A Reminder to Builders and Contractors
[This message was originally posted in 2005. Charlie]
Today I was walking from the parking lot by the Kerley Building across McGlothlin Street towards the Subway. While crossing McGlothlin, I found thirty (yes, 30) 3-inch nails lying all over the street. I picked them all up and threw them in a nearby dumpster.
I would like to remind contractors and builders to be very careful of the stuff they have in the back of their trucks. Please make sure your cargo is secured properly and your tailgate is closed. Dumping nails in the road is a very dangerous and expensive thing to do.
Not only can the nails end up in a tire, they can end up in somebody's foot. Your carelessness endangers the lives of all of us; a tire with a nail could blow out on the freeway; you cost a lot of people money in having to get tires repaired or replaced; you send people to the emergency room to get wounds fixed.
Please be careful.

Not just cargo, but bring your trash home with you as well and don't throw it out the window in someone elses yard. It's a shame that one has to spend an hour before mowing because you have to walk the yard closest to the road to make sure stuff isn't out there you don't know of. Bungie Cords, Soda/Beer-Bottles/cans, McDonalds Bags, If you need to throw things out your window, please throw money..... LOL

I would like to add to this by also reminding people to secure their cargo. My wife hit an 80lbs - 90lbs piece of I-beam that fell out of the back of a truck in February. It happened on Hwy 52 at night and caused $5000.00 worth of damage to her new car including punching a hole in the oil pan, blowing out her tire and damaging the engine cradle. Granted our insurance paid the majority of the repairs, but she had to pay her deductable ($500.00), because of someones lack of resposibility.
