BLOG TOPICS Being Deleted - Is this Fair
I don't know if anyone has realized this but many topics of discussion have recently been deleted from this Blog, I know as a Blog Author (one that can start new topics) that you can go and delete topics that you (as the author) have started, Have I ever done so.... NO, but it appears that atleast ONE Author has. I myself find this disturbing, look around for yourself and see who's topics are missing. I've gone and sorted the topics and one particular name/author is no longer showing which either means He/She or Administration deleted the many many topics they had authored on this site. I stumbled upon this because there was a topic this person started that I wanted to revisit for review of a post and it is no longer there, so then I looked for others, and poof they are gone. With that I ask why do we bother posting on this blog!

Minimum wage is a "Feel Good" issue.
If a business is forced to raise what it pays it just passes the cost on. You really don't see any thing in the end.
I remember when the minimum was $1.65/hour. Percentage wise you get about the same now as then.
You don't see any extra monies in the end.

digman...I am confused by your posts. You bash the local establishment, you complain about low wages and the "sweatshop" mentality of local factories. Don't you realize that state Republicans, including our own state senator Diane Black voted AGAINST raising the state's minimum wage?
You praise free speech, then bash liberals...hey I agree with many of your assessments of the local government, but your liberal hating posts don't even make sense.
You say the liberals hate free speech? What was the entire Dixie Chicks thing about? Free speech! I don't believe it was the liberals fighting to silence them. I just can't figure you out.

you people that complain and moan about bickering on the blog make me sick. it's a blog. say what you want!! if you get so hot and bothered about what is said, pick up your toys and go home!
its a blog!
Posted by: digman at May 21, 2007 12:08 AM
free speech rules. the liberals hate it.
let people say what they want, respond if you choose to. somebody needs to start a "everything is great and portland is not corrupt" blog for all these whiners that want to limit what people say. if you dont like whats being said, speak out against it, but dont try to silence others.
communism does not work.

Portland Resident- Do we need a nap?

how much did jody pay mike to delete all his dirty laundry???????????????????????????????
Posted by: Portland Resident at May 19, 2007 10:15 AM
Mack - Thank you for pointing that out, and yes I do see the connection in several posts below and I believe you're correct.
Admin did reply and they are looking into what can be done to see to it that this doesn't happen again. Like they said authors/users should not be able to delete topics and comments as this reduces the value of the blog when that happens.
Posted by: Judy at May 11, 2007 06:05 AM
Judy, don't sweat it. I believe it's obvious your adversarie(s) are posting under multiple names. Notice how the posts supporting one another are worded, spaced the same....."GB" and "Bob" posted within three minutes of each other, and both posts continue the same tone.
Notice the use of semi colons in each post. These posts are all the same people (wonder who). Look closely at how they are all worded, spaced and punctuated!!!!
Posted by: Mack at May 10, 2007 10:40 PM
There's nothing wrong with a little arguing, as long as it doesn't get personal, or, if you chose to get personal you at least state your FULL name so the personal attacks can be returned.

What are you talking about? I was reading through all the posts and everyone keeps saying, "why even use the blog".
Posted by: JessBeth at May 9, 2007 03:33 PM
WOW - we have lift off!
the guy has freedom or he doesnt
she dont like it, so now it is wrong; it was all old news
what was the real reason for this post?
i think the comment gotcha game was right on
let the admin people put it back up - who cares
we will give judy sometime to respond - it will take a couple of minutes for her to find the top of her head after it blew off.....;)

It has been a while since I have posted, but right off the top of my head, I remember giving someone advice about the sports in Portland. They were new to the city and their child or grandchild wanted to play a sport. I remember the posting of the railroad crossing. I never knew how long it takes a train to cross each intersection. I never knew the timing was different. I personally enjoy hearing local news, local gossip, funny postings, or even small bickering. It doesn't hurt my feelings. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. What makes me upset is to have someone outside of my hometown, posting to other blogs, try to degrade it. We all live here together. We all have a right to learn, grow, enjoy, and complain together in and about our hometown.

Judy- ahhhh, now I see what you are saying.

