digman is very confused. Wants to hate on all local "conservatives" that are against liquor, then brags about his drinking in the car in FL. Then he bashes all forms of liberalism on a national level.

Uneducated Portland citizenship at it's finest!

Posted by: John at August 2, 2008 04:02 AM

Why is everyone hating on digman, I agree with everything he says especially about Al Gore. I know a lot you are just diehard liberals and believes everything Gore says. Al Gore said many years ago we should be paying 4.00 a gallon for gas. I guess his wish has came true.

Posted by: Ilovedigman at August 1, 2008 07:45 PM

I also have to agree that digman is a jealous winer.

Posted by: DC at July 31, 2008 10:27 PM

SL you are right about Digman he is jealous and does need to get educated. I think he is just jealous of Al Gore because he is rich and can afford his own private jet. What a Winer.......BOOHOO Digman

Posted by: Aho at July 31, 2008 10:23 PM

as far as the upcoming football season, does anybody think that the beaver will have more than just 2 offensive plays in which to run this year?

Posted by: digman at July 31, 2008 12:11 AM

spoken like a true liberal. dont address the issues, just name-calling. algore is a marxist that would have the USA bow to the kyoto treaty which blames america for everything and leads to a global tax on the USA, while china, india, and other 3rd world countries are exempt and can continue to pollute without a care in the world.
what is it exactly that algore has done? the hysterical boob travels in private jets that pollute more in one trip than my 8-banger would emit in a year. he lives in a 10,000 sqare ft. home, but would have the rest of us live in abject poverty. algore is the epitome of hypocrisy.
for the life of me i cant see why weak minded people like you follow and worship this idiot that has no intention of conserving one iota of energy. oh yeah, i forgot, he buys carbon credits from himself. how does buying carbon credits from himself delete the damage that he does to the ozone???your education must be pretty limited if you can justify that missy.

Posted by: digman at July 31, 2008 12:07 AM

Digman you seem to get a little more stupid every post. Al Gore is a real man that is at least trying to do something. What have you done lately? It seems like all you do is get on here and WINE like a school girl. We don't need to drill for oil we need change the way we produce power and travel. Stop being jealous of people with an education.

Posted by: SL at July 30, 2008 10:34 PM

please algore let the least of us buy carbon credits from you so you can still fly in your
private jets while we all sacrifice for your
global warming fantasy. we are not worthy algore, please forgive us for our over-use. we should all conserve like you.thank you jim jones ooops i mean algore for leading by example.
what flavor kool-aid is this anyway?

Posted by: digman at July 30, 2008 08:18 PM

yeah its sad when 3.50 a gallon sounds like a bargain. too bad that the tree huggin' dingy harry reid and botox pelosi wont let the house and senate have an up or down vote on drilling for our own oil, cause they know they dont have the votes to stop it.how idiotic it is to not be able to use our own natural resourses that God put there for us to use.we really need to preserve that oil and make sure it stays safely in the ground. meanwhile china is starting to drill about 90 miles off of the coast of florida. liberal nonsense at its finest.

Posted by: digman at July 30, 2008 06:26 PM

$3.45 per gallon in Franklin KY this afternoon!!

Posted by: Judy at July 30, 2008 04:06 PM

Still $3.89 at Mapco yesterday--40 cents higher than Franklin, 9 cents higher than BP across the block, but still with several vehicles purchasing gas there.

Posted by: mg62 at July 30, 2008 07:56 AM

Gas is $3.49 this evening in KY, well worth the drive!

Posted by: MDL at July 28, 2008 06:30 PM

tennessee has a law the troopers call 'the pass the drink law' it is not illegal for a passenger
21 or over to drink alcohol in passenger or back of car. they are trying to change it. as long as the driver is completely sober it isnt anybodys
bussiness. when me and my wife go to florida she drives and i sit back and drink a 6 pack on the way and nobody is harmed.

Posted by: digman at July 28, 2008 12:39 PM

Darn! I paid $3.53 last night in Franklin, Ky.! Should've waited one more day.....LOL!!!

