Earth Day
Today is Sunday, April 22, 2007 -- Earth Day. Thanks to everyone who is taking care of our planet by reducing energy use, driving less, planting trees, recycling, etc.
I would like to challenge Sumner County to return the recycling bins to Portland. The Sumner County Resource Authority removed the bins a couple of years ago. Since then, they have replaced the bins in Gattaltin and Hendersonville, but not Portland. Hopefully, the City of Portland will work with Sumner County to make sure this happens by next Earth Day! Thank you.

waaaaah, somebody said something i dont agree with, we need to censor that person and deny his free speech rights. get over yorself.
if you want to hug an islamofacist, go for it.
in turn, they will slap a burka on your head
and if you happen to voice an opinion, they will promptly stone you in the middle of the street.
thats why we are over there we have to kill the scumbags before they kill us.go troops!

Digman's comments of "hate" should be stricken from the Blog. When someone starts talking how he hates a certain group of people ... sounds threatening to me.
Posted by: DeeAnna at May 22, 2007 08:01 PM
Your hate filled propoganda and self-proclaimed superiority has been lost on me. I am entitled to my opinions and beliefs and the wonderful thing about AMERICA is that we don't HAVE to agree with the government. We can freely and openly express our dissent whenever we dang well please. Exercising those rights does not make us unpatriotic, in fact it is just the opposite.
PATRIOTIC: a proud supporter or defender of his or her country and its way of life
Our way of life, our Constitution, says it's ok to not agree with the leaders and even has checks and balances WITHIN the government itself. Opression is what's unpatriotic. Trying to deny our citizens their civil liberties is unpatriotic.
Your "opinions" are just that, "opinions". Factually, you don't have a leg to stand on.

the looney left is claiming we violated their privacy.they're more concerned about the fanatics rights than the lives of our american solders. hang 'em and hang 'em high.
Posted by: digman at May 20, 2007 11:32 AM
how about that evil patriot act that was used last week to stop those scumbag fanatic muslums from killing our AMERICAN solders in new jersey at fort dix? send 'em to club gitmo.

LMBO DANIEL! ;)
I have read a lot of complaints about the litter in the highway, but so far, unless I have missed it, no one has said anything about the people who stand out in front of C.A.R.E.S. and rummage through donations, stealing what they want. I think it might be THEM that are causing the mess.
I have never mentioned my occupation before, but this is relevant to the issue:
Cares doesn't provide pick-ups, but I own a small courier company that has extra special rates for C.A.R.E.S. donation pick-ups and large item delivery. They have a flyer posted on their bulletin board.
Posted by: Michelle Hanners at May 15, 2007 07:52 AM
The barrier they put up, that they thought would stop the dumping, did not work. Take the barrier down then at least the articles will not be spilling out into the road. It is obvious the police are not going to do anything about this problem. They have more important things to do. Looks like CARES needs to hire an after hours security guard for nights and weekends.
It seems like I read something about they were going to build a new CARES out 52W. Anybody else read that?
Posted by: Jazzy3 at May 14, 2007 03:14 PM
I just come back from dropping off some things at c.a.r.e.s and thought to share what I witnessed.
As I was pulling into the receiving lane I noticed a truck in front of me pulling a trailer full of Furniture and the like, a cares employee or volunteer that was out front of the building directed this truck to the back of the building to unload, the driver then proceeds to do so, and attempted to back the trailer into the receiving lane, mind you if you have ever trailered anything you know just how difficult this is.... little own a female, I patiently waited, as she backed and forwarded, back and forward many many times until yes she got that trailer backed in there PERFECTLY!! Only to be told by the two gentlemen at the receiving doors that they had to take the load BACK to the front of the building.
I think cares can solve most of their problems with the dumping after hours on the road if they would just provide an area where people could leave their stuff, make several fenced in cubicles that can be self locking once they are about full by just closing a gate that can't be open from the outside. I don't know, but surely there is a better way to keep the stuff off the road than what they are doing now. Not everyone has the ability to drop things there during their business hours, maybe they should offer pickup service, I know the hope center in Whitehouse does, and they don't have the problem of having to get rid of useless stuff because if it isn't sellable when they go out to pick it up they won't take it.

