This week starts the NFL Playoffs! All I've got to say about this is someone please beat those good for nothing Patriots! I've been pulling for the Indianapolis Colts forever, so I'm not going to stop now. I believe that if Jacksonville beats Pittsburgh, and goes on to face the Patriots, all of us will be in for one heck of a game. This would be good for the Colts, but I would love to see what would happen in a rematch between the Patriots and Colts in the AFC Championship. GO COLTS!
Posted by: Jaybird at January 4, 2008 09:20 PM
Well, those sorry Patriots finished 16-0, but need I remind you all how they cheated against the JETS, a team that they could have easily beat in week 1! Still no season is truly an undefeated season unless you win the SUPER BOWL! If New England goes into the Hall of Fame, there needs to be one of these * by the record, and for those of you all who don't know what that is, it's an asterik. It means that the record was tainted due to any type of cheating!

Hey Mack---hehehe...goooooo Tigers
Posted by: Daniel Suddeath at December 1, 2007 08:31 PM
Once again, I'm going to have to totally disagree. Tebow has set records this year and Mizzou is going to lose to Oklahoma Saturday. Florida has lost to Auburn, LSU and Georgia. I don't think Mizzou could beat any of those teams, maybe Auburn. Either way, you can't hold those losses against Tebow. Troy Smith won it last year and he was the same type of qb as Tebow but Tebow's numbers are way better this year.
Posted by: Daniel Suddeath at November 29, 2007 12:39 PM
Good point, portlandmom, I, too have enjoyed watching MIZZOU's success. They are fun to watch.
Moose: As for the Green Bay and Dallas game, if you don't have Directv or Dish, you might try some of the area sports bars/restaraunts. Bob and Rhonda's Steakhouse in White House may have it and is probably your closest option., as should Bailey's and Buffalo Wildwings if you wanted to go to Rivergate. As far as here in Portland, I have no idea. Probably nowhere, unless you wanted to hit Jen's or maybe The Hitching POst....do they show sports? No place in town would be open late enough to finish it anyway.
It's gonna be a great game. Thank God I got NFL Network!
Posted by: Mack at November 28, 2007 09:01 PM
But MIZZOU has a better QB in Chase Daniel. Only reason Tebow is in the running is because of the name of his school. MIZZOU is the perfect story for the year because they were a little school who no one had ever heard of until this year. This goes to show that it doesn't matter how many athletes you have, it's how much heart your athletes have. MIZZOU I know will probably get beat by big name Oklahoma, but this will give the smaller schools like Missouri more attention in peoples eyes.

Where can I catch the Packers/Cowboys game in town, Thursday?
Posted by: Moose at November 26, 2007 09:13 PM
Yes Mack i watched every minute. Another early Christmas present courtesy of the big blue. Just wished we would have shown up to play at the start instead of waiting until the 4th quarter to start playing.
Posted by: Daniel Suddeath at November 26, 2007 09:30 AM
I don't know if Daniel watched or not, but Tennessee beat Kentucky for the TWENTY-THIRD STRAIGHT YEAR. Ya talka a smack, ya getta it backa!!!!
What made it funny was all the students lined up ready to run on the field at the end....I guess they had to climb back to their seats...!
LOL
I also want to go on record as saying.......Tim Tebow BETTER get the Heisman...! AND there is no other conference better or stronger than the SEC!!!
Posted by: Mack at November 25, 2007 12:04 AM
He's a good player on a horrible team. I wish he could have gone somewhere with more established vets around him.
Posted by: Daniel Suddeath at November 15, 2007 11:37 AM
What about our homeboy Corey Brewer
Posted by: FrankS at November 14, 2007 04:57 PM
I know, that's one of the main reasons I hated Tubby. Lofton was a great player, great kid...said he couldn't play d, but I guess he's got the last laugh for now. He's no Allan Houston though...
Posted by: Daniel Suddeath at November 14, 2007 12:20 AM
Daniel...you are right! The Vols would not be the same without former state of Kentucky Mr. Basketball standout Chris Lofton. Thanks to all at the University of Kentucky for not even considering this lifelong Wildcat fan worhthy of attending KY! Now he plays with a chip on his shoulder every time he plays KY!!!!
Next time he is lighting up the Wildcats with 3's and running up and down the court against you guys, just picture him running in slow motion to the tune of "What Might Have Been" by Little Texas!!!
Posted by: Mack at November 13, 2007 09:47 PM