Posted by: Curious at July 27, 2008 09:35 PM

Got my $3.51 per gallon gas this evening, there wasn't a line at all when we got there, but one of the Bingo halls was just letting out and by the time we left they were 3 deep, Still a GOOD deal considering most in Portland are still in the upper $3.80's..

MR WOK'S Grand opening is this Tuesday, I stopped by today they have menu's out front....WOW they have everything.... Yes Dixie they have Sesame Chicken, and PuPu Platters for 2, haven't seen that since I left Florida. Can't wait to give them a try!

Posted by: Judy at July 27, 2008 09:21 PM

3.51 in Franklin and 3.95 in Portland what's wrong with this picture. If people in this town want to see the prices go down they should stop buying the highest priced gas in town. I personally haven't purchased gas in Portland since Feburary or March.

Posted by: CD at July 27, 2008 09:19 PM

I drove from Portland to Gatlinburg in April and from Portland to Pigeon forge in June. I kept a close eye to gas prices all the way. With the single exception of a CITGO station on TN109 near I-40, Portland had the highest gas prices of all the stations I saw along the route.

Posted by: Charlie at July 27, 2008 09:07 PM

Went to Wal-mart in Franklin today and the gas was $3.51 a gallon. I wanted to stop and fill up but did not want to wait in the long lines.

Posted by: DebraP at July 27, 2008 07:15 PM

Going back to a thread earlier this week regarding the price of gas--yes, it's much, much less in Franklin, but did you realize it's also much, much less in Gallatin? Yesterday it was $3.76 at a couple of stations on Long Hollow. Hmmmm...could it be that a few of our stations here in Portland are trying to make up for loss of profits from people trying to conserve gas at the expense of the people who try to spend their money here in Portland? If Portland businesses want people to do business here instead of elsewhere they at least have to be competitive.

Posted by: mg62 at July 27, 2008 06:51 PM

Its been a long time since I've had drivers ed, but I thought alcohol could not be in reach of the driver if it was in the car? Like, in the trunk. I saw somebody get in their car the other day while holding a brown bag of beer and I wondered why she didn't put it in the trunk. Am I mistaken? Isn't it supposed to be not in reach of the driver?

Posted by: Curious at July 27, 2008 05:44 PM

dontmakemelaugh,

yes not opened (wink wink!). If you believe that, then I have some oceanfront property in Arizona for you.

Posted by: JW at July 27, 2008 05:11 PM

Do you mean if the beer is opened?? Not against the law to have it in your car if it's not opened.

Posted by: dontmakemelaugh at July 27, 2008 03:30 PM

about the whole LBTD thing, which I know is a tired issue for many, but I think the continued debate on the issue is warranted.

Something makes absolutely no sense to me at all....maybe I am not the sharpest stick in the drawer BUT....why is it that it is alright to go to Mapco or any other convenience store and buy beer by the case after case after case...walk out an put it in your car, which to me is even more dangerous because its in the car....this is alright BUT, going to a restaurant and getting a beer or glass of wine, which is not in the car is illegal?

This has never made any sense ot me at all. I mean I understand all of the religious people being so terrified of anything that has to do with alchohol, after all last time the issue came up for election all we heard from our local church folks was the typical preaching of fear as to how selling alchohol would lead to sex clubs, nudity and sin run rampant, but to allow people to carry beer (alchohol) to thier car and drive with the alchohol in the car seems much more dangerous to me than a drink at a restaurant.

Whats wrong with this picture?

I am not a huge enviromentalists. Of course I want clean air and water and such. But if the greenies really want people to go green, it's going to have to save them green. Many of the things that are out now will cost you more money up front than they save you over the lifetime of the product.

The products that have closed this gap such as the flourescent bulbs and the tankless water heaters are what's doing well. All this other stuff won't really catch on unless it becomes cost-efficient to do so. Thankfully, this is starting to happen because I love saving money.

Many of the envirfolks try to guilt people to go green. When it gets to the point that it actually helps people make ends meet, you won't have to convince them to go green. A ,*gasp*, free market economy will push them to do it. Imagine that.

Posted by: Tim Coker at July 26, 2008 11:55 AM

I wish we could afford to buy the solar panels for our house. What a great way to save energy and money.

