I felt this needed it's own post, Thank You - Jessica for the information
I am hoping that it is okay that I post this here, I know its not in Portland, but I hope that it is a cause that our town is interested in, as I know it is a very important issue to me..

My 3 year old son has just been recently diagnosed with Autism and is attending a special ed. program here in Portland provided by Sumner County, however, I must say that recently I have learned of some incredibly disturbing news regarding who is responsible for the care of my child and it has really upset me. Apparently, Sumner County can hire ANYONE as a teacher's aide, even in a special education setting, with ZERO education on SE, ZERO experience, and during the time that the certified teacher is absent, these people are still allowed to care for the children solo. How can they allow this? Autism, along with every other special education need is complicated and without knowledge and understanding of how to handle these children and situations, no one needs to be left in charge of these children without some type of training. I am very disappointed in the recent hire on I have encountered in my son's class and apparently there is nothing I can do about it..it makes me worried for my son's future in the Sumner County school system.

Thank you for the information. It has come to my attention that the Sumner Board of Education has an enrichment program during the summer called Camp I Can Be Me. It's for nine days in June. It is supposed to work on social skills in a camp setting. If you contact the Sumner County Board of Education I'm sure they can give more information about it or you can contact Elizabeth Saunders an Autism Coordinator for Sumner Co. Schools 264-5804 for more info.