But Tony later came out and said he was forced to move to Tennessee and said Kentucky was his home.
Posted by: Daniel Suddeath at November 13, 2007 02:04 PM
Or Kentucky basketball without a Tennessee boy.Remember Tony Delk?
Posted by: Terry George at November 13, 2007 12:28 PM
You know Mack, if I didn't like you, I'd be cursing you right now. True, it has been a season of rearranged expectations but the only loss they had that got me was against Miss St. But if you were blessed by God to be raised in Kentucky and have been crying since 1984 you would know that 1-11 with a victory over UT is the equal of a BCS birth. By the way, I was three back in 1984, what a great year! And you know as well as I that UT basketball wouldn't be much without a kentucky boy, Mr. Chris Lofton.
Posted by: Daniel Suddeath at November 13, 2007 09:08 AM
Daniel...how quickly you have lowered your expectations! Way back when you were on here saying..."This is the year of KENTUCKY!...National Title!!! Blah, blah, blah!!!!
Now after having been what seems a lifetime ago since KY was ranked in the top 10 (HAHAHAHAHA), you have posted as if KY beating TN (which they very well could) is all it's about....By the way, how old were you in 1984, the LAST TIME KENTUCKY beat UT?
One more thing...can you say GARDNER-WEBB....Wah wah wah....Ya'll ran poor ol' Tubby out of thown for this??
Posted by: Mack at November 12, 2007 08:22 PM
So is everybody in agreement that UK will finally beat UT this year? Good, glad we can all agree on the big blue. They rule!
Posted by: Daniel Suddeath at November 12, 2007 04:44 PM
I totally agree with the comment by Howell Supporter. I think the best thing they could have done was to hire someone outside the Perry regime. Bever is not a people person and he is very arrogant. I'm not sure was he could be arrogant about. Hopefully Mr Gideon, Ms Payne, and the PHS Quarterback Club with soon make changes.

Ok... Football 2007 is over, but thought for the year...... LOSING DOES NOT MAKE ANYONE A LOSER...
Posted by: pantherfaithfan at November 10, 2007 05:28 PM
My vote is to make Coach Childs the new offense
assistant to Coach Bever and move Coach Curry up to the press box to help SPOT..........
Posted by: PROUD PANTHER ALUMNI at November 10, 2007 05:07 PM
Even though I do not have anything personal against Coach Mike Bever, PHS & "JANET GROGAN" screwed up by not hiring (ex-PMS)COACH JACKSON HOWELL.
He is such a class act COACH and the kids loved him and wanted to play for him and work hard for him. He gained their respect and friendship and it was obvious on and off the field. Mike Beaver
is a good family christian person, but, he is not a people person and most of the boys aren't supportive of him (including most of the starters). If you are a panther parent, ask your son how he feels. I personally agree he deserves one more year to change things around, because Portland has the talent, but if 2008 is a repeat of 2006, AND 2007, then things need to be looked at because Portland has the TALENT.....GOOD LUCK PANTHERS IN 2008... "BRING HOWELL BACK"......