As for the compact florescent light bulbs you are not suppose to just throw these away in your every day trash. They do contain mercury. We switched all our bulbs over last year.
We also had replacement windows installed, new insulation in attic and under house and a dual heat pump installed. The differnce in the heating bill is really noticable.
Our next project is to install the tankless water heater which will save gallons of water every month.

Posted by: DebraP at July 26, 2008 11:03 AM

DC your right about green house's. My Uncle bought a new green home last year and has no electric bill. He has solar on his roof which looks just like regular shingle's and all the excess power goes out into the grid.

Posted by: SLS at July 25, 2008 11:02 PM

Digman you better stock up on regular light bulbs because they will stop making them in 2012. If you don't like floresent bulbs then there is always LED bulds. You also haven't got a clue about going green and how nice green homes are. I thought it was stupid until I did a little research for myself and saw how much money I can save each month. I've switched all my bulbs out to floresent and LED and installed a programmable thermostat and now save 20 to 30 a month on my elecric bill. If you don't like to save money then green isn't for you.

Posted by: DC at July 25, 2008 10:44 PM

digman,
you seem to know they are unfair, I do not (as I said)
have you been targeted?

I know for a fact that many individuals (not business owners or good ole boys)have been given extensions (which all can ask for) simply because they were elderly or could not quickly resolve the situation in a timely manner.

If you have some proof, please show it to me and I will look at it
thanks for the post

how come they get to drag anything out? when joe-sixpack gets a notice in the mail from the city about his junk car, he has 15 days to comply or the city will take him to court and tow his car off.why do some get more time to drag out justice?
answer: good 'ol boy politics.
you still didnt answer fully. let me revise and ask again
(and it doesnt matter how many meetings i attend i still keep up) will you move and ask for an up or down vote to suspend all action on codes violations until they are enforced equally??
isnt that just fair?

Posted by: digman at July 25, 2008 03:12 PM

florescent light bulbs contain mercury.regular light bulbs do not. mercury is dangerous to all living things. changing to florescent bulbs will lead to mercury-lined landfills, leaking into the water table.its a left wing no-brainer!!!!!!!

Posted by: digman at July 25, 2008 02:58 PM

digman,
no need to wonder, just come to the meetings. there you would have heard me say (more then once, and just recently) home owners are too easy of a target and unless we are going to apply the same standards to ourselves (city) and businesses, then we should leave joe-sixpack (coca-cola of course) alone.

as far as the junk place I think you are referring to, we have worked with the county and a time limit has been set and the property owner has been notified; if an owner is not willing to comply, it often drags out due to legal guidelines

as far as vote counts go, please contact your sumner county election commission (http://www.votesumnertn.org/) file a complaint or ask how the counting procedure is verified - just as long as your eager for truth, no matter who wins

LBTD will always be a sore spot on both sides, do not know if it will be on the ballot, but I assume the pro side will have it on there; and I hope you will not be offended, that if the pro side wins this time, and the con side puts it on the following election to have it removed - you are for equal rights for all sides right? democracy has to work both ways.

but please understand that LBTD alone will not be the deciding factor in attracting new business; if it passes, I am sure some restaurants will see that as a good thing; if it does not, we still have opportunities for commercial growth; and I believe we are ready now to support certain kinds of businesses; but we have to be proactive and seek them out and not just wait for them to find us.

as someone who has never "been on the inside" of much, I cannot with a 100 percent accuracy say that there has not been selective enforcement when it comes to clean up (but squeaky wheels do get the grease); but I say this, that I have consistently spoke up for property owner rights and the need for fairness; for rich and poor!

but please understand this one thing, we can disagree how to accomplish it, but our common goal should be the betterment of our city and each of us should be willing to take an active role in it
thanks for the post

silly frank, if we drill for our own oil, we'll have to drill a hole in the ground and that would be devistating to the enviro-wackos. you should just build yourself a hut and graze with the livestock. but dont eat the livestock you evil human.

