What do you want to be when you grow up?

Remember this question? This is probably the most common question asked of youngsters. If you think about it, this is not only the most common question, but also one of the most important. Proverbs tells us to "train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is older, he will not depart from it." We too often attribute this verse to strictly a spiritual connotation. Although that is part of the meaning, if you look at the original context, you can also say, "train up a child in the way he is bent..."

How were you wired in your younger years. Discover that and you will be well on your way to living a life where your work is also your pasttime. Think of your current situation. Is this what your ambition was when you were a kid? If not, why not?

My son Jack is seven and since he was two, you could ask him what he wanted to be when he grows up. His first response to this day is "I want to be an ice cream truck driver." He's been consistent with that for over five years. Now, he has added some things to that like; fireman, police officer, doctor, being in the military, but his first ambition has always been to be an ice cream truck driver.

My wife stopped the ice cream truck as it strolled through our neighborhood last week and began inquiring about how to get started. You can rent the truck for $10 a day. That's $10 a day. You can bet that, if not this summer certainly the next, you will see myself or my wife driving our son around and he will be living his life's dream.

Now, will he be doing that as a career? Probably not, but, if you notice the other things he would like to be, you will see that these are service oriented careers. You can bet that I will be resourcing my son with all the tools I can that will help him to engage in a life of service to others. You see, that's the way he is bent. I believe, this is his calling.

As a society we have seen a transition from "what do we want to be" to "what are we going to do". This focus on what we do rather than who we are is what keeps us feeling trapped. Discover your dream. Ask yourself again, "what do I want to be when I grow up?"

What are your thoughts on your work?

Live your dream.

Yes Judy- I have been and plan to continue reading other areas of this blog.

Career coaching is not something I do but is something I have researched as well as many other businesses over the years.

I do a lot of research online studying successful entrepreneurs. There is no better way to learn than to learn from someone who is winning at what they do.

According to Rick’s registration on godaddy.com it looks like he is new to this. New ventures need motivation and encouragement. It looks like he is attempting to do something positive.

I wish Rick luck in his venture! Keep it up!

DCA: - Thanks for your reply about being on the Do Not call list. I hope as you find your comfort level on the blog you will participate in other topics as well, not everyone's opinion agrees with our own personal ways of thinking and believe it or not we do learn things from this blog quite often!

PS: Just read your new post below, sounds like Career Coaching isn't new to you after all!

$399.00 for 3 months of coaching? That is a great deal..

Most career coaches I know charge $499.00 an hour.

I think the free offer I read was out of good gesture because he was getting slammed for having his e-mail address on his post.

Posted by: DCA at July 12, 2007 01:36 PM

DCA -- I believe he's advertising/promoting his business, because he said in one of his very first posts : "if you mention the blog" - I'll see you for free and get you on a plan", etc.
If I don't mention the blog......then, apparently, there's a fee for his services.

I would not have felt negatively about what he is doing if he had simply signed his postings, with just "Rick". When he put his slogans and web domain, it became a blog advertisment for his services, which I thought was not allowed on this blog.

This is my last comment about "Rick the FreedomCoach" here. ( I can hear the applause..LOL )

No, you did not silence me....I am just tired of talking about him.

Thanks, Judy for what you said.

I just revisited Rick's freedomcoach website.
It appears to of been updated since the other day, for anyone interested 3 months of coaching is $399.00

Judy,

I am on the do not call list.

The do not call list is similar to your choice on a blog to respond to posts... which I have chosen in the past not to do.

I am considered new because I have never posted. I am very familiar with you all... I read you everyday!

Rick provides something I am interested in. That is why I am posting.

Again, if you are not interested in what Rick is saying or doing there are other things on this blog to read…..

Posted by: DCA at July 12, 2007 01:14 PM

DCA: - New faces on the blog are a great thing, but, I find your personal attack towards DeeAnna just a tad out of line for someone who has never posted before because all they've ever read was garbage and negativity. I'm sorry if you feel people like us/me/DeeAnna, and anyone else that has/had an opinion you don't agree with isn't worth your time, we too have the same freedom of speech you have!