Posted by: jj at November 1, 2007 10:36 AM
Dr. jj:
That's right. I said "ain't". As far as my grammer, you failed to recognize the fact that I avoided using a double negative by using the phrase "ain't going anywhere" as opposed to "ain't going nowhere". That should count for something.
Maybe you need to learn how to spell the word "whether"
But thanks for your response. May God bless you in all that you do.
Posted by: J.B.F. at October 31, 2007 11:10 PM
Ok I am going to say it. This may not sound fair, but life isnt fair and most athletics are like this. The reason Coach Bever and his staff are playing the Sophomores and some Freshman is because the staff is building the team around next season and the year after.
Most of the teams in the Region Portland play is plays most seniors and a few juniors. With the experience the team has gained this year will go a long way towards next years team.
Plus there has been a lot of injuries this year. If you follow high school football and know anything about it, you knew that Portland was going to struggle these two years.
I disagree with some of the coaching decisions at times such as play calling and punting the ball on fourth down when down 21 just doesnt make sense.
Posted by: Dave at October 31, 2007 02:54 PM
J.B.F.,
Perhaps you should worry less about football and concentrate on some proper grammer in school instead. I mean,"he ain't going anywhere".
All so consumed by the mighty pigskin, take heed, changes are going to happen wether you want them to or not. This should not be about the coach's, the school or the parents. The kids should be our main concern. The kids should be having the time of thier lives right now. Perhaps we could focus on our kids and the rest will follow. Football is a wonderful program, but there are hundreds of other activities and education that make what we as a society like to call a school.
Posted by: jj at October 31, 2007 01:20 PM
All you trash talkers keep it up. Before long you will be cheering us on again when Bever has us back on the winning track. He's a great coach and he ain't going anywhere.....

Hello Portland Fans! I am a Portland graduate and a very big Portland Football Fan, especially since my son is playing. I am not a person to bad mouth anyone, but it gets harder every week to sit at a game. We are losing very badly, and my son is standing on the sideline. Ok, something has to give. If my son is not the best player, I understand, I like winning too. Obviously, that is not really the issue. The players we have on the field are not winning, in fact, losing very badly. I do not blame the kids so much because they are doing what the coaches are telling them to do, which obviously is not the best thing. Let me ask all of you people who are defending this football coaching staff, does it sound like the best players are playing when my son, among others, have won games in the practices, against the starting team. Also, my son won awards last year and did not play. This year he is one of the upper classman and Freshman and Sophmores are playing above him. That does not seem fair, since as a freshman himself, he played both sides of the ball and did very well. Now he is on the sidelines while the crew that is playing is getting their bottoms handed to them!

Dang't mack, now you've crossed the line...
Why did Phillip Fulmer get his qb's, running backs and wide receivers to work at a bakery last summer? To get used to turnovers.
What's the difference between a porcupine and Neyland Stadium? A porcupine has 108,000 pricks on the outside...
Just funnin with you Mack. You'll get to talk a lot of smack this year in basketball. UT will be ranked top five in the nation preseason...come on...let me have a moment in the sun before florida stomps us tomorrow...
Posted by: Daniel Suddeath at October 19, 2007 02:36 PM
Okay Daniel, since you decided to go that route....
You can talk all the smack you want. But it is the FIRST time since you have been born that you have been able to. Kentucky traditionally SUCKS in football, and hate the Vols all you want, and you may beat us this year, BUT remember...in case KY beats TN this year...
A child was born, went to pre-school, went to Kindergarten, went to middle school, graduated high school, graduated college, got a job, and started a family, in the time it took Kentucky to beat Tennessee JUST ONCE!!!!!!!!!
HAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA!
I don't care who you are, it is pretty pathetic to lose to the same team for over two decades..
And to think, I was going to get on here and compliment you on possibly one of your best (and most true) editorials ever in this week's Progressive....

Posted by: Daniel Suddeath at October 18, 2007 01:19 PM
I graduated in May 2007 from PHS. While in high school, I attended every football game, almost every basketball game, many baseball games, and lots of other sporting events. I went regardless of if the games were home or away, and I was a proud member of Panther Nation. II think that school spirit is very important, and now that I am in college I miss the Panther Nation spirit because it isn't the same here. With the new coaching staff at PHS, it has become almost unbearable to watch any Panther football. (For me, anyway.) It makes it even more unbearable to know that players have quit the team because they were not played, especially seniors. I'm sorry, but if you have seniors who can play and are able to play and your younger players obviously are not getting the job done and bringing home a "W", it's not that hard to figure out something is wrong. While I was not really a fan of Perry as a teacher or a person, I think he could actually coach enough to win. If you can't win games, you figure it out. I don't want to bash anyone, but you can't keep praising the coaching staff and patting them on the back. "Good game" doesn't cut it. The players do deserve some credit. They do the best they can with the direction they have been given. At least they still have some ounce of pride left to run out on to the football field. I am a true fan of the Panthers, but eventually it becomes a little ridiculous. Last year, people said "Oh, it's a building year. They will get better." That was a year ago, and we still have yet to make vast improvement. Hmm. Think about it.
Posted by: Panther Pride at October 17, 2007 09:55 AM
Mack, it's not that I hate the Vols, I despise them, lol. I'm going to the Florida/Kentucky game this weekend, if they win that, then they'll be for real, but I'm still holding my breath. Regardless, the SEC is stacked top to bottom. No team from the big ten or big east could play in our conference year in and year out and enjoy the same record because even the Ole Miss's and Vandys can beat you on any given Saturday.
Posted by: Daniel Suddeath at October 16, 2007 09:12 AM
Daniel...I disagree. He has an arm, just doesn't have great aim. Who knows maybe they will work on it. Regardless that's my team, and has been ever since they moved here.
As far as your Wildcats, I am very happy for them, and excited to see them doing as well as they are. I know you hate my Vols, but I hold no such hate for your Cats. I am glad to see someone other than the usual teams making a run for the SEC. And I said it before, this may be the year, or at least it should be, that they finally beat Tennessee and end the streak....
Anyway, I want all the teams in the SEC to be ranked...makes it look better on our conference, which is by far the strongest in the country....
Posted by: Mack at October 15, 2007 11:00 PM
Mack-they're 0-5 now but they will end up the same as the Titans-out of the playoffs. I'm not sure Vince Young will cut it as an NFL qb because he has no arm.
While the Dolphins aren't any good, how about my Wildcats...Go big blue

THE ONE AREA I HAVE HEARD MORE COMPLAINTS ABOUT, IS OUR OFFENSIVE CALLING, AND EVEN WE ILLITERATE FOOTBALL MOMS CAN TELL THAT WE NEED TO OPEN OUR OFFENSE UP.. WE HAVE RECEIVERS THAT CAN CATCH THE FOOTBALL (EVEN WITH A CAST ON) THAT ARE NOT EVEN BEING USED, AND AS MUCH AS I LOVE #2, HE IS NOT THE ONLY CAPABLE PLAYER ON MAKING SOMETHING HAPPEN...#20 HAS HAD SEVERAL GREAT RUNS
THESE PAST COUPLE OF WEEKS AND "RUNS HARD" EVERY PLAY.. #6,#9, #17, #4, #8, #28 #21, I COULD GO ON AND ON, HAVE ALL PLAYED RECEIVERS, (EVEN IN A CAST- HAVE NEWSPAPER CLIPPING TO PROVE IT), AND WERE VERY GOOD, OR AT LEAST HOWELL SAW IT, AND COACH HICKS...SO, MY HOPE IS THAT EVERY PLAYER ON THE TEAM RETURNING, WORKS VERY HARD IN OFF SEASON AND THAT THEY COME BACK NEXT YEAR AND WIN SOME GAMES. OUR COACHES DESERVE
ANOTHER YEAR ALSO, BECAUSE THEY ARE ALL ABOUT THIS TEAM AND THEY LOVE THEIR PANTHERS AND THEY WILL TURN THINGS AROUND NEXT YEAR AND THE NEXT.............

