey lol, Maybe I am Judy or Judy is me. Maybe me and Judy are you. Maybe we are not Judy and Debra but Bubba and Larry Joe. Maybe we are a figment of your imagination or MAYBE we are all on an episode of LOST and this will all be over with very soon.
Hmmmmm.......Maybe..........
If the US would stop worrying about hurting someone's feelings or not being politically correct we would be safer in this world.
If profiling will help keep us safe I'm all for it.
The problem I see at most airports is that the searchers do not know what to look for as they are more afraid of PC and anti profiling than anything else. I say poo on that ! If the terminals did a better job at searching EVERYONE then the planes would be safer before they take off.
Just my thoughts...
lol, in looking back on several of your prior posts, it would be very possible if we were to say that you are posting under other names as you have implied that Debra or I are doing, that YOU could be "Gina". Atleast Debra and I have more information we can compare in making those assumptions.
Happy New Year!
lol, Thanks for the compliment
Gina sounds like Judy or DebraP..
Anyone have any thoughts on the recent failed terrorist attack, specifically, the current administration's response to it? You know, it may seem humorous when the President can't keep his own (White) house safe from uninvited guest, but it is no laughing matter when he cannot keep our house (the US) safe from terrorist. The "party crashers" may have very well been a tip off at how lax security has become with this administration.
Chuck, sounds like you understand what's going on
One of the best posts I've read in some time, but I was so dissapointed that the grasshopper wasn't saved by some "Public Option" health plan paid for by the Capitalist Pig Ant. Pig Ant?
Although I think the Bill the Senate is preparing to pass on Christmas Eve is a bunch of....well, you know, I'm still not too worried about a law being passed. Too much infighting between the Left and the Loonie Left. The Bills being tossed about now have as much to do with Health Care as the recent Defense Bill had to do with Defense. Very Little. Come on Nov 2010!!
You said... Mr. Obama is about to join a very elite club, the "one term President club"...... LOVE it!
the bill they will probably pass. it is definitely not the one he promised during his campaign. NO matter what foxnews idiot polls said. Most people wanted a public option. This bill is a nice little insurance company bail out. I cannot believe that dems and reps would not pass bill to allow for drug company competition. I guess we see who runs this country. Big Pharma, Insurance companies. Mr. Obama is about to join a very elite club, the "one term President club".
They will be taking a vote Christmas Eve on the health care bill which it looks like will pass (so sad). Some doctors have said that if it passes that they will no longer practice medicine. (so sad). The health care bill IS unconstitutional. Looks like socialism is HERE people thanks to Obama and his goons.
Soooo Sad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Apparently where they were not taught well Debra. *Shivers*
Where did you go to comedian school???
People like you prove that we need change in government and needed a black President to show the whites that they are no more powerful than any other race (and yes, I am white).
Debra P.....I love your posts. I, too, think that black America and President Obama is suffocating the white race. Interracial marriage is the same as gay marriage, it should be banned. Poor people are poor like you say, because they choose to be poor. Go get a job.
Portland, I am proud that people like DebraP exist here in our city.
THE ANT AND THE GRASSHOPPER
This one is a little different... Two Different Versions!
Two Different Morals!
OLD VERSION: The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter.
The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away.
Come winter, the ant is warm and well fed.
The grasshopper has no food or shelter, so he dies out in the cold.
MORAL OF THE STORY: Be responsible for yourself!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
MODERN VERSION:
The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter.
The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away.
Come winter, the shivering grasshopper calls a press conference and demands to know why the ant should be allowed to be warm and well fed while others are cold and starving.
CBS, NBC, PBS, CNN, and ABC show up to provide pictures of the shivering grasshopper next to a video of the ant in his comfortable home with a table filled with food. America is stunned by the sharp contrast.
How can this be, that in a country of such wealth, this poor grasshopper is allowed to suffer so?
Kermit the Frog appears on Oprah with the grasshopper, and everybody cries when they sing, 'It's Not Easy Being Green.'
