Spam, spam, and more spam

It's after midnight, and I'm going through my daily routine of cleaning the spam off of the Portland blog. Every day, automated "bots" place fake comments all over the blog. Each of the fake messages has a link which would take the reader to some web site dealing with pornography, prescription meds, or whatever.

I find it really annoying that I have to waste my time getting rid of all this stuff.

I also find it really annoying that:
* My e-mail box gets dozens of spam messages a day.
* My fax machine gets junk faxes for mortage financing and "hot stocks" every day.
* My mail box is crammed with junk mail delivered by the post office every week.

My opinion is that the federal government needs to develop effective laws to combat junk faxing and spamming, and they need to enforce these laws.

I also think each family should have the right to tell the post office they don't want a sea of flyers delivered each week.

Many people say that my opinion is a violation of freedom-of-speech and people should be allowed to send junk faxes and junk mail and spam all they like.

What do others think?

Here is what I do to cut down on the junk mail I receive. First, sign up at this site where you are added to the National Do Not Mail List.
www.directmail.com/junk mail. Next, if I receive any junk mail which is sent First Class I stamp it "unsolicited" and put it back into the mailbox. The post office has to return it to sender. Next, when I receive any monthly bills that have those advertising fliers inserted, I tear the fliers into little pieces and mail them back with my payment. You can learn more ways to control junk mail and spam by visiting:
