iPhone

iphone.jpg

Well, this Friday is the day of Apple's long-awaited iPhone release. There are supposed to be huge lines at the Apple Retail Store in Nashville and the AT&T Wireless Stores. Just curious if anybody here is planning to buy one??

I'm afraid that we won't be able to use iPhones in Portland due to our limited cell phone/wi-fi coverage. Wish we could, however, it looks neat. What a piece of engineering!

For a guided tour of the iPhone, you can go here. http://www.apple.com/iphone/usingiphone/guidedtour.html The video is about 20 minutes long, but it's fascinating to watch.

Certificate of Deposits

dollars.jpg

I have a 6-month CD with one of our banks in Portland. The CD was paying 5+ percent, and it matured today. It's a lot of trouble to go to the bank, and I was tempted just to let the CD renew for another six months. However, I went to the bank to check on the rates. Had I let the CD renew automatically, the bank would have paid 1.19%. Yes, that's the number I was quoted, one point one nine percent!!!!!!!! I switched it to a 9-month CD and got 5.13%.

A couple of things to keep in mind if you have certificates of deposit:

1. When they mature, always go into the bank and check on the renewal rates. If you don't, chances are the bank will significantly lower your rate.

2. Banks play games with their CD rates. One time, the 5-month CD has the best rate. The next time, it may be the 7-month CD. The next time, it may be the 6-month CD. Net result: you can't let the CD you have renew automatically.

3. Remind your friends and relatives to do the same. A lot of older people invest only in CDs, and it can be very easy for them to get taken.

As far as the banks that do this kind of thing (and you know who you are), this is really a reprehensible and shameful practice. You are taking advantage of your customers, especially customers (like older people) who have difficulty getting to the bank in person. Our leaders also encourage people to do business locally. This kind of bank business practice does not encourage us to keep our business local.

Please Mr. and Ms. Banker, remember the Golden Rule and treat your customers the way you would like to be treated.

Does Portland have another RISING STAR!

As reported in the local paper, Avery Hovey 16 of Portland beat out 249 other singers from 36 states to win big in the Music City Rising Star youth vocal competition.

Among other things she plans to audition for the season eight American Idol!

Avery and her family moved to portland in recent years to pursue her singing career and get some exposure in the Country music world. I think this will be exciting to follow. Way to GO Avery!

Avery has a website www.averyhovey.com

Seclusion Rooms in Sumner County Schools

I just saw on the channel 4 news about the seclusion rooms in our schools. This was appalling!! I had no idea this was going on in our school system. The news was talking about the room at Clyde Riggs. They said the room is approx. 3' x 4'. If you put your child in a closet at home and shut the door DHS would be all over you.

So it seems it's not alright to spank our children at school but it's ok to lock them up like they are in prison.

If you don't already know a seclusion room in a box like room where they put unruly children for a limited amount of time.

Does anyone else have a problem with this behavior??

Blog Direction

Thanks to everyone who commented on my last post about blog direction. It appears that blog software lets authors have total control over their entries. Authors can add entries, delete their entries, and delete the comments attached to their entries.

Movable Type, the software we use, does not allow us to change this. We are therefore asking blog authors NOT to delete their entries nor the comments associated with their entries.

These are historical records on the day-to-day thoughts of Portland, and we would like to preserve them as a permanent record.

I have updated the blog-posting procedure here: http://www.portlandtn.com/blog.htm

Thanks for your cooperation.
Charlie
