October 2009 Archives
A friend of mine in Florida sent me a list of the "Paradoxical Commandments" a few days ago. The list was written for student council leaders back in 1968. Personally, I think it's a neat list; I wish someone had shown it to me in 1968! Hopefully, the list will be useful to you and to current student council members at Portland High School and elsewhere.
This link will give you the list and its history. Be sure to read the "Origin" section. Enjoy!
Halloween is right around the corner and lucky for us that it falls on a Saturday this year! What does everyone do for this holiday? Visit any haunted houses? What's your neighborhood like on this night? Do your children trick or treat or attend a sponsored event. Share your experiences and favorite places to go.
Have a Safe & Fun Halloween Night!
This comment was posted on another thread by "just saying" on October 21, 2009: I added the photo.
"Speaking of places to eat, Is Portland quickly becoming a town full of concession stands or what? I know of four, three of them are on 109 and the other is on South Russell. What's up with that!"
I think this is an interesting topic and deserves some discussion. What does everyone think of these "concession stands," do they meet zoning and health regulations, has anyone on the blog eaten at one of them, are these stands good or bad for Portland, etc.?

"Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, outdoors and then share your experiences online. Geocaching is enjoyed by people from all age groups, with a strong sense of community and support for the environment." From geocaching.com

If you wake up looking like this PLEASE do not go to work.
Seriously,
is everyone going to get the H1N1 Flu shot?? If not, WHY??
Has anyone noticed that the litter problem in and around Portland seems to be getting worse? For years, we've had to deal with the beer cans and fast-food wrappers. Now it seems to be mattresses and box springs. I've seen four dumped beside roads in the last month.

Happy Fall Ya'll!

In one sense it does not really matter what opinion others may have of you, but in another it can bring insight into our character.
Like it or not, our life produces a trail; and along the way, the encounters, the perceptions, and the knowledge that others have of us through their experiences with us, form their opinion of us.
This trail is what we would call our reputation. Some are good, some are bad, and some are misrepresented; but make no mistake, our interactions with them and others is the basis for their opinion.
I often tell people that I am working on my second reputation. My first one (before being born-again) was not very pleasing. I lived a life of selfishness that produced very little good or worth to society, and in return it did not produce kind thoughts of me as a person. This is not to say that today everyone has an 8x10 color glossy photo of me hanging over their mantle (unless they throw darts); but is to say that there are many who are now pleased with my life and tell others of me in a kind way. This change for me, was directly tied to the free gift of grace from Jesus Christ.

Today's pop culture confuses the meaning of love just as much as in times of old. Love does not seek the best of the one giving the love; it seeks the best of the one receiving the love.
True love for another is realized when our thoughts, speech, and actions are performed in such a way as not to place the one we love in harm, or to bring shame upon them.
There is a question I have asked many times at our jail ministry; and that is "do you love your children?". Then I ask if they would give their life for that of their child. Most all would answer yes to those questions. Then I will ask the question "who is raising your children now?".
I do not ask those questions to be mean, but to bring awareness. If their love was as strong as they proclaim, then they would no longer make selfish decisions that ultimately place their family in danger.
Their situations are not so different than ours. Many of us live our lives based on personal desires instead of the best interest of the ones we say we love. Many times what seemed the right thing to do, was really just the right thing for me and not for my family. This is why the Lord spends so much time in the bible explaining real love; the kind that has pure motives-the kind that is wrapped in truth.
