CITY of Portland WATER RESTRICTIONS as of 8/13/07

The following Bulletin was taken from the City of Portland Web Site

August 13, 2007

City of Portland Water System
Water Conservation Measures

Due to the extended drought conditions in our area and extremely hot weather, there is an increased need for water. Because of these conditions, and the need to conserve as much of our water supply as reasonably possible, effective immediately, the City of Portland will impose restrictions on all non-essential use of water, as follows:

1. No washing of sidewalks, driveways, parking areas, patios, or other exterior paved areas, except by the City of Portland for safety reasons;
2. No filling or re-filling of swimming pools;
3. No non-commercial washing of privately owned motor vehicles, boats, campers and trailers;
4. No use of water from a fire hydrant except for fighting fires, or use by the City of Portland for safety reasons;
5. No watering of lawns, landscaped areas, or ball fields – EXCEPT that of food gardens, trees, shrubs or other plants which may be watered between the hours of 8 PM and 6 AM to sustain the plant life, but only with the use of hand held mechanisms, buckets or other similar devices; and
6. No watering for dust control unless ordered by the City of Portland for safety reasons.

These restrictions are not imposed upon Commercial users at this time.

These restrictions will be enforced until further notice.

Brian Goodwin, Public Works Superintendent, said that our water supply levels are getting low and until there is substantial rainfall in the area, this conservation measure will be mandatory.

It is in everyone’s best interest to conserve as much water as possible. Your cooperation will be very much appreciated.

the only reason that the council and mayor decided to stop the sale of our city water to the pipeline DEstuction co. is that some light was shed on the subject.is there really anybody out there that actually believes that there wern't some backdoor deals made to profit a few? if not, this would never have been successful. macdonald,gordon and our mayor should be forced from office, but sadly enough they will probably be re-elected by uninformed voters.wake up citizens, these people screwed us over. vote 'em out!

I sent this e-mail to the Mayor and Council Members....

Dear Mayor and City Council Members – as a citizen of Portland I am compelled to express my sentiments in regard to the current water restrictions…..

In light of the recent news about selling water to the construction company for the gas pipeline, I am extremely resentful of this action. I have invested money into my lawn and garden, i.e. trees, vegetables, flowers, shrubs, etc. and have been asked to curb my water usage. Now I find out that a “for profit” company is buying “my” water to keep down dust, something that I am not allowed to do – please tell me what is not right about this picture???

I, personally, feel that commercial companies should be restricted before citizens….seems to me that things are backwards….

was the same memo sent to the bank on the corner that waters the street next to their lawn? LOL

All the schools have had a memo sent to them instructing them not to water the ball fields. If you continue to see this, call city hall and report it.

Regarding #5 above, no watering of Ball Fields. I guess that doesn't include the soccer field by the high school. The sprinklers were going at 7:15 this morning.

Debra,
I'm working on a story about the water shortages on News 2. If you read this Tuesday and would like to talk with me about how you're conserving and catching water, I'd love to talk with you.

I knew the water levels had to be getting low. I been having to add water every week to my Koi pond.
To conserve I have been catching the water from my central air unit. I have enough everyday to water my flowers. This works with a window unit also. Just place a bucket under it.

I guess it was bound to happen, I'm all for supporting this decision!