Posted by: digman at July 25, 2008 02:05 PM

its ok frank dont let anybody silence you or run you off. algore is a hypocrite. all of you that want to 'go green' go ahead, find a cave to move into and eat topsoil, we wont bother you but for gosh sakes dont tell me what to drive, eat, or what kind of lightbulb to use 'CAUSE IT A'INT NONE
OF YOUR BUSINESS.

as far as the retail business goes, its funny to
read about how callis plans to bring new business
to this antiquated town when he knows good and well that nothing anyone wants is coming here until we have lbtd. i think we get to vote on this again in october(if somebody can confirm please do) and when we do we need to have a public, not closed door count of the vote with represenitives of both sides. funny how it lost by just 4 or 5 votes and no recount was allowed.
what say you callis?
on the subject of codes, i have talked to a respected sumner co. lawyer and this lawyer stated
that the city of portland can be sued for selective enforcement of codes.i am so sick of seeing the tool and die junkyard that everyone sees as soon as they pass the "proud progessive portland" sign then the city limits sign and our concil must be really afraid to confront this eyesore, must be somebodys buddy.
councilman callis, i respect you for blogging with the citizens seems like youre the only one, but is it right to make average joe-sixpack get rid of his classic car that the city has deemed junk while at the same time allowing the tool and die junkyard (that has junk vehicles that have been there for 10 plus years) to get away with clear violations? shouldnt all action on citizens cease until we enforce the codes not only on the little guy but on those who are higher in council
and as you know have influence in the city????
is it right??? do you agree with the selective enforcement???do you deny selective enforcement???
will you bring it up in the next council meeting???

Posted by: digman at July 25, 2008 01:56 PM

Its funny how when a barrel of oil goes up the gas prices instantly go up, Over the last two weeks the the price for a barrel of oil has dropped almost $20 a small change at the price of gas. Plus I believe Kentucky has cheaper gas tax than TN. Thats one of the reasons why you are starting to see a drop of gas prices. Also the Republicans are trying to force the dems into voting for drilling for more oil and thats another reason its starting to go down because the speculators know there is about to be more oil on the market even its 7 years from now.

Posted by: frankg at July 25, 2008 01:46 PM

Ace - You're spot on!

FYI - If you didn't already know and are making a trip near Franklin KY the Flying J and Keystop gas is down to $3.59 per gallon, I filled up there over a week ago at $3.67 and thought I got a bargain!! Over the past week or more their prices have been going down, why is the gas so cheap there and every where else around it is still at almost $4. per gallon.

Posted by: Judy at July 25, 2008 10:37 AM

yo,
I don't think liquor was the intoxicant in question. Drugs are more likely to be the culprit.
Really, who is going to get drunk in Gallatin, and drive to Portland to vandalize the skate park, although maybe the vandals read on this blog that patrols are sparse at Meadowbrook and thought, why not!
Maybe if Portland had LBTD, the increased revenue would allow more patrols (and officers) to keep an eye on parts of town that often go unnoticed.

Posted by: Ace at July 24, 2008 05:22 PM

I'm not sure how LBTD ties into vandalism at the skate park but since you brought it up....I'll bet the ones who vandalized the skate park had been drinking. Probably had a drink with their dinner at one of the local communities that allows it. (lol, lol)

Posted by: yo at July 24, 2008 03:43 PM

I'm disappointed to read that the skate park has been closed due to vandalism. There has been so much around town about the lack of things to do for our kids and when something comes about it gets destroyed. Perhaps this is why nobody wants to take the risks to invest for them, too bad a few rotten apples ruin it for everyone! And those against LBTD said that we would need a drastic increase in Police patrols if it passed!! Now we need increased security patrols for the parks..... go figure!

Reader,

I am not sure if you mean Portland Fan or portland fan? If you mean me (Portland Fan), I don't only talk about the negatives. However, you have to admit there are some out there. But I also believe this town has some amazing attributes.
Why are you complaining about reading the newspaper? Many people in this town read one of the two papers in Portland for their news?
Surely, you don't read the Tennessean?

Posted by: Portland Fan at July 19, 2008 10:45 PM

Portland Fan, why do your posts always seem to be so negative about things. I also have noticed how you LOVE to point out that you read the newspapers in town and only mention the Progressive by name. You also seem to only bring up issues that have appeared in the paper. I normally wouldn't care but I've noticed a pattern, do you have a motive behind this behavior?