Jesse Jackson stages a demonstration in front of the ant 's house where the news stations film the group singing, 'We shall overcome.' Jesse then has the group kneel down to pray to God for the grasshopper's sake.
Nancy Pelosi & John Kerry exclaim in an interview with Larry King that the ant has gotten rich off the back of the grasshopper, and both call for an immediate tax hike on the ant to make him pay his fair share.
Finally, the EEOC drafts the Economic Equity & Anti-Grasshopper Act retroactive to the beginning of the summer.
The ant is fined for failing to hire a proportionate number of green bugs and, having nothing left to pay his retroactive taxes, his home is confiscated by the government.
The story ends as we see the grasshopper finishing up the last bits of the ant’s food while the government house he is in, which just happens to be the ant's old house, crumbles around him because he doesn't maintain it.
The ant has disappeared in the snow.
The grasshopper is found dead in a drug related incident and the house, now abandoned, is taken over by a gang of spiders who terrorize the once peaceful neighborhood.
MORAL OF THE STORY: Be VERY careful how you vote in 2010.
So?
duh, aren't we fighting Muslims in Afganistan
Someone please explain to me how Obama can say no to the request for more troops in Afghanistan? The general, who is there doing the fighting, watching it from the ground, has asked for help and our president said NO.
The president isn't the one on the ground in Afghanistan.
I wonder how you explain to the parents of every soldier that has passed away previously in the war that they didn't die in vain.
Sorry "yep". Sometimes it's hard to distinguish a joke from a serious post. If you add a :), or something like that, it would be easier to tell. Maybe the person who wanted me to die was just joking....nahhhh, I'm pretty sure he/she really wanted me to die.
Cheers!
Well if you have waken up just imagine how many others have. They have duped you me and everyone else a million times. Some people still believe the whole right vs left thing. But more and more are figuring it out. This is going to get interesting. I actually welcome the imminent change.
Well, I did write to a Congressman yesterday to express what I felt to him about some issues.....then, this afternoon, I saw the www.opensecrets.org website.....yes, I really do feel like a relic from the 1950's...I really have been so naive. It's all a money game with them. They do give convincing speeches, but then...that's their job.
Write our Congressman? LOL!! In case you hadn't noticed. Senators and congressmen are bought and paid for. On BOTH side of the isle. Surely you are not still in the 1950's mindset that the government is just here to help..
Totally agree with you. I think most of the problems in this country all boils down to greed. From the government right down to the private sector and I am pretty sure that is something that is not easily remedied.
OK....all laughing aside..want to read about what our Congressmen get for their votes ? Just saw a website on CNN.....that bears reading ! www.opensecrets.org both Dems and Republicans, doesen't matter......it's all about the money. Money is the reason for everything. I think I'm officially done with caring about politics....all they are there for is the perks of their jobs. I am suddenly feeling soooooo naive.
Who knows Portland Watcher, Ben Franklin could have said those very words while flying that kite...LOL. "Another joke".
I must admit I have used the "Lighten Up" phrase myself. Just sometimes it fits.
If anyone needs a copy of the constitution I have plenty and I would love to share. Just email me at jkplady@aol.com and I will bring you a copy.
Geesh you folks really missed the point!!!! I was NOT saying *lighten up* about the state of our country. Show me where I said that in my previous post. I was saying "lighten up" to when someone makes a joke about a PHOTOGRAPH!!!!! Two TOTALLY different things. I can not believe I have to actually explain myself.
Debra...you are soooo right about that ! We need to get good and mad about a lot of things. We need to write our Congressmen, get involved, stand up for our Constituition, like you said.
First, people need to read it and know what it says !
Those are two of the most infuriating words these days...."Ligthen Up" . I'm thankful the founding fathers didn't know those words !
Folks need to lighten up???? No, folks need to get mad. They need to get mad at what is being done to this country. Folks need to stand up and support the constitution because the government sure doesn't remember what it says. They twist the constitution every day to fit their needs.
Lighten up......NO WAY!!!! Not when my Freedom is at stake.
