U.S. Senate candidates seeking votes in Portland

HaroldFord1.jpg
I'm glad both U.S. Senate candidates are taking time to stop by Portland. Democrat Harold Ford stopped by Aug. 10 and Bob Corker will be in town for the second time at Bottom View Farms on Sept. 6 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The cost will be $25.

This forum would be a good place for readers to post who they support and why. I will give my response below in the comments section of this post.

For those who didn't make it on short notice to hear Ford in Portland, below is a podcast of the speech that he gave at the pavillion in Meadowbrook Park. In the extended entry, there are additional photos and two YouTube videos of a speech he gave in Bethpage.

"Tax and spend Ford crook"? ah....another one of those Republicans who think they're smart and witty...

Ford gets my vote for a variety of reasons -- most importantly, I think above all we need change in Washington and Ford represents the bipartisan approach that we need to confront the pressing issues of our time.

Just got back from hearing Bob Corker out at Bottom View. I must admit that I am still undecided on which one of these men will get my vote on Nov. 7. B. Ruckle, I know you were there and heard Corker talking about Ford's voting history, and some of Ford's past votes were actually against some of your key points mentioned above. Any thoughts, or any truth to these? I didn't keep notes and hope you are able to put a live pod cast up like you did for Mr. Ford. I am about 50/50 right now and can't wait for the debates. I'm sure Ford is a "wordy" debater, but I am most interested in the views they will debate. This race is actually kind of fun:)

My vote will Go to Harold Ford Jr. and here is why.

I have been and have voted republican all of my life, not any more.

The republicans have had control for how long now? and we are is a bigger mess than ever. I don;t consider myself a member of either party any longer, I am now a registered member of the Constitution party. I am tired of the same old junk over and over.

I like what Ford has to say, Corker has been caught is a lot of lies and half truths, if you'll study it for yourself you will see.

As a self employed indivdual I am tired of writing checks every April for 10's of thousand of dollars only to see it spent on some of the most rediculous "pork barrel" junk ever know to man. 233 million dollars for a bridge is Alaska that nobody uses?....come on!

I don't care if the candidate is green, blue, pink, yellow, black or white...Or even human for that matter! If I'll get a tax break, He/She or it...has my vote. With this is mind, Harold Ford Jr. has been singing my song!

Next is the issue of Illegal Immigration. What has anyone is Washington done about this? People are pouring over our Boarder's, yet Washington claims it is concerned about terrorism, BUT, they let these people prance into our country unchecked....Is this being concerned about terrorism? Get Real.

I truly hope that a viable third party comes forth,(hopefully the Constitution Party) in the next Presidential Election. If so I hope to see a New party in the White House, because the 2 that have been there, have made a mess of everything.

My vote for Ford, is my last great hope that maybe there is someone out there, who won't tell us what we want to hear to get our vote and then let lobbyist's buy their votes. I hope Ford doesn't let me down...if he does, My hope will fade quickly that our country will survive this mess.

(This is my personal opinion and not the opinion of the person I work for.) I'm going to go hear Bob Corker at Bottom View Farm but more than likely I will vote for Harold Ford Jr. this November. Corker isn't that bad and I like him a lot better than the other two Republican alternatives. I could live with him, but I'd rather not. The reasons I support Ford are as follows:
• Digman, what I find worse than taxing and spending is spending and taxing your grandchildren. George Bush is giving his generation, the baby boom generation, tax breaks during their peak earning years and leaving the bill to my generation and to my children's generation. Single party control in Washington has been a disaster. Clinton/Gingrich put the nation's finances back in order and Bush has blown all the gains that we made during that period. We need divided government and gridlock again, so I'm rooting for the Democrats to take one of the two houses. (Preferably the Senate because I would rather not have Nancy Pelosi as majority leader.) I've heard Ford many times and he understands the importance of getting us back to surpluses. The Republicans have not lived up to their philosophy of small government even with a clear majority and instead have become the party of massive national debt. Enough of this fiscal child abuse.
• Foreign policy experience. I'm going to vote for Ford because he has a lot more foreign policy experience than Corker. The foreign policy blunders of the current administration will haunt our country for years.
• I like a maverick. My favorite politicians are those who aren't afraid to stick it to their party. Former Senator Bob Kerrey, Senators Ben Nelson and Chuck Hagel, John McCain, Joe Lieberman, and hopefully Sen. Harold Ford Jr. Bob Corker will be a Bush rubber stamp.
• Tennessee's reputation. This is personal. Having lived many years abroad, I got sick of the condescension I got from Americans who lived in other parts of the Union when I told them I was from Tennessee. They think we are all backwards and racist. I'd like to send a charismatic black Senator to Washington. Ford losing will only reinforce the old stereotype.
• I simply like the guy. I wish he would have run against Lamar Alexander instead of Bob Clement and I wish the House democrats would have had the sense to make him the minority leader instead of Nancy Pelosi. He is one of the early bloomers of my generation and I would be proud to have Harold Ford Jr. as my Senator.