PS: Just my opinion.... Rick's post would of had more value without the email post which included his web domain. People get tired of having businesses pitched at them every time you turn around, that's why there's a do not call list, are you on it?

Happy Posting

Why do you think his sole purpose is to promote his business....

Did you not like the post? I did.

It sounded to me like free content. If you choose to contact him, you should. If you keep with your opinion then don't.

In the mean time just enjoy the posts...

He put is e-mail at the bottom... Big deal! That is not a very strong marketing strategy...

Posted by: DCA at July 12, 2007 12:36 PM

DCA -- I am not the person who commented on the "new" people.

As to having new people here..of course that's great. I just don't think they should come here with the sole purpose of introducing their business plan, that's all...and that seems to be the case.

As to you thinking my comments are garbage and negative...that's fine. I do feel very negative about someone using the blog to generate business for themselves.

Posted by: DeeAnna at July 12, 2007 12:05 PM

DeAnna,

You are right, several new people on the blog.... That is good right.

I have been here several times, live in Portland, and have never had reason to comment. All I read was a bunch of garbage and negativity from people like you... and a lot from you.

Their is a brighter side to life and it looks like that is where Rick guides people!

Posted by: DCA at July 12, 2007 09:25 AM

Charlie - I did go to his website. It offers much the same text as he's posting here. He is simply getting free exposure on the blog for his site.
I did go to godaddy.com and found out his name.
I only wonder why he dosen't put his name on his own blog ? That would make him more credible, it seems to me. I would be proud to let people know who I was if I could help them do all he says he can do for people.

There is evidently a charge for his services, because he said...if anyone contacts him and mentions the blog, he will see them for free and get them on a "plan" , etc.

If the next person comes along and writes big long lengthy articles about health, for example, and then signs off with Jane@healthyliving.org and says..contact me and I will give you free samples to get you on a plan....is that going to be ok, too ??

Just wondering.

Posted by: DeeAnna at July 12, 2007 12:05 AM

As the blog administrator, I have been asked to express my opinion about this post. I would like to point out a couple of things:

First, anyone can find out who owns the domain freedomcoach.org. (It's public information.) Just go to www.godaddy.com and click on "whois" near the bottom of the page. This will (after a screen or two) tell you the name, address and phone number of the person who has the domain name.

Second, I think the controversy is kind of interesting. It is adding a little interest to the blog during a particularly slow news period. Anyway, that's just my opinion.

Third, I would like to see where all of this leads. I would hope that someone actually contacts Rick and finds out what kind of services he offers (and if there is a cost). That would be interesting to know. (To be honest, at this point in time, I have no idea if Rick is starting a business or opening a new church!)

Thanks for reading and participating in the Portland blog.

Come on Jazzy3, this guy is changing peoples lives! He has already enlightened at least one person enough to make some sweeping changes.

Quoted from the "Who's Controlling You?" thread:

"Rick - Great post! I'm definitely motivated to make some changes that will benefit my family, community and church versus just filling my boss's pockets. I never thought slavery was a good thing."

Funny, as soon as Rick posted there are "new" people here defending him...hmmmmmm

I did not confuse anything. Here is the definition of the word "advertise" from the dictionary.

Main Entry: ad·ver·tise
Function: verb
Pronunciation: 'ad-v&r-"tīz
Inflected Form(s): -tised ; -tis·ing
Etymology: Middle English, from Middle French advertiss-, stem of advertir
transitive senses
1 : to make something known to : NOTIFY
2 a : to make publicly and generally known b : to announce publicly especially by a printed notice or a broadcast c : to call public attention to especially by emphasizing desirable qualities so as to arouse a desire to buy or patronize : PROMOTE

Posted by: DeeAnna at July 11, 2007 11:36 AM

By the way, allow me to PROMOTE my FREE blog.

http://blog.mycrappycommute.net

Is this ok, DeeAnna?? :)

Posted by: Michael at July 11, 2007 10:46 AM

DeeAnna,
Since you quoted rule 4 in one of your comments, I'm assuming, you too have read it. But apparently, you seem to confuse the word promote and the word advertise. The rule, as you quoted it, says no advertising. It makes no mention of promoting. I hope, for your sake, if you run a business that you learn the difference. Rick is not "advertising" his business on this blog. He provided some high quality free content to this blog, which frankly, lends some quality to the blog. I mean, don't get me wrong, I like to read 37 whining posts about dry hamburgers on the square as much as the next guy. But it is nice to have some some quality on the blog.