I didn't see the Bush dictatorship listed in that rant
Posted by: Daniel Suddeath at May 14, 2007 12:57 PM
It really wouldn't be that hard to catch the people who are dumping that stuff there. That's just not a priority, it looks like. What about putting a fine into place ...and enforcing it...fining whoever puts stuff there by the road $500. Bet that would stop it.
Posted by: DeeAnna at May 13, 2007 08:29 PM
why cant the police just set up a sting and bust these people that dump their junk at p.cares.
somebody's benifiting somewhere or this would stop.it used to be people would leave a chair or table, etc. but now some just use it as a trash dump. catch 'em on video.prosecute.

Does anyone know why they got rid of the recycling bins???
I notice that Gallatin has some behind their City Hall.....
Does anyone know why public dumping is allowed by the highway at CARES ??? That is simply ridiculous for that to be allowed.
Posted by: DeeAnna at May 7, 2007 12:46 AM
Michelle, thanks for being the voice of reason. Digman, I often agree with your posts regarding the state of Portland, TN. but your post below is ridiculous. Just because someone doesn't view America as you do, doesn't mean they aren't Patriots or are concerned Americans.
Let's keep this blog about Portland, TN.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, in fact it is our constitutional right to free speech that allows us to not only have an opinion but to express those opinions openly without any sort of retribution by the GOVERNMENT, however OPINIONS are subject to scrutiny by anyone with opposing opinions.
It doesn't matter who you are, what political or religious affiliations you associate yourself with (if any), or how much money you make.(or don't make)some people are able to communicate their opinions more repectfully and effectively than others. Even if you have an otherwise legitimate complaint, your point will most likely be lost within the context of a personal attack.
GOD BLESS US ALL!

lets see, only republicans benefit from the oil co.s algore makes millions from his oxy petroleum
stocks and his coal mine clear cutting stocks, but hey thats ok. he's a liberal. his private jets and the blimp tippers classic hotrod are ok for them not you, you insignificant pubes.
as far as the patriot act, you can not site one abuse that has been prosecuted to this day. the patriot act just tells citizens to alert authorities when we see something suspicious that we think could be terror-related.the thing you liberals have against it is the word "patriot" because you are not patriots. you hate america you love dictatorships like castro, chavez, lenin, etc. you hate the military that keeps you free to spew the vile anti-american pablum that flows from your anti- 1rst and 2nd amendment hating mouths. GOD bless AMERICA.
GOD bless the PRESIDENT of the U.S.A.

SHAME ON YOU PORTLAND!!!!

3 out of the 4 candidates I voted for WON so I am happy about that outcome BUT I am sick that people in Portland could care less about this town. 28%??? This is so ridiculous it's almost funny.
Posted by: DebraP at May 2, 2007 08:20 AM
Yes it is very hypocritical.
I think it is a loud and clear indication that MOST of the people who live in Portland simply do not care. Which enlightens me on why there are so many buildings in dis-repair, why there is not more retail in Portland, among all of the other things we have talked about before.
BUT, as I have said before....attitude reflects leadership!
Posted by: JW at May 2, 2007 07:26 AM
28% voted ??? That's disgraceful. Well.....I voted....and I will always vote. It's my opinion that if you don't vote...you don't appreciate the American system or value the sacrifices that so many have given to protect our freedoms and allowing us to have the privilege of voting and having at least, our voice, in our government.
To not vote is........well, I just don't have words.
Perhaps if they gave out free burger coupons or free Coke coupons from Sonic or something, instead of the " I Voted" sticker...maybe more people would vote......what do you think? Think that would help? Oh well.....Daniel, you're right...it's very hypocritical.
Posted by: DeeAnna at May 2, 2007 01:58 AM
28 percent voted, McDowell, Hobdy, McLerran and Meadows won, all referendums failed
Posted by: Daniel Suddeath at May 1, 2007 10:28 PM
I actually did vote today, and it was actually quite busy at the pace I voted (Clyde Riggs).
Will the result of voting be broadcast on radio this evening?
Posted by: JW at May 1, 2007 06:36 PM
The voting turnout was horrible. What's up with people. Everyone has a lot of complaining to do but no action behind it. Very hypocritical.
Posted by: Daniel Suddeath at May 1, 2007 05:11 PM
Change of subject.........Did everyone remember to vote today? I went about 12:30 and only one other person was there voting. I was very surprised.

I think your post below hits the nail right on the head, we have NOTHING to loose by trying! Great Post!

