You have raised the main concern. No one understands how the admi nistrations plan is going to work or how they are going to pay for it.
How are the unemployed or those who are laid off suppose to pay for health insurance when they can barely afford to eat each week? What about those who are a few dollars over the eligibility limit for TennCare? Are they gonna change the eligibility for that? If I am not mistaken, it has been stated that health insurance is going to be required just like car insurance. Heck, I can't even afford car insurance.
silly conservatives can't even spell Glenn Beck. YeeeHaw!
Did everyone watch Glen Beck on the fox channel last week? That was really an eye opener. If you didn't get to see it go to

"The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of 'liberalism,' they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened."
- Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948
Here's your chance folks:
On August 26, Rep. Gordon will be holding a face to face meeting in Gallatin, this all day one-on-one will also be followed up by a town hall meeting moderated by the town's local newspaper.
I caught the tail end of this on the evening news so didn't get all the particulars, anyone else with further information please post.
Copied and pasted below is the full article I found on News2 website
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Congressman Bart Gordon, who represents Tennessee's Sixth Congressional District, has decided to go one-on-one with his constituents.
Kent Syler, Rep. Gordon's chief of staff, told News 2 Tuesday his boss will take on all comers, one-on-one, face-to-face, for three days straight.
He said, "If you want to speak to Bart about an issue whether it is veterans' issues, healthcare, social security, whatever, he's going to be doing face to face meetings, come in talk to him tell him what's on your mind... one-on-one."
The decision comes after the longtime Murfreesboro Democrat, like many of his Washington colleagues, faced stinging criticism about not holding a series of wide open town hall meetings on healthcare reform, as many Republicans and even some Democrats, have urged.
"We have never done the one-on-ones before, we thought that in this circumstance with this important issue, it would be a good thing to try," Syler added.
Countless town hall meetings for congressional members across the country have been received televised coverage showing angry individuals, from both sides of the healthcare debate.
Rep. Gordon had scheduled two phone meetings that constituents can listen to and participate on Friday August 21, but late Tuesday his office outlined a still evolving schedule of the three face-to-face meetings.
The meetings begin at a Murfreesboro community center on Monday, August 24 at 8 a.m.
According to Gordon's office, the all day one-on-one will be followed up with a town hall meeting at 7 p.m. moderated by Murfreesboro newspaper The Daily News Journal.
The next day, August 25, a similar one-on-one will take place in Cookeville.
Rep. Gordon's office is still trying to coordinate a town hall meeting.
August 26, Rep. Gordon takes his face-to-face constituent meeting to Gallatin where the all day one-on-one will also be followed up by a town hall meeting moderated by the town's local newspaper.
Tennessee's Sixth Congressional District, the district Rep. Gordon represents, includes the following counties: Bedford, Cannon, Clay, DeKalb, Jackson, Macon, Marshall, Overton, Putnam, Robertson, Rutherford, Smith, Sumner, Trousdale and part of Wilson.
He has an estimated 700,000 constituents.
Oh, I think the town hall meetings are great. It's about time that Americans get mad and take their country back. I want everyone on this blog to get a copy of the US Constitution and read every word of it. Then tell us how you feel. If you don't have a copy let me know. I would be happy to bring you a copy.
Has anyone been watching the town hall meetings many senators and Obama has been holding in different states and aired on CNN. I'm impressed how many people are showing up for these town hall meetings regarding the health care reform, they are down right MAD... Kudos! I don't know how much good it will do, but I applaud them for their efforts!!