Judy, thanks. I haven't ever been to the blog. However this is very entertaining.

Rick, don't listen to these people. Most of the time those who are the loudest are the..well... you know the rest.

All I am hearing is a barking chiwawa...

The man wrote a nice post and I can say it got me thinking...

At the bottom he included an e-mail address and before that he stated "What are your thoughts on your work?" "You can contact me at….."

DeeAnna it is obvious that you do not want to contact him. For anyone else... you have a choice.

Leave it at that.

Good stuff Rick! Keep posting and I will keep reading....

Posted by: DCA at July 11, 2007 10:17 AM

Michael, you evidently haven't read the Blog Rules. It specifically asks that you do not use the blog to promote your business.

Michelle, you are so right. Too many unanswered questions.

FreedomCoach must think we are all very gullible people to think that by offering the writings from his blog, with no identity given whatsoever,no credentials, that we are going to contact him to discuss our life !

Anyone can write a blog on the internet, get " .org " after their name and use the name of God to lend an air of credibility to themselves.

I went to his website ... he gives no more info about himself there, either !

I don't understand why the administrators of the blog are allowing him to continue to do this.

Posted by: DeeAnna at July 11, 2007 09:26 AM

My intent was not criticism, I was just saying that it was nice to see a post that wasn't griping and moaning about something for a change! I, for one, see no reason why someone can't use this blog to promote their business/views/whatever. My reply was in direct reply to DeAnna's first post!

Posted by: MDL at July 11, 2007 05:24 AM

I just wanted to say a few things about what everyone is talking about on this thread.

1- I don't have a problem with the context of Rick's thread, using the business name in the signing I feel is wrong. This reminds me of when I used e-B_y to supplement my home based business, always had to mention in the listing, "If you have any questions please feel free to contact me Judy@xyz.com" a great way to get around not advertising your business in your listings which is against their rules.

2- Anyone can go to Namesecure.com and type a web name in the box to register a web address, If the name is already taken click on the link for whois, as long as they completed the necessary information you can find out most of the information you are searching for that may answer some of your concerns. (full name, address, phone, date that web name was purchased, etc.)

DeeAnna - No offense taken on my part, thanks for pointing out Note 4 from the blog rules.

Michael & DCA - Welcome to the Blog, haven't seen your posts before.

Happy Posting

DCA,
As you suggested I went to his website. Does not give a last name, where he is located or a phone number. If he is legit all the above should be included on his site.
Sorry, I'm not buying.

Posted by: DebraP at July 10, 2007 06:40 PM

Copied from the Rules of the Blog ---on the first page of the website:

Note 4: Please do not use the blog to advertise your business.

Honestly, I don't care. I just thought he was advertising for his Life Coaching...and I still do. He did say..."mention the blog" and he will see you free".....

I just thought that was against the rules.

Sorry I have offended everyone apparently.

I hope the whole blog turns into one giant advertisement for business...it really should be open to everyone to do the same in that case.

Posted by: DeeAnna at July 10, 2007 04:33 PM

If you want to know about the guy just look at his e-mail... rick@freedomcoach.org.

I went to www.freedomcoach.org and learned a little about him.

Before you say anything else, do the same!

Posted by: DCA at July 10, 2007 03:54 PM

Michelle,
That's the first legitimate comment I've read on this blog. Thanks for the dose of sanity. I couldn't agree more.

Posted by: Michael at July 10, 2007 03:40 PM

I think anyone criticizing a man who is promoting his business is completely ignorant of how to start and run a profitable business. The life blood of a small business is promotion and marketing. This blog is a GREAT place to market a business, as is writing a column in the local newspaper. The life blood of a town is people like Rick who own profitable small businesses. So with that said, support Rick and other local small businesses. If you like paved roads and schools with a/c support your local entrepreneurs. Don't dog them out for including a simple email address.

