Safety in Our Schools

I have received an e-mail from Chris Kellas asking me to post this message to the blog for comments.

Dear Mr. Myers,
I am currently overseas, working in Afghanistan, protecting our interests in counterterrorism for our country. I am a retired Navy Seal with years of experience in protection and making evaluations of the vulnerabilities that open up possible problems for our Americans.

I became concerned after hearing again, one more incident that involved our children in our public schools and wrote Congressman Bart Gordon about my experience and concern and the possibilities of looking at our schools weaknesses and corrective actions that could be implemented to prevent any negative happenings in our Community. I have attached the letter that he returned to me for your review and with this, I would like to get some feedback on your blog of how the community would feel about having their schools being evaluated, a full report given and the suggested remedies implemented. I anxiously await your return, Chris Kellas

Dear Chris,

Thank you for contacting me about
safety and security in our schools. I
appreciate hearing from you.

I share your concerns about preventing
violence in our schools. The Federal
government does provide some funding to
local schools districts (through the Safe
and Drug-Free Schools program, among others)
to prevent student violence, keep weapons
out of schools, and train school personnel
in emergency response and crisis management.
This funding also can be used for school
security threat assessments. This year, the
President proposed eliminating funding for
the Safe and Drug Free Schools program, but
at least some funding is likely to be
restored by Congress. If you are interested
in working with schools in Sumner and
Robertson counties and finding out whether
any funding may be available, you should
contact the local school boards. I have
included contact information for the school
boards below.

Benny Bills, Director of Schools
Sumner County Board of Education
695 East Main Street
Gallatin, TN 37066
(615) 451-5200

Dan Whitlow, Director of Schools
Robertson County Schools
2121 Woodland Street
Springfield, Tennessee 37172
(615) 384-5588

I hope you find this information
helpful. Please call on me in the future if
I may be of service.

Stay in touch,
/s
BART GORDON
Member of Congress

I had to move from Portland in 2000, but I really miss the town a lot. The things that I loved about living in Portland are: the parades, especially the Strawberry Parade. I also remember the live music downtown during festival time. I don't know if ya'll still have that or not. Also, I liked the familiarity of living in a small town where people know you, (which can also be a curse, ha ha). And it is true that southern people are more laid-back and NICE, unlike the people where I live in Iowa.

Anyhow, thanks for your time. I miss Portland, Tennessee, my hometown.

I disagree with the assessment of Bart Gordon. The man has been there for so long for one reason...he is an effective representative. He has always been very approachable and easily accessable, and is always responsive to the concerns of his constituents (unlike most of our city and county leaders-lol).

Only conservatives will believe giving more money to well off schools provides equality

like i said, only leftist liberals will call an increase in funding a cut.

I think this is a great idea. We need to know, as parents and grandparents, just how safe are our schools. This subject as been discussed before on this blog.

The Socialist Teacher's Union, that has to be one of the worst assesments ever. There's nothing socialistic about our schools. Bush has done plenty to hurt them and it all started with No Child Left Behind. Same old conservative crap, you're worried about democrats de-funding the troops but you're not worried about the moron who continues to send them to die overseas for something that will never come true. Tell ole W to get another oil contract and Pelosi will be fine with her face lift.

oh yeah, how come the only time we hear from comendant gordon is around election time, when he comes out to scare the elderly. this man is useless. i watch c-span 1&2 all the time and he is never on the floor debating anything. and to the brave soldier KELLAS, i'm sorry that you got such a lame excuse from the congressman. just blame it on bush. as much as this president has angered me by letting the socilists neuter him on killing terrorist, he did not cut anything in school funding, he just didnt give ted kennedy
[the swimmer} everthing he asked for in his outrageous budget proposal. only in loony left land will an increase equal a cut. i hope you stay safe and that the libeals dont de-fund our troops like they want to.hey pelosi, have another facelift and maybe you will see things clearer.

oh, here we go again. lets throw money at problems. the real problem is the socialist teachers union. back when i was in school, if you swore at a teacher or threatened them, you were in the hall with a paddle getting about 5 licks.because of the socialist liberal left wing teachers union, schools no longer teach academics, only a bunch of mumbo-jumbo marxist crap.

"proposed eliminating"

This is not the same as doing it. It's just a thought. Also how good is this program doing anyway? If it's not working then by all means do away with it. No use wasting the money on a program that's not working (If this is the case).

I for one believe this would be a GREAT evaluation for our schools and something the school system should really consider. I also find it discomforting that cuts in this area are being made, this is very unsettling. I believe anything that can be accomplished to better secure our schools is worth the cost.

What I would like to stress in this topic is that we refrain from pointing out possible problems with the current status of our schools. I'm sure this is not what mr Kellas is asking for, we sometimes get off track noting problems that need a remedy, It would not be in the best interest of our children to do so here where anyone can see what we the parents believe are possible security flaws within our schools system.

It really doesn't matter what teachers do outside of setting up a metal detector at each door. It seems there will always be violence in school but it's a shame the president would cut money to keep kids safe in america to spend it keeping no one safe.