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.... THERE ARE 3 GAMES LEFT IN THE 2007 SEASON, AND YES, EVERYBODY IS DISAPPOINTED AND AGGRAVATED....BUT, AS A PROUD MOM OF ONE OF THE SOPHOMORES THAT PLAYS BOTH SIDES OF THE GAME, WE NEED TO BE ENCOURAGING NOT
DISCOURAGING THIS COACHING STAFF AND THE PLAYERS RETURNING....I HATE IT SO MUCH FOR THE SRS. THAT HAVE HUNG IN THERE AND PLAYED THEIR HEARTS OUT, AND MORE SO FOR DAVID S. AND JACOB G. WHO HAD THEIR FOOTBALL CAREERS ENDED SO EARLY IN THE SEASON....THEY HAVE BOTH BEEN MISSED ON THE FIELD....COACH PERRY WAS AN AWESOME COACH AND NOTHING IS TO BE
TAKEN AWAY FROM HIM OR HIS STAFF, BUT, HE SAW WHAT WAS COMING AND HE KNEW IT WAS GOING TO BE A LONG DROUGHT IN P'LAND FB WINS..I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SPEAK TO HIM AFTER THE GAME WHEN WE PLAYED MJ, AND HE HAD NOTHING BUT PRAISE FOR OUR RETURNING JRS AND SOPH CLASSES...MY SON PUTS ME IN MY PLACE AFTER EVERY GAME, BECAUSE I TOO GET SO FRUSTRATED WITH OUR O F F E N S E .... HIS ATTITUDE IS WE JUST HAVE TO KEEP WORKING AND GROW.. HE IS NOW SIDELINED FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON DUE TO AN INJURY, BUT HE HAS MAINTAINED A GOOD ATTITUDE AND JUST WANTS TO FOCUS NOW ON GETTING BIGGER AND STRONGER FOR NEXT YEAR.. AND THAT SEEMS TO BE THE ATTITUDE OF MOST OF THE RETURNING PLAYERS.. THE BEST THING WE CAN DO THIS LATE IN THE SEASON IS ENCOURAGE THESE
YOUNG MEN TO STAY TOGETHER AND WORK HARD OFFSEASON AND COME BACK NEXT YEAR AND PRAY WE DON'T HAVE ANYMORE INJURIES. YES, OUR COACHING STAFF IS YOUNG, BUT THEY ARE TOTALLY COMMITTED TO THESE YOUNG MEN AND WANT TO WIN JUST AS MUCH AS EVERYBODY ELSE DOES.. I ENCOURAGE YOU, IF YOU ARE A "TRUE PANTHER FAN AND ALUMNI", TO COME OUT THESE LAST 3 HOME GAMES AND "SUPPORT YOUR PANTHERS"...