Posted by: Reader at July 19, 2008 03:12 AM

I understand it is easy to always see the bad side to everything.
If we do nothing, people complain why we don't.
If we do something, people complain it is either not enough or the wrong thing.

But there are supporters also, who are glad there are those actively looking at different solutions.

Just like this Trane meeting, yes we knew they were here to pitch us. They came straight out and said they were there to make money. Did not expect them not to.

But if you can get a major business to look at every single aspect of your city (energy wise), and then give you a detailed report of their findings, why would you not?
And maybe, just maybe, they have some good ideas we can put to use.

The men and women who serve this city are not dummies (though it is easy to portray them as such), and they do care about our direction; remember they live here too.

I personally look forward to meeting with them (Trane) in about 2 months, and we will be just as enthusiastic and skeptical as we were the first time; and along the whole process, we hope to help this city prosper.

Having a negative outlook does not make you smarter, nor does having a positive out look make you naive.

But when you are smiling and positive, it sure does make everyone else feel good.
Thanks for the post,
mike

Posted by: Councilman Callis at July 18, 2008 03:30 PM

Hmmmm...just read the Portland Progressive's story about this, and I see that PW Director Brian Goodwin is also a bit skeptical about Trane's program. Smart man. They will, indeed, let us know whether or not it could work for us. How likely is it they are going to say "sorry...we can't help you"? It's a sales pitch; be cautious.

Posted by: portland fan at July 18, 2008 01:07 PM

Never said the program was free, simply that the study was....
They offer budget neutral alternatives.
This means they can update without any extra cost to the city and they finance it.
We were told they would let us know whether or not it could work for us.
We are fully aware of how these programs work.
As I stated in the public meeting, the good thing is that we will have a cost study done at no expense, and it gives the city insight into its energy usage.
Thanks for the post,
mike

Posted by: Councilman Callis at July 18, 2008 12:02 PM

Trust me, Trane's program isn't free. They're selling something. That's just a way to get you to listen to their sales promotion.

Posted by: portland fan at July 18, 2008 08:07 AM

Actually, the Trane company has just came and made a presentation; they will start a study (free to us) about this very thing
They will evaluate everything from water meters to light bulbs, and present us with some solutions.
Thanks for the post
mike

I hope a councilperson can answer this question.

I would like to know what Portland is doing to save energy and "Go Green". Anything??

Posted by: DebraP at July 17, 2008 08:56 AM

mg62,

With all do respect, I am not understanding how government whether city or county etc....has anything to do with how a business treats it costumers.

Improving quality of service etc...with existing business, is up to the business's not the city council or local government. Maybe I am missing your point.

Posted by: JW at July 16, 2008 06:05 PM

Councilman Callis--
I'm happy to do business with Portland businesses who want my business and who sell a product worth having. It's unfortunate that a number of them don't care whether they take my money or not...CVS is one good example. Fortunately, I've had excellent service thus far with Walgreens so that money I used to spend with CVS is staying here in Portland. That isn't always the case. When I choose to do business in Franklin, Gallatin, Hendersonville, or Bowling Green, it is because lack of choice, lack of quality, lack of service force me to do so. I don't want to be "shamed on" for not keeping my sales tax dollars in Portland until quality, choice, and service are available here--then I won't have a reason to go elsewhere. Improving service and quality of product in existing businesses in Portland are steps that could be taken now, without a steering committee.

Posted by: mg62 at July 16, 2008 03:43 PM

Just came thru town and seen Ronnie McDowell up in front of one of the gas stations by Portland Builders with his guitar in hand, they appeared to be filming and taking photo's. Must be for his new song about Mr Gasman.

