Vacationing Close to Home

With the price of gas these days soaring and Summer vacationing knocking at the door, I thought it might be a good topic to start where everyone can post their favorite places to visit that are close by. This might help others in planning a summer vacation that won't cost a fortune to travel to. More and more people are moving here from other states, I'm sure they would appreciate your input on places to visit in TN or KY as well. If your favorite spots have a web site, perhaps you could include that in the posting.

Happy Posting - Judy

I dont think anyone has mentioned it yet but Bledsoe Creek State Park is just down the road in Gallatin. It has some really nice campsites and facilities. Also , you can come up with lots of good ideas watching Tennessee Crossroads on NPT or from the back of The Tennessee Magazine that CEMC puts out.

Some trips that I would recommend are to the Lynchburg area. Its a nice drive, or ride if you have a motorcycle, and the distillery tours are awesome. You can probably tour both Jack Daniels and George Dickel the same day. Bardstown Ky is another short trip with some similar attractions.

If you've never tried rafting, you can go raft the Ocoee in east Tn. There are several rafting companies that would be glad to take you down the river.

JW Wow Land Between The Lakes area is huge and it looks like lots of campgrounds. We will have to check it out later this year. We leave Tuesday for a trip we have had planed (way before $4 a gallon) for a long time. We are going to Pa, NH, and NY, had we not planed this before we moved here. I doubt we would be going. But we are looking forward to saying Hi to our east coast friends and family. We will stay close after this trip. These gas prices are a bummer for us we wanted to tour the East Coast once we moved here. But we love it here and will stay close and get to know Tennessee and Kentucky.. And count our blessings. We are much better off then most during these trying times... OK I'll shut up...

Cave City does have a lot of things to do and a great place to stay is Camp Jellystone. Yogi and Boo Boo were there and there were lots of nice, clean cabins very reasonably priced along with scheduled activities to keep the kids busy while they were there. I took a group of teen girls last year for my daughter's 13th birthday. They did bingo, crafts, swimming, played pool in the game room and finished it off with some karaoke in the pavilion. They had a great time. My 4 year old went with us and has been asking to go back. Check it out! http://www.jellystonemammothcave.com/

Lee,

Bailey's point is a beautiful place.

My family has camped for years and pulled our travel trailer around until this year.

This year we parked the camper at a seasonal campground at Kentucky Lake which is only about a 2 hour drive from here...perfect distance for a get away.

We love it and will keep it there for years to come.

There is tons of things there to do, Baggetts Playhouse, Kentucky Opry, food galore, the town of Grand Rivers is a wonderful place.

Give it a try, you will love it......

well, were off to a weekend at the Lake.

I have been to both places already mentioned and they are great. One place my wife and I found a few years back that is really great for a variety of activities is Horse Cave and cave City Kentucky.

As you would imagine you can go through a lot of caves, but they also have horseback riding, canoeing and rafting on the Green River, a couple of putt putt golf courses, a few small amusement parks for the kids, and I'm sure moe since its been a few years since I have been up there.

It's on I-65, about an hour past Bowling Green.

Judy this is a great idea for those of us that not only just moved here but for those who want to get-away-from-it-all but stay close in order to save fuel cost. We have not camped yet but we found a place and we went and visited by car and it was only 40 miles from our front door. It is called Bailey's Point on Barren River Lake in Kentucky

I have a feeling we are going to try and visit Fall Creek in the very near future.

One of my favorites is Fall Creek Falls State park:
It is approximately a 1 hour drive up I-40 to cookville, exit 288 onto Hwy 111 go aproximately 40 miles the entrance to the park is on the left and about a 10 minute drive to the actual entrance. The park is fantastic and the falls is a must see. Golf, Camping, Lodging - Hotel, Lodging - Cabins, boating, biking, etc etc. web site:
