City Leaders Your Opinions Wanted!! #1
I am selecting a few issues brought up by posters from another post "Challenge 2007 for our City" I think it would be good to see what the City Leaders have to say on some of these issues. I know there are several councilman that do post to the blog, and perhaps those that do could encourage your counterparts to join in.
I know in the past councilman who have posted with good intentions have been met by negativity, lets respect them for their thoughts and allow them to speak, general replies should be kept on track and short.
If this works I will move on to another topic #2, #3, #4 etc
#1
Junk and visible trash businesses should be forced to relocate or clean it up. Look at north 109. It is a dump from Pizza hut north about a half mile. A total eyesore.

ANIMAL CONTROL
To the gental man with the pitbull problem you have my sympathies.
Comming from the big city I might share with you some big city wisdom or less
or lessly a story . A police officer once told my husband and I that home owners need to do what is approiate for the situation the stating we rarely catch a crimal in the act we are most time the clean up crew, and we do the paper work. As for pitbulls I never met one I liked.
I might ask if you are that concered about animals running lose , have you ever considered donating some free time to animal control it is what keeps cost under control or less helps, save putting someone else on the goverment payroll.

to the councilman of portland you never say nothing good about the field workers of portland instead of giving these big raises to just city hall workers why not give something to the employees that make it possible for these big wheels to make the money they do without the workers out there they sure wouldnt be making the money they do some of these people make almost as much as a doctor citizens of portland you would be surprised at what some of these people make at city hall they act like they dont care nothing about the employees at all my advice is dont give none of them a raise they make enough now

Yeah, Dannys towing is a real eyesore and the fact that the car wash is right there as well just makes it look that much worse at the north end of town. But then again, if you play with a snake (D.S.) you will get bit!(or,well u know).
Posted by: virginia native at February 26, 2007 08:23 AM
I think that car wash at the north end of town should be handled as well. Also Dannys Towing is a pretty bad eyesore out front and in the back an side as well.I mean at least park them old junky wreckers straighter and make it look more organized.

The city should fine these businesses for not cleaning up. It is a horrific site!! If Portland wants new businesses and residents, then clean up this city and if these businesses don't want to comply, fine them until: A.They leave, or B. Clean up their mess. It is really embarrasing to the people who are trying to sell Portland.

ANON,
No, my dog was not on a leash. She was in her own yard, at my feet. The pit came into MY yard, on MY propertry.
On one said I was NOT concerned about more police officers. This could be discussed in a separate topic from this one if you like.
Posted by: DebraP at February 10, 2007 05:12 PM
Dear Debra,
Let me ask you, when your dog was almost attacked by this pit bull was your dog on a leash? I bet not. Let me ask you how can you be more concerned with more animal control officers when this city needs more police officers? The crime rate is much higher than animal attacks you do the research and you do the math!

digman
Being a poster and a blog author I experience what I will refer to as delay's in my posts or blog topics showing up on the blog, some times it will not refresh showing the most recent posts. This does not mean that anyone is censoring the blog or deleting entries, it is just part of the internet something that I have experienced many times over with my own web site and most times just clearing out your computers cache will fix that problem.
Posted by: Judy at February 2, 2007 06:44 PM
digman,
1st. I have nothing to do with the operation of this blog, you should contact those who operate the site.
2nd. I have requested information be brought to the next legislative meeting concerning clean-up in the city.
Posted by: Councilman Callis at January 31, 2007 12:06 PM
digman? are you being censored? your guess is as good as mine as to who has access to the blog to remove posts etc. you can send email to me at cashchek@bellsouth.net, sorry if it looks like one of us is doing that, but we're not. I respect your position on this topic and have no reason to censor you
Posted by: Jody at January 31, 2007 10:50 AM
once again, i am being censored from this blog.
i have writen not one thing malicious or profane.
this is not a true blog if you cant speak your mind just because somebody running the blog doesnt agree with what i say. what say you councilmen jody- callis? who runs the blog anyway?
say your piece, man, and stop trying to shut people up that dont necessarilly agree with you.
dont cowar, come on out in the open and state your case, instead of being a facist.
Posted by: digman at January 30, 2007 05:47 PM
it seems to me that the city has the right to clean these junkyards up at their exspense if they refuse.
i have written nothing malicious