Posted by: Judy at July 16, 2008 11:04 AM

Actually, this retail committee was conceived before I was elected, back in 2004; and after the election, The Mayor and myself started working on it; He too, was wanting a branch of local government committed to commercial recruitment. We originally formed an Ad-Hoc comprised of a few people and we received some education on recruitment and retention from TVA. They have a program that is very beneficial and we were one of a few that were able to participate.
Then we worked back and forth with the chamber to see how best to move forward with this project; and as we weighed the pros and cons of some different scenarios I moved forward with the idea of a technical board, comprised of individuals with 2 qualifications; 1. Some connection or expertise in an area beneficial to retail, and 2. A desire to see Portland excel.
I wanted this to be a partnership between the city and the chamber so that we could be most effective in presenting ourselves and reaching out to those potential investors.
The team consists of; the chamber director, 2 local business owners that are chamber members, the city’s economic developer, the city planner, 1 Mayor appointee, and 1 council representative.
This is a standing committee, set up like many others, such as parks, public works, etc. To me this was vital to ensure a constant and consistent board. The creation of this board had to meet approval of different bodies and we were able to meet for the first time yesterday 7-14-2008; just to outline our objectives and how best to move forward.
We will have a meeting date line-up out soon and the meetings will be posted.
Having a standing committee is a good step in the right direction – and I think many good ideas will come from it.
This body can not force anyone to invest or to come, but we can let them know we are interested and we can help overcome any stumbling blocks to them coming by being more proactive.
The greatest thing we can all do now, is to do our best to shop in Portland when possible. This helps the retention of business and strengthens our town as a whole. I understand for some it is hard to pass up the savings that are available across the state line; but the truth remains that every dollar spent there is one less that goes into our, city, county, and state.
We in essence help build their schools and roads and put no strain on their infrastructure.
Thank you for your support as we move forward.
Mike

JW - Good point, wonder if any of the councilmen seats that will be up for re-election will be going for another term? Isn't the Mayor's seat up for election this year too?

Posted by: Judy at July 16, 2008 10:58 AM

Maybe the fact that there are local elections coming up is the motivation behind the whole "committee" being formed.

Funny how politicians tend to suddenly get busy when there's an election coming up. Maybe we should have an election every year.

Wow! Me, too. A store in town said "Oh this couch is kid-proof and pet-proof." What a crock! I hate my furniture!!!!!!!! I just read in today's paper that I can go green with antique furniture. If I had spent my 2,000 dollars on antique all wood furniture it would probably still be here ten years from now. The furniture I have now will probably end up in the garbage!!!!!!! If I only knew now what I didn't know then.

Posted by: Curious at July 16, 2008 08:36 AM

SL - Been there, done that, spent over 4k on 2 pcs of living furniture from a top end furniture store several years ago only for it to fall apart in 3 yrs, & I don't have kids in the house. You don't always get what you pay for!

Posted by: Judy at July 16, 2008 07:11 AM

You all need to go to some real furniture stores.

Posted by: SL at July 15, 2008 09:27 PM

DebraP - I think I know what furniture store you are speaking of, and I have done business with them. Now my purchase was an in store stock living set and an ordered dining set, the dining set came in 3 weeks on the nose as they said it would, absolutely loved the set, now the item I bought from onsite in store after getting it home did not like the quality (my fault) trying to save a few bucks, the people there have gone out of their way to make me satisfied. I have since ordered an upgrade to my living room furniture which will be in in 3-4 weeks, they said probably closer to 4 weeks as the floods did put some of the suppliers way behind. My sister made a purchase (ordered) from La-Z-boy, she waited almost 6 weeks for hers to come in and one of her recliners was upholstered with the material inside out!!, now she waits another 5-6 weeks for the replacement. It is very frustrating furniture shopping, especially with so little locally to shop from.

Posted by: Judy at July 15, 2008 05:29 PM

I need to vent alittle about the furniture store here in Portland.

I wanted to spend some of our government rebate money in Portland and I needed 6 new dining room chairs so I thought I would go to the local furniture store. The chairs were not is stock and had to be ordered. I was told they would be there in 2 weeks. 2 weeks came and no chairs. 3 weeks came and no chairs so I call and the store tells me they should be there by the end of the week. Nope. 4 weeks came and finally the chairs arrive. They were just what I ordered but one of the chairs had a defect I didn't like and the store ordered a new one and said it would be here in, you guessed it, 2 weeks. On 07/14 it has been 4 weeks and no chair. I called yesterday and they said it should be here by Friday which I doubt.

