Adult Bullies in the Workplace

From the Canada Safety Council:
***************************************************
Profile of a Bully
Adult bullies, like their schoolyard counterparts, tend to be insecure people with poor or non-existent social skills and little empathy. They turn this insecurity outwards, finding satisfaction in their ability to attack and diminish the capable people around them.
A workplace bully subjects the target to unjustified criticism and trivial fault-finding. In addition, he or she humiliates the target, especially in front of others, and ignores, overrules, isolates and excludes the target.
If the bully is the target's superior, he or she may: set the target up for failure by setting unrealistic goals or deadlines, or denying necessary information and resources; either overload the target with work or take all work away (sometimes replacing proper work with demeaning jobs); or increase responsibility while removing authority.
Regardless of specific tactics, the intimidation is driven by the bully's need to control others.
***************************************************
Does anybody have any good stories about adult bullies at work? I would like to hear them, and I would like to hear how you dealt with the situation. Personally, I think adult bullying at work, is a huge problem that is seldom discussed.
In telling your story, please do not use peoples' names or company names. Use a generic name such as Mr. X or Ms. Y. Thanks.

Cash? Not Here
I have been seeing on tv and reading on the internet about places that will NOT accept CASH as a form of payment. If you don't have a credit or debit card then they do not want your business.
Is this discrimination against those that choose not to have a CC or a banking account or the ones that prefer to pay "Cash Only"??
Is this the wave of the future or just a sign of the times? Will there come a time when we no longer have cash in our pockets......We just become a number in order to buy and sell??

Due To Extreme Fuel Prices, I Am No Longer Able To Provide This Service
There have been a number of occasions where bloggers have made comments about the lack of places to recycle in the Portland area. Volunteer Recycling on Morningside Drive takes metals ( and they pay you for them), but I am not aware of any place locally that takes anything other than metal, and Volunteer's hours aren't convenient for everyone, so . . . Starting February 1st, I will start providing a FREE recycling pick-up service to Portland area residents. Yes, FREE! (My payment comes from selling the items in bulk to recycling companies) It is hard, dirty work, with a payoff that has more to do with wanting to "do my part" than it does with money, but I will make enough that I can do it without charging the people who are simply wanting to keep their junk out of the landfills . . . and still make a small profit. I HOPE at some point in the not too distant future that I will be able to provide a "drop-off" location as well, but for now I can only schedule pick-ups.
For more information about what I am offering to pick up, just click on the “continue reading” link below. If you have something that isn't on the list, feel free to call me and I'll see what I can do.

Goodbye Daniel.....
Daniel has been a good friend to me and to this community. Even though our politics differed quite abit, he was always fair in his reporting.
He immediately took an interest in our town and was always there to contribute.
Daniel participated in this blog and always brought some intersting ideas and always he brought his conviction.
This thread would be a good way of saying thanks and good luck to all that he does.
Thank you Daniel and may God bless you,
mike

PBS Television -- Children's Shows

I was in the waiting room of my doctor's office yesterday. The TV was on channel 8 (the local PBS station in Nashville), and a show called "Teletubbies" was on. Three of the telebubbies (see photo) were sitting on stools around a table. Dipsy (the green one) was in front of a control panel with several levers. Here's what happened:
1. Dipsy slowly moved a random lever to a new position.
2. A light beside that lever came on.
3. Dispy put his (her?) hands over his mouth and went "Uh-oh."
4. The other three fell off their stools, and rolled around on the floor laughing.
Having never seen the show before, I figured when Dispy moved another lever, something else would happen. Nope! The same sequence of four events happened over and over and over again. The whole thing repeated about 15 times.
I am not a child any more, but my mind was numb after I watched Dipsy move 15 levers and the exact same things happened over and over. Is this kind of stuff actually good for small children to watch?

Health Dept. Building!?!?
What is the deal with the County or Portland approving the Health Dept. building on Ewing Dr? I'm not quite sure why there building it there but I would hate to still live in South Fork Estates and have to come out and see that sight everyday. I know it's a great cause but I mean.....What gives??