Chuck, I am not a part of any administration. I didnt even vote as there was no one I thought could do the job. It was supposed to be a *joke*. How many times have you come in behind someone that has done something that was not up to your *standards* and tried to fix it? Bet you had the same look on your face!! Folks need to lighten up on this blog.
Maybe she doesn't hate the man just what this bunch of Chicago thugs are doing to our country and freedoms
yes it gives us a place to vent our likings or dislikings for our leaders of this fine country the same as others have bashed or praised previous leaders. national politics is local politics it all trickles down stream like it or not, if you dont like it click the bye bye key or move on by expressing your support, that is if now that we're 10 months into the term you can still find anything positive to say.
DebraP....Portland,Tn's #1 President Obama hater. She hates him more than Satan. She hates him more than the Walmart greeter that didn't greet you. She hates him more than the Burger King employee that didn't put cheese on your cheese Whopper. She is DebraP, and she HATES President Obama. So much that she clutters our local blog with this crap month after month.
DebraP, I really wish I had something to offer in response to your post...but I can't stop laughing!! Thank you!!
Why does every discussion about Obama come back to Bush? He's gone...get over it! He (Bush) angered me, but he's not the boss anymore. As for military funerals...did you serve? I was a dependent for 18 years, then did 21 years active duty. I experienced my first brush with a military death in 4th grade. Unless you've served, I'm fairly certain I've had more experience than you have with the consequences of armed conflict, as well as "peacetime" military training "accidents" as well. If you haven't served, don't talk to me about "metal boxes"! I also have three nephews now serving (see their pics on the Portland website). I am confident that most (who am I kidding, all) of the people I served with would prefer serving under President Bush over President Obama. I don't necessarily think President Obama means to be this incompetent, he's just in way over his head.
Shoot, now I've forgotten what the original post was........
if GWB had stepped on rumsfeld & cheney's necks a lot of kids wouldn't have come back mutilated or in a metal box. rumsfeld & his famous line of "we go to war with the Army we have" crap. community donation drives for of all things batteries ? ya'll ever been to a Military funeral due to what's going on over there ? we've been to three of them. you go to one & look in their eyes (the family) & try to figure out where the pain ends & the "why" begins....
If George W. Bush had been the first President to need a teleprompter
installed to be able to get through a press conference, would you have laughed and said this is more proof of how he inept he is on his own and is really controlled by smarter men behind the scenes?
If George W. Bush had spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to take Laura Bush to a play in NYC, would you have approved?
If George W. Bush had reduced your retirement plan's holdings of GM stock by 90%and given the unions a majority stake in GM, would you have approved?
If George W. Bush had made a joke at the expense of the Special
Olympics, would you have approved?
If George W. Bush had given Gordon Brown a set of inexpensive and
incorrectly formatted DVDs, when Gordon Brown had given him a thoughtful and historically significant gift, would you have approved?
If George W. Bush had given the Queen of England an iPod containing videos of his speeches, would you have thought this embarrassingly narcissistic and tacky?
If George W. Bush had bowed to the King of Saudi Arabia, would you have approved?
If George W. Bush had visited Austria and made reference to the
non-existent "Austrian language," would you have brushed it off as a minor slip?
If George W. Bush had filled his cabinet and circle of advisers with
people who cannot seem to keep current in their income taxes, would you have approved?
If George W. Bush had been so Spanish illiterate as to refer to "Cinco de Cuatro" in front of the Mexican ambassador when it was the 5th of May (Cinco de Mayo), and continued to flub it when he tried again, would you have winced in embarrassment?
If George W. Bush had mis-spelled the word "advice" would you have hammered him for it for years like Dan Quayle and potatoe as proof of what a dunce he is?
If George W. Bush had burned 9,000 gallons of jet fuel to go plant a
single tree on Earth Day, would you have concluded he's a hypocrite?
If George W. Bush's administration had okayed Air Force One flying low over millions of people followed by a jet fighter in downtown Manhattan causing widespread panic, would you have wondered whether they actually get what happened on 9-11?