My point is, if you buy something from this store and it's not in stock, go elsewhere unless you want to wait a month to receive your item.

I will never buy from there again!!!

Well something is better than nothing as far as the retail committee. Wether it's too little too late remains to be seen, I look at it this way the more we have out there working on it the better chance even if a small one that we may get some new retail.

Is next year a City Election year? I believe it is. hummmmm I guess soon will start the campaigning for new council people, any names rolling around? Is there a time frame for this? Will we see LBTD on the ballot again? Only failed by 5 votes last time.

Yeah and local businesses seem to do a good job of running shoppers off

went to family dollar coke guy was setting up displays
had 4 isles blocked including 3 to the check out and hes no where to be seen
what a fire hazard

went to cvs they are redoing store
every other aisle empty, can't find a thing newly constructed aisles block carts,
workers knock you out of the way and have loud obnoxious conversations
like telling one of them to go work overseas and you can avoid paying child support on your "5" kids.
I wanted to knock him off his ladder

went to gamerz 3 times 11:15am 11:30am and 12:10 on 2 different days and they are not open!
sign says open 11am on these days, they lost my business

went to food lion and asked for a quarter lb of swiss cheese, I got 1 lb of swiss cheese sliced 1/4" thick..........

Calgon take me away! Tomorrow I'm off to Rivergate!

We as a city have nothing to offer national retail chains to locate here. This has happened time and time again. I don't care who you appoint to a committee, it is all a farce. Keep shopping in our neighboring cities like we always have.

The primitive thinking of one or two of our city leaders is finally kicking us in our collective rear-ends. Franklin is about to explode with retail and restaraunt commerce, and all we can do is sit back, watch, then go shop and eat there.

I have read that the city council has created a retail committee to help bring retail companies to Portland. The group has some great people on it like Jim Hodges, Mike Callis, Amy Wald, Denise Geminden, etc.
It is great the city is making this move to make a push to get retail business to Portland.
However, my worry is what do we have that a retail company would be interested in? I think there is a lot of work to be done before we can expect to have some business say, "Let's do it."
Creating the committee is a great idea, but are we doing too little, too late?

Kid - I'm not sure but isn't Thurman Kepley Road in the County and not in City Limits? If so, you need to direct your concerns over the road issue with the County as it wouldn't be the City's responsibility if you are not in the City Limits.

Posted by: Judy at July 11, 2008 12:57 PM

I live out on thurman kepley road. the road is super narrow and there is always a near head on. well the county came and started to do some actual work on it. then they stopped for several months. well they finally came back and started to widen the roads. nice one would think. but they only used a giant scrapper that pushed dirt back. well not only did they do that, but they moved several mailbox's without permission and scraped that as well. so now our road is just a gravel heap that can get you a lil' mud on the tires. thanks for the great job guys. you should be proud.

Posted by: kid dynomite at July 11, 2008 11:53 AM

Do my eyes deceive me? Is there actual work going on at Jackson Road? I noticed there were pink-ribboned stakes along the route for the last month, but are they finally starting the process of straightening the roadway??

HURRAYYYYY!!!

Tim,

Thats very funny, but true.

Seems every time we start a diet, every single temptation makes its apearance.

We quit smoking about a year ago and right after we quit we started getting coupons in mail for free cig's and would turn on the TV and see someone light up.

Doesn't make it any easier. Luckily for me I am not a big Donut eater.

Posted by: JW at July 9, 2008 08:35 AM

The donut place opened up because the universe knew my wife and I were going back on our diet. We splurged there a couple of days before we started and now I hear it calling my name if I drive by the place. My wife and I really liked the variety and the donuts were delicious.

The bicycles were used during the Strawberry Festival and the big concert. It was easier for the cops to get around and through the crowds. The newspaper did a story about the bikes. I think I remember that the bikes were given to them from another police department. I remember wondering why the other police department gave them up.

Posted by: Curious at July 7, 2008 06:29 AM

The donut place in town had plenty of flavor when I was there. The muffin that I had may have been one of the best that i have ever eaten. In my opinion the walmart donuts all taste the same.

I've also seen the bicycle police in Portland. I can't see a need for them other than to save gas. Portland just isn't big enough for them. They could walk and acomplish the same thing.