What happened to my post?
How silly, to whomever has all this time on your hands to sit and play with this poll, why don't you go outside and play.
Smith, I agree with your post to a point, the Poll and political issues does/do have something to do with Portland and the people who live in it, healthcare reform is a very important issue and should be something everyone keeps a eye on because eventually it will affect each and every one of us in some way or another.
Polls are an easy way for individuals to express how they feel without getting into a verbal discussion which ends up in a heated battle, if someone wants to swing the poll it's not that hard but takes someone a lot of time and effort and is just silly but it happens.
also, anyone that feels they can contribute to this blog as a blog author is welcome to contact me or Charlie about becoming an author, you will find the links in the Blog category on the right of the page. The few of us that are active in making attempts to keep this blog active do what we can, if you're unhappy with the job we're doing all you have to do is make the contact and try to make a difference.
Smith--
Yes, this is a national and political issue, but Portland and the residents thereof are certainly going to be affected by it, whether we are affected as a healthcare consumer or as someone employed in a healthcare field, so it merits discussion here. This is a Portland issue as much as a national issue. If you think we will avoid divisive issues here by just talking about Portland issues, just wait until football season starts! If you don't want to participate in the healthcare debate, just participate in the discussion lines you like, just like I don't participate in the football season melee.
It went from 21 votes to 191 in like, 3 days. Yes, people get on here and pad these polls, which is why I don't understand for the people that keep putting these political polls up to continue to do so. This is a PORTLAND TENNESSEE blog. Like the headline suggests above, let's share ideas to make PORTLAND, TN a better place. Leave your national politics on all the other boards. Quit using our city board to spout these divisive national issues. Let's talk about city politics if we are going to talk politics. At least it would be relevant to this particular blog.
Total Votes: 189 There are not 189 people who visit this blog.
Whomever it is that is that is voting over and over is probably somehow thinking thier rigging the poll will actually make the law pass. Kind of like Acorn, although there little tactics worked unfortunately.
Yes, it appears someone had way too much free time on their hands this afternoon, over 50 votes in a few hours, hey who ever it is..... I have lots of house cleaning that you can do if you're that bored. I'm sure others can find things for you to do too.. lol
Aaargh, somebody has been rigging the poll again. Chuck--does that answer your question about how it is that Nancy Pelosi comes up with that 70% figure? You can arrive at any figure you want by asking an ambiguous question or by calling only people you know will give you the answer you want to hear. I have talked just casually with a wide variety of people, some insured, some not--all are scared to death of this plan and the implications. The uninsured do not believe that this will result in their ability to obtain insurance they can afford and get care that they need. The insured don't believe that they will continue to have the quality of healthcare and freedom to choose their own providers that they now have, nor do they believe any cost savings will result and in fact believe that the cost will rise, whether directly through increased premiums, or indirectly through increased taxes. I have a friend in the medical profession who is from Canada, now practicing in the U.S. who says absolutely we do not need to model a system after Canada's system because then where will all the Candians go who come to the U.S. to get the timely and quality healthcare they cannot get in their socialized medicine program?
It seems that in this country it pays to be either poor, either in reality or "on paper" --- or be rich. The working person who finds themself in the middle class is simply caught in the middle and gets the bill for everyone. Hopefully, things will change, but I'm not optimistic about that.
I think the main problem with this is that people who are willing to work can have coverage...but so can the person who opts to be lazy and sits on their butt all day (plus they get food stamps, free daycare for their 8 kids, and other government assistance).
I think in Tennessee alone, they should have re-evaluated EVERYONE who has TennCare and food stamps. Make them bring in tax returns for proof of income. Some (NOT ALL) of those are the ones who sit around and gripe about how the government does nothing for them when they get all the breaks.
I have worked since I was 16 plus went to college (I had to earn scholarships to pay for the schooling I did have). I have a job now that pays OK but has good benefits at this point. Things can change quickly though.
I just want to know when the everyday working Americans will get a break...
I totally agree with your statement. If this healthcare reform is anything like the stimulus package, not obama or many in congress came close to even reading a small percent of what was written in it, I doubt this will be any different.
Heres what I dont get: Theyve got this huge comprehensive plan to look through right? There are other countries, not just Canada, that have govt sponsored health care. So why dont our legislators take a look at all these plans, make a note of the good things, toss out as many bad things as possible, and present to us. Just copy whats available, but make it better.
Oh, I know why now. Theres this thing called special interests and lobbyists.
I guess my FIRST problem with this healthcare bill is that, according to the President and congressional leaders, healthcare has been broken for many years and yet, we have this RUSH to fix it by August or the world will end. We have a bill of more than 1000 pages that our elected representatives are expected to read, dissect, analyze, discuss, negotiate, take the pulse of their constituency...and they have oh, about 3 weeks to do that. So far that has been the hallmark of "Change"--make everything an emergency, then the people won't know they have been snookered until after the fact.
Did anyone see the Q&A that USA Today did with Nancy Pelosi. She actually claimed that 70% of Americans want this bill although every poll I've seen (including this one) never pass 50%. She also did the Obama tap dance when asked for specifics: that is she had NONE! If this passes, we're in bigger trouble than we are now!! For those of you who are interested, I was sent a link with a video detailing some of the real conditions faced in the Canadian system. If you're interested, here's the link:

Is this our future???

And again how are we paying for this, oh I forgot the people who work pay for it.
If it's so great, why won't congress have to use the same plan as everyone else will? And for that matter the president himself?
I received this today and thought I'd share with those that are interested. Hopefully this won't be another give a little tid bit of information here & there and not letting the public know what's really written between the lines, so to say.

Dear Friend,
As you read this, we are closer than ever to passing comprehensive health insurance reform that benefits American families and small businesses. Despite all the back and forth in the news right now, it is important to understand just how far we've come in this challenging process.
That's why I'm holding a press conference tonight at 8pm ET, and writing to let everyone know where we are, what's ahead, and why health insurance reform is so important.
Let me be clear: although Congress is still debating parts of the legislation we have achieved critical consensus on several key areas:
If you already have health insurance: reform will provide you with more security and stability. It will limit your own out of pocket costs and prevent your insurance company from dropping your coverage if you get too sick. You'll also have affordable insurance options if you lose or change your job. And it will cover preventive care like check-ups and mammograms that save lives and money.
If you don't have health insurance: you will finally have guaranteed access to quality, affordable health care, and you can choose the plan that best suits your family's needs. And no insurance company will be allowed to deny you coverage because of a pre-existing medical condition.
Now, I realize that the last few miles of any race are the hardest to run, but we can't stop now. There's no dispute about it: we cannot control our long-term fiscal health as a nation without health insurance reform. American families and small businesses understand that the health insurance status quo is taking away those things that they value most about health care. The stability and security that comes with knowing that you can get the treatment you need, when you need it. Without reform, we are consigning our children to a future of skyrocketing premiums and crushing deficits.
We have to seize this opportunity and pass health insurance reform this year. You can help by forwarding this email to your family and friends and letting them know what's at stake in this debate.
Thank you,
Barack Obama