As much as I hate to fall on the side of Daniel (he and I have never seen eye to eye), I do lean towards the side of the fence that is warning about Global Warming.
This is how I see it, if the Liberals are right and there is Global Warming taking place, then would it not make sence to heed the warning now when we can do something about it?
If the conservatives are right and there is no such thing, then really what have we lost by at least "greening" ourselves up a bit?
On the other hand,
If the liberals are wrong and there is no such thing....what have we lost?
If the conservatives are wrong and there really is Warming happening.....it seems to me that we would loose much more.
So why not err on the side of caution and do something while we can.
I hope you all can follow that....I know its a bit wordy.
Believe me, I am one of those who thinks our political system is seriously broken...there isn't a one of them that are worth anything. BUT, not everything is Bush's fault....not everything is Clinton's fault.
Maybe it's all of our fault for electing some of these yahoo's in the first place.
Posted by: JW at May 1, 2007 12:41 PM
All I'm trying to say is this.
Everyday is Earth Day.
Don't do something because someone is trying to push a false or misleading agenda (Global Warming, etc)
We Americans are a group of wasteful people and do most everything in excess. Look at eating and our waist lines for example.

Voice of treason? who's starting a fight? what are you talking about?
Posted by: Daniel Suddeath at May 1, 2007 09:25 AM
Sorry, I didn't finish my thought. My point being, that bickering and arguing seem to be a major form of entertainment and a way of life here; I wasn't trying to start a church bashing thread, just a comment about the argumentative nature of so many of Portland's finest citizens.
Posted by: DA at May 1, 2007 08:23 AM
You know, when we first came to this area, we were impressed by the number of churches in Middle Tennessee. Thought we were going to live in a place where people truly believed in God and would love their neighbor, treat others fairly, and stand up for the downtrodden.
Ten years later, we now understand that there are an abundance of churches in the area for one simple reason -- people can't get along. If a group gets upset with something that is going on in their church, they rent a storefront and start their own church.
Sad, isn't it?
Posted by: DA at May 1, 2007 08:15 AM
Holy shit...is there any topic that degrade to bickering on this blog? Seriously....
Posted by: Voice of Reason at April 30, 2007 09:00 PM
Yeah, I think ethanol is a farce too. I'm not saying we should all hold hands and sing "Plant a tree" but come on, Gore is from Tennessee, what happened to loving thy neighbor? You don't think a good ole boy from Tennessee would lie do ya?
Posted by: Daniel Suddeath at April 30, 2007 03:01 PM
O boy a fight.. err a debate.
Global warming is a farce. The Earth is in a decaying orbit that the reason for the increase in temps.
Volcanoes do more damage with one eruption than All of mankind in a hundred years.
The Ozone is ever moving..Somedays the hole is bigger and others it's smaller.
Believe what you want. I think it's all about the $$. Fund this project and waste money on that one.
Just like ethanol.. it takes more energy to make it than you get from using it. But it's the current hot button issue.
Posted by: jwmason at April 30, 2007 01:57 PM
Speaking of taking away rights, where were you when Bush and the looney tunes decided to take away our rights during the Patriot Act? Extreme cold and hot temps are both related to global warming. I'm not saying it will happen tomorrow or even in our life times, but I think you would have to admit that our treatment of earth is being affected through pollution and carbon outputs. Lets face it, this is always going to be a political issue. Big businesses and oil companies put millions in the pockets of Republican politicians, do you think they will ever come out and say they are against pollution? What does Gore gain from wanting us to clean up our acts compared to what conservatives will lose?
Posted by: Daniel Suddeath at April 30, 2007 09:21 AM
no i dont beilieve in global warming, its a bunch of bullcrap.its funny how many global warming rallies were canceled the last month and a half because it was unseasonally cold.but if you ask the liberals they blame the cold on global warming also they cant make up their mind.im not saying that we shouldnt conserve and ignore waste and pollution, im just sick of hypocritical liberal democrats (algore- sheryl crow-bon jovi-barbara striesand-rosie odonell-john travolta-ted danson-the democrat house and senate-john edwards-john kerry, etc.) telling us that we shouldnt even drive our cars while they travel on tour buses and private lear jets and live in mansions that took about a million trees to build, they're hypocrites!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: digman at April 29, 2007 01:18 PM
It never hurts to educate ourselves and do our part in cutting down waste. That's my opinion, and that is what I though the purpose of this particular blog was.
Posted by: Mack at April 29, 2007 11:51 AM
digman.... So you don't think the earth is in turmoil and that global warming is real???
What IS everyone doing to save the earth?
Posted by: dontmakemelaugh at April 29, 2007 11:14 AM
you think my words are crazy, just look up what the liberal looney tune sheryl crow said. she said we should all use only 1 sqare of toilet paper to wipe after using the bathroom.like it or not global warming was started by the communist parties in america to pass laws to limit freedoms because they cant win at the ballot box.these lefties want to impose regulations that they themselves have no intention of adheareing to.
in a nutshell that is the definition of communism.
do as i say, not as i waste.
Posted by: digman at April 29, 2007 09:16 AM
Oh Good Grief Digman! Now, I'm with you on the hypocrisy of the Gores, but you completely lost me with your maniacal rantings about "liberal commies". Come on now.
Posted by: Michelle Hanners at April 29, 2007 04:58 AM
just remember, global warming is cosenses not science.global warming panic was designed to create panic so the socialist liberal communist wannabes (algore) can chip away at our freedoms.
algore wont stop his energy waste in his oversized mansions and the blimp tipper wont stop driving her gas guzzling classic hotrod around brentwood or using their private air polluting jets but the rest of us underlings are supposed to go back to the stoneage and live.
oh, but thats right, algore buys carbon offsets from himself so his waste and pollution are ok.
you liberal commies that support this pig and his farse are such hypocrites.