If George W. Bush had failed to send relief aid to flood victims
throughout the Midwest with more people killed or made homeless than in New Orleans, would you want it made into a major ongoing political issue with claims of racism and incompetence?
If George W. Bush had created the position of 32 Czars who report directly to him, bypassing the House and Senate on much of what is happening in America , would you have approved.
If George W. Bush had ordered the firing of the CEO of a major corporation, even though he had no constitutional authority to do so, would you have approved?
If George W. Bush had proposed to double the national debt, which had taken
more than two centuries to accumulate, in one year, would you have
approved?
If George W. Bush had then proposed to double the debt again within 10
years, would you have approved?
So, tell me again, what is it about Obama that makes him so brilliant and
impressive? Can't think of anything? Don't worry. He's done all this in 7
months -- so you'll have three years and five months to come up with an
answer.
You sound as if you are part of the current administration. Maybe you can tell me when they'll begin taking credit for everything. Right now they take credit when the market rises, but blame Bush when it drops. Anything negative is Bush's, positive Obama's. It's a little confusing trying to remember who deserves the credit for what. After all, the Obama/Congress Stimulus Plan was going to hold unemployment at eight percent, and today it hit 10.2%. Is this Obama's fault, Bush's fault, my fault....? Any insight you may have would be appreciated.
I would have this very same look on my face if I had to fix what the last guy screwed up.
Make me a sign "Adios Bart" and I'll put it in my yard. That could be the campaign the opposition runs with, ha, ha, ha.
B, if memory serves we already have a form of term limits. It's called an election. We really have no one to blame but ourselves for this, and past messes. For one thing, we give way too much credit for good and bad things to the President. Congress passes the nonsense bills that we're stuck with, and while their approval rating is at an all time low, we continue to reelect them. See the problem with this picture? If we don't like how President Obama is governing this country (and I DON'T), it does us no good to have like-minded people serving in Congress.
Right now, the approval rating of Congress is hovering around 20% or 25%. Even if it remains this low until the mid-term elections, chances are that 85% to 90% of them will be relected! We need to get a different Congress in place. But we have to start in our own back yard. Don't like the Obama/Pelosi/Reid trio? Then don't vote for anyone supporting their agenda. Adios Bart!!!
Also, watch for an emergence of more third party candidates. The Conservative candidate did well in NY 23rd and I expect to see much more of this in the future. Neither party does a very good job of reprenting us, so let's find someone who will.
Democrats and Republicans? How about making decisions that are best for Americans? That is what is TRULY wrong with our political system! It has to be either the Democrats way or the Republicans way. No one ever just sits down and makes a decision that truly is best for the country as a hold! I heard the same argument for almost 25 years. I think we should set a special limit on these politicans. If your approval rating drops below 50% half through your term, we kick you out of office. No retirement plan and no benefits and no unemployment checks either. Also, we should have to vote on their pay raises. It's our tax dollars that pays their salaries, so we should have the main say if they deserve a raise! Finally, just because you held any elected office for a certain amount of time, we shouldn't have to pay for any kind of security you feel you may need. That should motivate someone to do their job! Let some of those career politicians feel the sweet of job expectations like some of us poor little pee'on tax payers they like to lie to!
The Republicans pick up the governor position in Virginia and New Jersey. I am not sure exactly what that means in the overall picture?
I would guess it will go on for the same amount of time that Bush blamed Clinton, Clinton blamed Bush Sr, etc etc.....which seems to go on forever.
I'm told that it takes time for us to see the effects of the previous administrations deeds, whether good or bad. So using that logic, it would seem that all the prosperity that our country seemed to enjoy during the Reagan years was all due to the policies of Jimmy Carter? Not so sure about that. But it also seemed that everything good that happened during the latter Bush's term was his doing and all the bad that happened was all Clintons fault. I'm not buying that BS either.
Chew on this though: "Under democracy one party always devotes its chief energies to trying to prove that the other is unfit to rule--and both commonly succeed and are right."--H.L. Mencken
Sounds alot like the past 20yrs or so to me.