Councilman Callis
I am truly surprised at you and your comment of "Continuing to play the Gotcha Game is not helpful" I have backed you many times on this blog for the heat that was being pitched at you with the few exceptions where we truly did not see eye to eye. Disappointed in your actions YOU BET!
You post yours to be useful when YOU have the need for them to be useful to YOU, and then what......... I guess being here since the beginning makes it ok that you wipe out hundreds and hundreds of comments, people's voices! I would never do this and feel it is wrong, but then again I have only been around the blog for about a year, how you figure when something has lost it's usefulness is beyond me, but I guess that is what you think of all the people who spoke out on these topics!
I'm sorry for the direction this blog has taken as well. I wanted to be a part of this blog, I asked to be an author and I've taken pride in the majority of topics I've started, have they turned out the way I think, NOT necessarily, everyone is entitled to their opinions, Have I learned from this blog, Absolutely. I am a nobody in this town, just a tax paying City resident that cares, I have no political, business or religious motivations just a plain ole Jane, maybe all of the Blog authors should make it a habit of deleting their topics then there would be nothing to read making this blog truly useless.

GB -- this blog does a very positive thing even though there are a lot of negative comments and things that aren't useful..the positive thing is that is gives a place for people to bring ideas and express opinions to be viewed by a lot of people that they wouldn't have otherwise. As with everything, tv, radio, the newspaper, you take what you can get from it that is helpful to you and disregard the rest. You can just skip over the bickerers and trouble-makers and look for the useful good information that is found here.
Posted by: DeeAnna at May 9, 2007 12:43 PM
Yes I did delete my post, but this is nothing new.
Periodically I have done so since this blog has been going.
I post mine to be useful and when I feel the usefulness is over, I delete them.
I was one of the first to post to this blog. Brian Ruckle and myself discussed having a blog; so I have been here since the beginning.
I am sorry the direction this blog has taken.
Judy could have emailed me directly and asked, but she chose not to.
There is nothing suspicious here. I have done it in the past and nothing was said.
Continuing to play the gotcha game is not helpful.
Posted by: Councilman Callis at May 9, 2007 12:24 PM
Michelle, the main page will only hold so many topics once they reach the bottom and a new topic gets started the last one previously on the page will then be filtered into the topics to the right of the main page and you will have to get to them from there, topics that have actually been deleted will not be there. Look back thru all the topics, do you find ANY that were authored/started by Councilman Callis, I sure don't!
Stir things up or not, if those who do post on this site take the time to do so, the courtesy should atleast be given to let these voices be heard, regardless if you view it as bickering, griping, silly or whatever. Believe me there have been many "comments" made on this blog that should of been deleted because they bordered slander and this should not be allowed.
I've emailed the blog administrator and asked if they know of any reason this may of happened. There are topics still on this blog from years ago, I just find it odd that so many current ones are gone.
Posted by: Judy at May 9, 2007 11:27 AM
Something else to stirr people up.
There will be no great debate of ideas here, because people just want to bicker all the time.
I hope this thread gets deleted!
Posted by: bob at May 9, 2007 10:56 AM
Get a grip, this blog does nothing positive.
Does it matter if it is here or not?

Joseph -
I just read what you wrote...about the "crushing depression"
I have found the blog to be very informative - I've learned things here that I didn't know before; the most recent was the discussion about who owns a lot of the empty buildings in town, etc.
In every discussion anywhere there are going to be comments that you don't like -- but that is what is so great about this country that we live in -- that everyone has a voice.
It may not the polished voice, the most educated voice - but it's theirs to voice.
Blogs are a good place for people to express their concerns and frustrations and maybe out of them will come some productive results. You never know who is reading this blog or contributing to it..that may be sitting on a future City Council.
I think the "crushing depression" comes from the realization that only 28% of this city's population cared enough to vote.
Maybe one productive thing to come from this blog will be that people may get interested in who is making decisions in this town and go vote next time around.
Posted by: DeeAnna at May 9, 2007 10:46 AM
who cares.
this thing is really silly.
Posted by: rt at May 9, 2007 10:44 AM
All "deleted" topics can be accessed to the RIGHT of the main blog page. Dale, the posts you are referring to are in the BUSINESS category.
Hope this helps.
Posted by: Michelle Hanners at May 9, 2007 10:39 AM
Yes, I have noticed that. At first, I thought it was a specific thread related to business postings. I had made several postings, particularly the ones about our difficulties over the past few months. I can no longer find them. Not sure if this is what you mean, but you are correct that postings are dissappearing. This makes it difficult to continue a discussion, and we end up repeating information already on here (or it WAS on here).
Posted by: Dale Hensarling at May 9, 2007 08:16 AM
To answer your question, I'm not really sure why anyone bothers posting on here. Look at any post that has gotten any activity - it always degrades to bickering, name-calling, and other nonsense in no time at all. Here something to think about: Has anything productive or positive for Portland ever resulted from this blog?
On the other hand, it sure is entertaining to read, once you get past the crushing depression that comes from the realization: "I live near these people?"