newer subdivisions do have a sidewalk on one side.
we need to make it both sides.
I agree with you on sidewalks on 109, but working with TDOT is a little hard. If the new 109 ever gets done it will have sidewalks in town.
we have made some improvements on screening and the requirements of certain plants along with the look of buildings, but we are along way from where we need to be.
I have pushed for what we have now, but there is not a lot of support for implementing design standards.
I have asked for a review of the present practices for cleanup and will be discussing this at the next legislative meeting.

Why cant the city work with the state for cleaning up and making N Broadway a more appealing area. I know we cannot make anyone move, but why not look at installing curbs with entrances and exits to the businesses instead of a free for all coming in and out. With the curbs, proper drainage installed, sidewalks, better street lights, trees and shrubs this will look more attractive for anyone that comes into our city. I have not understood why the city will not mandate more trees and shrubs around buildings and streets to help ease their sizes and appearance. Alot of things can be done to help make the city look better, most of it can be put on the builders with the city having to endure very little cost. We have all the these subdivisions and no sidewalks. What is up with that? We have to walk in the street to get around. NOT SAFE!!!!!

P.S. sorry, i left one out, The tool and die on the south end, We (the city) have been to court many times on that one, can't understand myself what the verdict is on that one, other than it apparently hasn't worked. I feel your pain! But now that you've mentioned these, I'll at least get ya some kind of answer.

hey Digman, just a quick response to your post, one of my best friends in this world was placed in charge once upon a time to clean, mow, and maintain that car wash. He started posting signs, getting rid of old equipment, yada yada yada then shortly thereafter, the owners went belly-up in a manner of speaking. I don't think any of us have a clue WHO is now the contact for that property, but believe you me, I hate,as badly as you do, the way it looks! I'm sure the owner lives in another community, I guess it's not an eye-sore to him. I'm sure this is at the top of the Codes' Officer's list. Why has it looked like this for 16 years? Your guess is as good as mine! Just want to assure you that there's no buddy-buddy involved.
Posted by: Jody McDowell at January 25, 2007 10:33 PM
there is junk at the carwash at the north end that has been there since i moved here 16 years ago. that along with the eyesore tool and die junkyard at the south end are the first things people see when they enter the town. i doubt anything will ever be done because they probably are buddies with some councilmembers.

Thank you Councilman Callis and Councilman Jody, it sounds like plans are in place, and these issues are being addressed, thank you again for your communication on the blog.
Posted by: Judy at January 18, 2007 06:25 PM
I agree completely. I'm at the end of that stretch and everytime I drive down 109 towards town or back I see it. I know that there is a process involved & I agree with Councilman Jody - it's time to do what's right for our community vs. being the nice guy for a few businesses. I've had several people comment to me on how trashy this side of town looks. I'm hoping that something is done pretty soon because we have a great community, it deserves to look the best that it can.

A lot of cities have adopted standards for the way buildings should be erected and look. We have SOME standards now, we (city council) need to give the codes' enforcement guys our blessing to be STRICT and make these folks clean up. We're going to have to stop worrying if we're making someone mad at us for making them abide by the law. This has been an ongoing battle for small towns EVERYWHERE. We've just honestly got to step up to the plate!
Posted by: Councilman Jody at January 17, 2007 10:11 AM
The appearance of our town is a concern; and let me say that Mr. Tabb and Mr. Hinton, at the direction of Mayor Wilber, have been doing a great job. They have cleaned up several places and are working on many others, some of which that will have to go to court.
It is not our objective to run people out of town, but to better educate them about the necessity of presenting an aesthetically pleasing place.
Peer pressure is also effective. When we keep our place clean, it will help others follow suit.
We can do a better job in enforcement and I think we will. We will also need to tighten up on our restrictions for zoning; but it must be a balanced approach, so as not to be to controlling.