"Same", I appologize for referring to you incorrectly. The comments I was referring to came from "Smith".
To "Kudos": Thanks much! I was really expecting to get my head taken off for those comments. :)
Smith,
How long are Democrats going to make excuses for Obama by blaming everything on Bush? How long has Obama been president and when does it become HIS presidency?
When Obama is in his third year as president and he has a problem, is it going to be "what was handed him" then too?
Come on!
We need more 3 rd party candidates with less political favors to repay. Democrats and Republicans are jokes. They are pretty sure we are all stupid.
The mess that was handed to him was not made by Bush alone. Let's not forget here that the Democrats were in control of both the house and senate since 2006, so they are just as responsible as anyone else is.
I, for one, can't wait for the 2010 elections.
I vote this part of your statement #1 comment of the year!
"I also think President Obama is doing the best he can, which is truly terrifying. If this is his best, what is the worst going to look like? He's simply too inexperienced to be running the most powerful nation in the world and nearly every decision he makes reinforces that belief. His inexperience with a real job and real working people has clouded his judgement and he's trying to govern using techniques that have never worked anywhere else! In addition, his seemingly endless campaigning is astounding when compared to his predecessors from BOTH parties. He spends more time positioning himself and others for reelection while the truly important matters of the Country are put on the back burner."
VERY well Said!
First of all, don't feel alone about getting a headache when listening to the news. Of course, I'm fairly certain that there will be a provision to treat this affliction in the new healthcare plan.
I'm not even sure Obama or his staff know when the decision will be made. I believe they were using the election as a reason to stall, but that reason is no longer valid. Karzai won by default, and they have their president. My guess is that they (Pres Obama and staff) will now delay the decision for some other Afghan political milestone in order to buy more time with the far Left. When the decision does come down, I'm also guessing that he'll reduce the number of troops sent (if any go at all) in order to somewhat appease the far Left.
Barney Frank is simply a joke! He makes no bones about his desire to spread the wealth. That is, take our wealth and give it to others. He is also a supporter of continued expansion/intrusion of government into our lives. He and others of his political leanings are, or have been, very candid about their desire to enact more socialistic type laws that will "redistribute" wealth. This is not only applicable to banks. Some examples include increased taxes on the "haves" to give to the "have nots", government run healthcare, federal intrusion into business, and on, and on, and on.
Next, I partially agree with "same". It's the same old song and dance in Washington, despite the "Change We Can Believe In" nonsense. I also think President Obama is doing the best he can, which is truly terrifying. He spends more time positioning himself and others for reelection while the truly important matters of the Country are put on the back burner.
And finally, I have a question of my own. Why would ANY rational person be for a healthcare plan that members of Congress refuse to participate in?
I know this did nothing to take care of your headache, and it only made mine worse!
Obama will make a decision on troops in Afghanistan after the upcoming elections. I suspect he will increase troop levels but will not do so right now because it would anger the liberal democratic base.
There is the same old song and dance in Washington. A whole lot of talk and not much doing. It was the same with Bush, Clinton, Bush Sr, Reagan, and Carter. Probably even more but that is all I can remember. Folks with partisan political views are definitely not the sharpest tools in the shed as it is obvious that no one group is ANY better than the next. They are all crooks.
I hate politics, but some just can't keep from hammering and baiting us on these issues here on our local Portland website blog, so I will take the bait and post that I think that President Obama is doing as well as can be expected from the mess that was handed him. I hope he does well.
I have been listening to the news lately and, unfortunately, that usually gives me a headache...politics especially.
But I am curious about a couple of things and I am hoping those more tuned in to politics can advise me...
1. When is Obama going to make a decision about sending more troops to Afghanistan? His general on the ground, running the war, says we need more troops to get the job done! What is he waiting for?
2. Barney Frank of new york, i believe, is proposing a bill that would require banks that are doing well to, basically, subsidize banks that are not doing well.
So, if Bank of America is making money, it will be required to help Sumner County Bank and Trust that might not be doing well. Why?
That's what I get for listening to the news.
