I have a son who has Down Syndrome and I'm living in Texas now and after checking into programs for kids like my son Portland has NONE!! I had planned to move back to Portland but now I'm not so sure. And I think if more people would try to understand children with special needs instead of just saying Oh well its not my child why should I help. I like Texas but I would love to move back home. But not if my son would suffer.

I agree with this posting. My brother was a special needs child and he looked forward to the Special Friends camp every summer. For the rest of the year, however, there was very little for him to do.
When I was put on the Parks Committee, we felt that both the special needs kids and the senior citizens were being largely ignored in our parks system. We are slowly trying to change that as opportunities present themselves.
One of the first moves we made was to insist that new playground at Richland Park expansion be handicap accessible and friendly. I was glad to see us be able to get a playground that handicapped children could enjoy as well.
We are currently negotiating with a Senior Sneaker company to use our facilities for a senior workou program that meets a couple of times a week.
While these are not where I would like our programs to be, it is defintely a step in the right direction.
If you have an interest in this, we are forming a Parks Advisory Committee to make recommendations to the Parks Department. If you want more information, call 325-6464. We'd love to have your suggestions.

I might be wrong, but I seem to recall that the Saddle Club has some kind of program for "Special" children. Hugs, if you are interested in volunteering, you should contact the different clubs in Portland (ex. Lions, Rotary, etc.) They might have some of these programs in place. God Bless the Children!

I would agree with your thought, but I would like to know more about how they are getting left behind. I am not sure I understand what you mean by that.
