WHAT WAS THAT? 11-21-08

I live on the north side of town and it sounded like a jet taking off but it lasted for at least 15 minutes. What was it? To me it sounded like it came from the Gas Plant on TGT Road. Is this a common occurrence? I sure wish we would have been warned it was going to happen.
Tried to call P.D. and the Fire Department and the phone was busy. However I was offered (For a Fee of $2.00) for the phone company to keep calling the number. Needless to say I was NOT a Happy PORTLAND resident last night.

Thanks David! I kinda figured that's what it was. The only thing that upset me was there was no warning. But I don't know how a warning could be issued. I guess it is a learning curve. Now I know and I will pass it along to my neighbors...

Again Thanks David

Just about anywhere in town last you should have heard the noise. From my understanding there was a malfunction in one of the valves at the El Paso plant on TGT Rd last night. As soon as it started the PD and FD were swamped with phone calls, you were not the only one that heard it and not the only one calling. As soon as the valve blew, plant employees were on site within a few minutes working on it. You have to remember, this gas plant is a major supplier of natural gas to a lot of cities this side of the Mississippi River. That gas is under tremendous pressure, you can't just walk over to it and turn a knob like you do on your propane tank. The situation had to be assessed before the employees went to shutting down lines, it takes time. With the amount of noise it made from the pressure release, the gas was being blown high into the air and not into residence