However, I will say this: Judging by the anger and negativity displayed here on this blog, Rick, I'd say your life coaching business has plenty of potential clients!!

Posted by: Michael at July 10, 2007 03:27 PM

I am not as concerned about a business pitch as I am that someone just pops up "out of the blue" and starts encouraging people to contact and meet with him. Who is this person? Why would we trust this person? Personally, I warn my children every single time they log-on to the web that this is exactly the type of person to avoid. He could be anyone! If he is legitimate, then why not tell us his entire name?

Does he have a business license? Is he even IN Portland? What are his qualifications? Does he have a professional license registered with the State of Tennessee? Too many unanswered questions for me. So, I think I will pass on the offer to meet and I would warn others against it until his identity is verified by a legitimate source.

Posted by: Michelle Hanners at July 10, 2007 03:21 PM

I must agree. I don't have a problem with what Rick is doing, just with where he is doing it. Life Coaches choose that as their career path and, make no mistake, they charge for their services. Nothing wrong with that...they just shouldn't promote their business on this blog.

Posted by: John at July 10, 2007 01:01 PM

Oh boy here we go an old fable he wont get into
yet says what it is and that some on this board have fallen into it.
Rick summed up his purpose in this sentence
"i'll meet you for free, we will get on a plan to discover what God created you to do."
So I must ask what church do you preach at?
not too many "life coaches" I know that aren't preachers.
no matter how you look at it you are soliciting using this public forum and as a Blog AUTHOR no less.
dont know that this should be permitted.
perhaps the portland website under businesses or churches would be more fitting to your cause.

DeeAnna and MDL,

Wow!

I once heard an old fable, that I won't get into at this point, about citizen's in a community making decisions and statements before knowing the whole story. It looks as if you both may have fallen into the same category.

This blog is not in anyway used to promote my business. But, I am making myself available to anyone who does have questions or concerns about a topic that is probably one of the heaviest burdens a person may bear. That is the topic of their work and how they can find balance. Finding balance by living their lives around things and people they love, rather than living a life around a job they hate.

You see, I am a Life Coach. That is what I do. Invest my time in others to help them find their calling and enjoy what they do.

I'll tell you this. Anyone that is struggling with their work and would like to discover what their dreams and passions are for providing for their family, mention this blog and I'll meet with you for free. We will get on a plan to discover what God created you to do.

Maybe contacting me to find my motive would have been more appropriate instead of lashing out on a service to the community. But, that's what a public forum is for I guess.

Thanks for reading, and keep commenting. That's what makes this forum great.

But if you dread Monday mornings and getting up to make the commute to your work, I look forward to meeting you.

Posted by: Rick at July 9, 2007 04:25 PM

I think you are both wrong...
This to me seems like someone with a heart to help others. I visited his website and found some great topics.

I did not see this as a business pitch. Why, because he has his e-mail at the end? Have you e-mailed him?

This did not come across to me as a sales pitch, trust me I know a salesman when I see one.

Keep giving hope Freedom Coach!

Posted by: DCA at July 9, 2007 04:10 PM

MDL, it had the potential to be refreshing, but when you get to the end and see that it's all just been a spiel to get business, it was disappointing. It would be refreshing to see one person do something without personal gain being the end result. Guess I'm just grumpy lately, but using the blog for business really turned me off.

Posted by: DeeAnna at July 7, 2007 09:49 AM

I think you're right DeeAnna, I think that was a free plug for his business, lol. However, it was a bit refreshing to see a post that wasn't someone griping about something!

Posted by: MDL at July 7, 2007 01:35 AM

Let's see if I got this right:

If I contact you at rick@freedomcoach.org you will be able to help me to "Discover my passion and Live my Dream " ????

You aren't by any chance using this blog to promote your business, are you ?

Hmmmmm.....I'm not sure that's the purpose of the blog. You got your free plug in though.

If you had simply written the story about the importance of training a child in the way he should go.....and leaving out the plug for your business, it would have been a good message....and a good blog topic, but all I saw was a business pitch.