I don't comment on sports because I don't know one thing about them...but I just read the post about the "too many men on the field" penalty...
what does that mean ?? Don't they know how many men they are supposed to have on the field at any one time so as not to get a penalty for that ??
How does that happen ?
Posted by: DeeAnna at October 14, 2007 09:58 AM
This past week, White House Middle School beat Portland Middle 44-0, and Portland High lost to Clarksville 35-7 tonight.
I listened to the PHS game for about 20 minutes tonight, and heard in that short span of time that PHS got two "Too many Men on the field" penalties called, in which there were 12 men on the field. Hmm.
Also, seems that Daniel isn't mentioning his Dolphins. They are 0-4.
Posted by: Mack at October 12, 2007 11:53 PM
This is great, a typical sports debate that everyone has from time to time.
I don't mean to keep hammering Perry down everyones throat, but if he were still here, do you think we would have the situation we have right now?
The only reason I say this again, is because I think these kids deserve the best that is available, I just don't think they got the best available. Bever is horrible with regard to offense....same two or three plays over and over and over....run to the right..run to the left....run to the right....you don't score points by running to the sidelines.....you gotta get the ball down the field.
Coaches make much more of a difference in many different situations, not just when your behind by more than a touchdown or two.
The difference between a good coach and poor coach can keep your kids from getting down by more than 2 touchdowns. A good coach will have you prepared for the game in many different aspects of the game. A good coach can adjust on the fly when needed and try to keep you in the game both physically and mentally.
You'll never win every game, but a good coach will certainly increase your chances even when the player numbers are down or there's a lack of experience.
I have two other questions that come to mind.....why are the player numbers down?
And why since we are loosing every game anyway, aren't all the players getting playing time...seems to me there is nothing more to loose at this point, so lets play everyone.
Posted by: JW at October 12, 2007 09:57 AM
I know he doesn't care When his birthday is, that was not the point. Bever finally let him play in the last game against Beech last year, just for a few plays. He was in on every tackle, which makes a person wonder, if he had let boys like him play more, maybe the outcome would have been different. This is exactly what we have been saying all along, he has been playing the same players all year, just like last year and still no wins. Why wait till the last couple minutes of a blow out game to let the other guys play, maybe they will show him something that they have not shown in practice. If you leave them standing on the sidelines the whole season you will never know what they can do. And Frank, I'll be sure to tell my son what you said about him. That was real ugly.
Posted by: fred at October 11, 2007 02:36 PM
Do you think Bever cares when your sons birthday is?I seriously doubt it and Daniel you make a great point. He is playing the guys that he believes can help him win. I guess your son doesnt fit that.
Posted by: frank at October 11, 2007 11:21 AM
Oh, by the way Frank, 18 year olds are not allowed to play if their birthday falls past a certain date, I forget the exact date. Now my stepson turned 18 this past January so coach let him stand on the sidelines all of last season, wasn't that nice of him?
Posted by: fred at October 11, 2007 05:27 AM
I think Phillip Fulmer might be available after this year :)
Posted by: Daniel Suddeath at October 10, 2007 12:41 PM
I liked Howell, I think he would have been a good choice.
Posted by: fred at October 10, 2007 11:57 AM
Okay would someone please name the notable coaches that applied for the job. There really wasnt one. Maybe the coach from Henry County, but thats it. Im not saying the hiring of Bever was a good one, but who else would you have hired. How about Jackson Howell, oh wait thats who I liked. But the rumors of Gary Rankin and some other high profile coaches applied are just false and rumors that people started.
I think for it to get any better is to get rid of the entire Perry regime, I believe thats what most fans want.
Posted by: Frank at October 10, 2007 11:22 AM
If his job depends on wins.......... Where does that put him after 14 straight losses? Where do you draw the line? what's the limit before changes have to be made? It's my understanding that some very notable coaches applied for this position way back when. I cannot agree with all your theory Daniel, the first half yes, the second half no. Untill you have a son on the team, you won't understand the frustration of watching him stand on the sidelines, being bad mouthed by these young wannabe coaches, after playing the past two years, both sides of the ball. This year he is left to stand and watch the team lose week after week because someone thinks he "knows what's best for the team". If we had all the players that have left the team in the last two years, things would be different, they certainly can't get any worse. We should have won at least 4 of the 6 games this year, mainly mistakes on the field was the cause. Proper coaching can reduce these mistakes enough to those wins to be in our column.
Posted by: fred at October 10, 2007 05:22 AM
I'm sorry guys, I love all of you, but Bill Parcels couldn't make this team a winner. You can't win a race with ponies when you're going against horses. The star receiver from Kenwood the other night was bigger than most of our linemen. This team is still young and has no qb. Next year, maybe 4-6, but it will be awhile before they can compete with the gallatins, mt. juliet's and clarksville teams of the world. you're talking about schools that have a plethora of talent to chose from. we're too slow. I'll give you that sometimes, our team doesn't look the most prepared. But coaches make the difference in games that are decided by a touchdown or two, not when your getting beat by 35 plus points every week. Not when your players are getting hurt each week from hard hits. 90 percent of any sport is talent, and we have players with heart, but not much else. Hate the coach if you want, but what would you do different? Do you think Beaver sees the bench players playing like all-stars in practice and says hey, I think I'll stick with my starters, I like losing. No way, no how. Remember, his job depends on wins, not whose parents are happy.
Posted by: Daniel Suddeath at October 10, 2007 01:24 AM
To the person that blamed the losing on the fact that they are the smallest school in 4A, well, so was WH when they were in 4A those 4 years, but they (WH) made it to the semi-finals in 2004, and the other 3 years, they made it to the playoffs, despite having the smallest enrollment in the 4A those four years. In fact, the year WH was first moved into 4A, they split the Robertson County WH kids, and took over 200 kids out of their enrollment.
All in all, WH was successful those four years...Portland, you can't blame the school size...

