Wanda, I am sorry I missed your reception. I was working here at home and could not get away. Congratulations on your retirement. Hopefully you can get Raymond away to do some traveling with you. I'm sure I'll be seeing you around.

The year after we moved to Portland, I was hired as a typist at The Portland Leader. On my first Monday morning, Wanda came in the office, and mentioned that her legs were a little sore because she had been "buck dancing" over the weekend. I looked at her in bewilderment, and asked her to please explain to this confused Yankee just what "buck dancing" was. That was the first of many new terms that I learned in my years in Portland.
Wanda has always been an upbeat person to have in the workplace, and even when things didn't go right, she tries to see the positives. What a great way to look at things! She knows everyone in town, and that was helpful for a new person like me, who was trying to learn the ropes in a new town.
Thanks for everything, Wanda!

Working for two competing newspapers, it was sometimes awkward interacting with the representatives of the Leader at events. It was a little easier relating with Wanda because she had worked with my father for many years and one of her daughters is my age and was an acquaintance during my high school years. She was friendly, kind and had a sense of humor during those awkward moments. I wish her the best in her retirement and look forward to seeing her around town.