Posted by: DC at July 6, 2008 10:48 PM

Hey, I've been real busy lately and just picked up the newspaper.
I saw where the Shell Station had been robbed at gunpoint. Did they catch the guy? And I read the story about Ronnie McDowell's new song about gas prices. Cute idea!!! Because of the economy, McDowell might have a hit on his hands.
P.S. - Did both of the Portland newspapers have those two stories?

Posted by: Portland Fan at July 6, 2008 10:27 PM

We have bicycle cops?

Posted by: Moose at July 6, 2008 06:27 PM

Maybe I haven't been paying attention or haven't been out and about the town at the right time, but has Portland had bicycle cops for a long time? We were coming home last night and saw 2 on the corner of 52 and 109.

Posted by: mg62 at July 6, 2008 04:20 PM

Wal-mart has better donuts then the place in town. They have no real flavor other then sickly sweet. They need to add more cinnamon to the cinnamon donuts and the eclairs are frosted with some sort of weak hazel nut glaze or something. The muffin we got wasn't that great either. I've had better muffins using a cake mix.

Posted by: Moose at July 6, 2008 08:45 AM

With the high fuel prices we are having these days. Now would be a great time for the current city officials to by working on getting us some resturants to eat at. A Captain D's, Shoney's, Taco Bell, KFC, or even Dairy Queen would all be great to have right now. I would even like to see Burger King back again.

Posted by: CD at July 5, 2008 09:54 PM

The fireworks in White House were GREAT! Can't believe how big the crowd was! Kudos to the City of White House. Saw many Portlanders there!!!!

If you're looking for a quick fix on fresh general veggies and seasonal fruit I stop on the corner of Fowler Ford and South Russell, they have tomatoes, cabbage, potatos, beans, peaches, squash etc, when cantalope, watermelon and corn come in they have that as well, been very pleased for the past 2 years, so much so that we don't plant a garden anymore, but when we need to buy for a cookout (5 dozen ears of corn) or can tomatoes, beans, peaches and pickles we go to mennonites.

Posted by: Judy at July 2, 2008 09:20 PM

We went to the Mennonites in Scottsville yesterday and really enjoyed the drive. Like Judy said the scenery is real pretty and the people are very friendly. We got a map from the visitor center in Bowling Green and it showed where they were. With the way the economy is going I wish one was closer.

Question? Where is the Farmers Market at the State Line? Is it the one just to the left when you turn right on 31W from 109?

Posted by: Lee at July 2, 2008 08:41 PM

We, too, go to the Mennonites in Scottsville. Great selection and prices! There is also a sizeable produce stand at the state line and a farmers market downtown in Franklin, KY.

Posted by: MDL at July 2, 2008 06:27 PM

For fresh produce we go for a Saturday drive to the Mennonites in Scottsville KY, I-65 to HWY-100 East to Perry town Road there is Habeggers market, Perrytown produce a woodfurniture shop and others we visit several times a year (closed on Sun). Fresh Produce, Jams, Baked Breads & Cookies There is about a dozen or more places out in the area and it's a bit of a drive, from portland about 45 min but some real pretty country scenery.

Posted by: Judy at July 2, 2008 11:21 AM

The area where you get emissions testing, in front of Stevison Ham, was suppose to be a farmers market when it was first built. Don't know what happened.

Posted by: DebraP at July 2, 2008 08:36 AM

There is a Gallatin Farmers Market. Haven't been but I just learned about it. It's located at the Produce Shed next to the Gallatin P.D. It's a covered, open-air market averaging 4 - 8 vendors farm vendors.

Posted by: Curious at July 2, 2008 07:44 AM

We too bought some donuts and they were good. We went to Bowling Green yesterday and found a Farmers Market down the road from the Mall and it got us to wondering is there a Farmers Market here that is set up every week?

I dont know if anyone has noticed, but the Tool and Die shop/JUNK YARD on 109S at the city limits has started to cleanup. I am guessing the city has won a long battle against them. I saw truck loads of junk, metal and tires coming out of there. I hope they keep cleaning till it is spotless.