Frank,
I'm not going to get in to insults, such as accusing you of not knowing or understanding football.....
I spent 20 years doing play by play broadcasts of football abd basketball on the radio so lets just establish that right off the bat here. I believe I understand better than many do.
Are you saying if Perry were still the coach, this team would still have the poor record it does? I seriously doubt that.
The problem with this team is poor coaching...it is obvious.
I think it is unfair to the kids who put thier blood, sweat and tears in to this team to have a less than adequate coaching staff. These kids do work hard, in 100 degree heat and they are sold short by a coach with little to no offensive knowledge who continues to run the same 3 plays over and over and over.
These kids will go through the rest of thier life with the memories made right now. When they look back on these years, I am sure they will wonder what could have been, if they would have had a more knnowledgable Coach, and as a team had some success.
Not one post that I have seen has blamed the kids for anything. This falls at the doorstep of the head coach. These kids will only play to the level that thier coach expects of them and drives them to do.
I don't buy the whole arguement that most of the kids are only Sophomores etc..., in 1980 in the state of Illinois, there was a high school football team who won the state title and was ranked 5th in the nation. They won state by a 40 to nothing score. Guess what.......the majority of this team was Freshman...FRESHMAN! How do I know this....because I was on that team!!!
We were not the most talented team around....but our Coach made us believe we were and he played us like we were, he was our weekly injection of confidence. If he didn't have confidence, we would not have.
The problem with Portland is not the kids.....it is the coach. Sorry, but reality bites! These kids have been sold short by poor coaching and it is time to move on.

Frank, You did not answer the question, what facts did we have wrong? the answer is none. If anything, what you first posted sounded as if you are blaming the sophomores for the losses. I did'nt know Perry and don't care about Perry. I have watched the games since the start of last season as well as the practices and scrimmages. I see coaches who are all very young, no depth, no leadership within the coaching staff, no offense, it just is not their. When the coaches are playing at practice or standing around doing nothing, and kids on the sidelines doing nothing when they should have them practicing in small groups they are showing their lack of experience. In the past two years, they have run off enough juniors and seniors to make a team. We had the chance to win at least 4 of the 6 games this year with thoses sophomores playing. If this coaching staff does not like the player they encourage them to quit. And by the way, these are all facts also. Do you have a son on the team Frank?

When Perry was the coach they were playing as a 3A school. They were one of the biggest 3A schools in the state. They played teams in those years that were 1A schools, but teams like Cannon County, Dekalb County, Trousdale County, York, and a few others didnt want to play the private schools, so they asked to play in 3A. THey wanted to play small town schools like Portland, White House, and Smith County. If they didnt move up a classification they would have played Goodpasture, David Lipscomb, etc.
Now they are playing Clarksville, Mt Juliet, Kenwood, Beech, Rossview, Springfield, and CLarksville NW.
Now Perry was a heck of a coach and im not taking anything away from him, but these coaches are trying to make best with the talent they have. There is a lot of kids at the high school that are too lazy to play football or maybe they have to get a job instead of playing. When Perry was coaching he was playing seniors and juniors not sophomores.
If you cant grasp this, I guess you dont understand football.

No one is blaming the kids for anything......BUT this is football in the south, it is a big deal for many.
The kids only play to the level by which they are trained and coached.
I just can't get beyond this one fact.....
With Perry as Coach, Portland was in the hunt nearly every year.....People feared the Portland Panthers.
Since the new Coach took over......14 losses out of 16 games? Come on, it does not take a rocket scientist to figure this one out!!!
Seems to me the problem is not the kids or thier ages.
I don't think the schedule is that different than before.....its not like were playing any state champs on our schedule.

What facts are not straight?
Posted by: fred at October 8, 2007 01:33 PM
Guys lay off this coaching staff, they have 7 sophomores starting on offense and defense. Their starting qb may never play a game again. Lets see there are basically 15 yr old kids playing the other teams 17 and 18 yr olds. One other fact Portland is one of the smallest 4A schools in the state because of this senior or junior class which moved them to another classification. So please get your facts straight.

Two, the first two games of last season. Greenwood and Clarksville Northwest. Nothing since. We are 2-14 so far under the new coaching staff.