This blog entry is an issue dear to my heart also. We had the paper recycling bins at some schools in Portland and they were not abused. However, they were used often both from school by-products and parents/teachers bringing in home paper products. The schools even made a small amount of money from the recycling that could be used to purchase much needed items.
When the Resource Authority's situation changed, the bins were removed. We have been asking for them to be returned ever since we learned that they were back in other areas of the county. Of course, being Portland, we are always left until last or receive the "short straw" on issues with education and such matters. (Side note: Look at our new high school compared to the Station Camp High School --Taj Mahal vs. army barracks)
If citizens of Portland would get up-in-arms about these issues and attend the county commissioners' meetings, school board meetings, and write, call, or visit the city and county officials, then we could accomplish what our city and children deserve. However, complacency and inactivity get us nowhere.
I hope each of you pay close attention to the way that the 2 commissioners from this area vote for education. They do NOT place importance on it. The students of today really are our leaders of tomorrow. Don't we want those from Portland to be top-notch and able to achieve just as much as those from Hendersonville and Gallatin? If you do, please take action.
Posted by: you at April 28, 2007 05:40 AM
I agree with DA..Portland cares takes gently used items, not your piece of junk stuff you are too lazy to throw away...there was a box tipped over into the road this past sunday..people were swerving to avoid it..it is RIDICULOUS!
Posted by: Jessica E. at April 25, 2007 02:06 PM
Mack,
I wonder if those are the same stupid people who feel a need to dump their garage-sale leftovers in front of Portland CARES; after they are closed, and outside of the barrier, in the narrow shoulder of a Tennessee Highway. And are those the same police who do nothing about ticketing those stupid people?
Personally, I think that Portland should install a camera, get the license plate and address of anyone who dumps there illegally, list their names in the newspapers each week, and pack up all the junk from the side of the road. Then the junky trash should be taken to the home of one of the offenders and dumped in their front yard. Let them pay to have it hauled away.
Posted by: DA at April 25, 2007 10:42 AM
I also used the old recycle bins all the time when they were made available to us. The problem was, and is all too common in a town like ours is that people are stupid. I saw a guy dump an old car seat, I'm talking an entire car seat, in front of the bins once. I also saw someone had dumped an old couch there once as well. People are too stupid too realize that having a place to leave your recycled stuff isn't also inviting you to dump your trash.
This could have been remedied, however. It was funny that people got away with dumping trash illegally in front of our old recycle bins, and you and I could both reason that many a time, this would be a time consuming thing to do, dumping large amounts of things, but this was done RIGHT NEXT TO OUR POLICE STATION.
There should have been cameras installed or something, because this should never have gotten out of hand like it did.
I really miss the bins, and it took me a while to really get over throwing away my newspapers and aluminum cans, because I have always wanted to do my part (recycling), but oh well, I had to, and I did. And like Debra said, I now have twice as much trash for the city to take out. But then again, I pay $14 a month for it to be hauled away, so oh well.
