As we've all followed the trail over the last months there are many things to reflect upon, but none more significant than what today will bring. Obama's election has electrified millions of people with the hopes that America will become more embracing and more open to change. Today begins a new day for the people of our great country.
There shall be no easy tasks for this administration with the challenges that lay ahead. More importantly is the need to put down our differences and throw our support behind this President and his administration and pray for new beginnings for a better tomorrow.

  • Blog software, of course, allows authors to create new entries. Most blog software, including the software we use [Movable Type], also allows authors to delete entries they wrote and all of the comments associated with their entry. There is no way that we can keep blog authors from doing this, but we ask you not to! Please do not delete your entries from the blog nor any of the comments people make. This is a historical record of the thoughts of Portland, and we would like to preserve it.

  • People who create a new entry have the ability to turn off comments (i.e., comments are not allowed). Please do not use this option. The purpose of the blog is to have discussions, and turning off the comment flag defeats this purpose. Under very rare circumstances, the blog administrator may turn the comments flag off. This may occur if the discussion has gotten totally out of hand. We may also turn off comments on very old threads; after a time, the only comments being posted to some of these old threads are spam.

  • Moveable Type uses extensive filters to filter out spam. (It currently filters out over 100 spam messages per day.) This is done automatically, and we do not review what's being deleted. If you post a comment with two or more links to external sites, Moveable Type will assume that is spam.

  • If you are starting a new business, we welcome you to post one or two messages to introduce yourself and your business. However, please do not use the blog to advertise your business on a regular basis. For example, if you are a new real estate agent, we'd all like to know about you.     The blog administrators would like to remind everybody of a blog rule: closing posts to comments is frowned upon since this is a blog and not a bulletin board, and authors are asked not to do so. The purpose of the blog is to facilitate communications by having open discussions. This cannot be done if people cannot comment.

    We realize that some of you were probably not aware of this rule, so we won't change the flag on existing posts. However, starting today (1/10/2009), if an administrator finds an "allow comments" flag turned off, we will turn it on. Thank you very much for your cooperation!

    On a different subject, we might be upgrading the Movable Type platform of the blog. So, if you see changes in the weeks/months ahead, don't be alarmed.