I just want to insert one question here with regard to Portland HS Football team...
How many games has Portland won since Perry left?
Posted by: JW at October 8, 2007 08:20 AM
Mack, It's my understanding that the dude from Studio 16A made those shirts. I see in the paper where he is back in business here in town. In the article he talks about all the people who are so glad to see him back in Portland, but what I've been told by way too many is a lot of bad dealings with them. Didn't he used to have a store in WH also?
Posted by: fred at October 8, 2007 05:55 AM
Barney---No qb? We have Woodson who will be a top 10 pick, even though he didn't play like one against South Carolina. I do sense a lot of angst coming from Vandy and UT fans in the area though whose teams are mediocre, at best, though UT did get a pretty good win yesterday. At UK, we care mainly about basketball, football is just a way to pass the time until the real sport begins, but for the record, we'll beat Vandy easy this year and should take care of UT cos they're not much(other than criminals):).

I agree with you Mack about the T-Shirt issue, that was childish. It's a shame that so much negativity comes out when a team has a bad season, these kids hurt enough after every game and the out cry afterwards I'm sure hurts twice as much.

Well lets see, last week Portland was held to FOUR YARDS TOTAL OFFENSE by Station Camp, this week, at Kenwood, it was something like 57. That's not good. It's amazing that after such a good start at WH, it has all been downhill. However, I believe if PHS played WH now, the score would be much different. WH is starting to roll.
I will say this, the Portland papers, and all the community folk seem to act like the WH game is THE only game every year, like all they want to do is win the WH game. Well, that's stupid..outside of bragging rights, the WH game has NO BEARING. They aren't in the same region, and so what. This town is so pathetic, that they all showed up last year wearing a very juvenile shirt that said "WHITE HOUSE SUCKS" on it. And I am not just talking kids. I saw full grown men and women wearing that crap. This just shows the intelligence level of many here. It is a school for crying out loud, and these are KIDS playing a game....
Seems to me like a little bit of karma...."WHITE HOUSE SUCKS"? Not quite. Maybe it's time to print NEW shirts with a NEW saying....just insert PORTLAND.....

I can't believe no one has had any comments on the high school football teams progress in the past two weeks. A 38-6 loss last week and a 47-6 loss last night. 14 straight losses and the same kids still standing on the side lines.

HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!
GATORS LOSE!
No championship this year!!!!
Way to go Auburn!!!

Who has UK beat this year? Oh they beat an awful Louisville team that was overated. Oh That Arkansas team is just great. They have two good backs, but no defense and no qb. Maybe when UK beats someone, I will respect them.

How's everyone feel about Portland's chances this week with Station Camp? Will we pick up our first win?
I don't know what's wrong with us this year. I hope they turn it around and turn it around quick.

Daniel.....Titans would eat your one year wonder Wildcats for lunch homey...Funny you didn't mention your 0-3 DOLPHINS!!!!...LOL
Posted by: Murray at September 27, 2007 01:30 AM
I think the Titans are doing just fine without Pacman, actually I think they are focusing better on the task at hand and not having to worry about all the negative publicity. I am proud of the game they played last week against the Colts, would of like to had a "W" but they played a GREAT game.
Posted by: Judy at September 24, 2007 02:15 PM
I say Kentucky is going all the way this year and they could beat the titans an ole wounded duck Young.
Posted by: Daniel Suddeath at September 24, 2007 01:38 PM
i believe unbeaten station camp is where portland is off to next.from what ive heard, they got the best defense in the region.the beaver better come up with somewhat of a strategy to actually play football this weekend.coach perry could have easily scored another 20 or so points friday.
Posted by: digman at September 24, 2007 12:34 PM
I think they are doing just fine. I miss watching him return punts, but as far as the secondary is concerned, the new free agents and our young guys are doing just fine.
Some on the inside say that one reason the defense is so much better is because he isn't there causing division in the locker room.
All in all, I think they are going in the right direction....at least they are competing again!!!
Posted by: Murray at September 24, 2007 11:54 AM
I don't go to many of the Portland games, I work late Friday nights and so my schedule interfers, but I was curious to see how everyone thought the Titans were doing this year without Pacman?
Posted by: Jessica Escue at September 24, 2007 09:08 AM
In my book, 42-0 is a beating.
Posted by: fred at September 24, 2007 05:06 AM
How about the Friday night game? PHS could have really taken Beating. But Perry played easy on us.
