My friends and former colleagues over at The Portland Progressive now have their own website and blog. Back in 2005 and 2006 when I was editor, I had wanted to get a website and blog going so I would have a place to put the many extra pictures that we didn't have room for in the newspaper and also a chance to have some more direct feedback from the community. I experimented with video and podcasting in 2006 and tried to integrate it with the newspaper. Go visit their website at portlandprogressivenews.com, show them some love, and give them some ideas that they could use the website to serve their readers better. Weblogs thrive in communities where they link to each other, share readers and discussion. Are there any other Portland bloggers out there? Leave a link in the comments section.

The Protect Our Children Act

Help Pass Senate Bill 1738—The PROTECT Our Children Act

Hundreds of thousands of children are victims of sexual abuse each year. Due to the sheer lack of resources, law enforcement is unable to follow up on the majority of leads they have.

The PROTECT Our Children Act will:

Authorize over $320 million over the next five years in desperately needed funding for law enforcement to investigate child exploitation.
Mandate that child rescue be a top priority for law enforcement receiving federal funding.
Allocate funds for high-tech computer software that can track down Internet predators. Act Now!
Your U.S. senators will be voting on the bill soon, so it is crucial you contact them immediately. Before 09/26/2008

What's wrong with Portland

| 37 Comments

I'm new to Portland so I'm sure my opinions are very different from someone that was raised here. I just have one question why are we always complaining about what we don't have? I happen to like the small town of Portland. Do I wish I could just jump in the car and be at a mall in 5 minutes....of course...BUT I hate the traffic, the cost of things, the closeness of the houses, the trash, the amount of idiots you have to deal with in a bigger city. What I think we should do is stop complaining about what we don't have and CLEAN UP what we do have. Take pride in your little town, enjoy the small town that we do have. If everyone would just put energy in to the town and quit complaining I think a lot more would be done for Portland.

As requested by another poster;

What are areas of the town that you think need more police attention?
Whether it be traffic violations, or something else?
