Portland Chamber of Commerce
What's going on with the Portland Chamber of Commerce?????
There hasn't been anyone in the office since mid-December 2005. There is no sign on the door. If you call the Chamber's phone number, you get a rather unfriendly message: "This is the Portland Chamber of Commerce. For immediate assistance, call the City of Portland, 325-6776 [LOUD CLICK]."
The Chamber knew for many months that Mrs. Walker was retiring. Surely they had plenty of time to interview and hire somebody to fill the position.
The current lack of anybody in the Chamber office is a disservice to Portland. It is also a disservice to the Chamber members who pay dues.

The original blog was over a director for the chamber of commerce. I have called and spoken with Mrs. Ferritt myself one day. She was very polite and took time to solve my problem. Personally, I had rather the city take the time to find someone who is deserving of the position, such as Mrs. Ferritt, than to go through and eny-meny-miny-mo and pick a person.
As for the Mayor, we had problems before he came in office, and no matter who is in office, we will continue to have problems. It's just the way life is.
A new distribution center will be coming to Portland with 500 new jobs. I think the Mayor is busy helping Portland, and leaving the hiring of a position to others.

The mayor has no control over who the new chamber director..It is part of the city group, he does have say in this..
the former Idiot High School Football coach says no to a group of kids on a football game.
The mayor offer lights plants at richland field for this after they were turn away, this cost the city some big bucks, so the mayor don't have a say in a public place like a school football field. Do I sound upset? Yes I am it cost me in lost revenue that day.

The mayor has no control over who the new chamber director is or if the former Idiot High School Football coach says no to a group of kids on a football game.

I agree with Bob and wonder what the mayor does for this town.I do think he should step up and do his job because from what I have seen he is just wasting our tax dollars.

Johnny said: Like said before: the city should have had a replacement for Alice month's ago. That's what is wrong with this city, we're always a day late and a dollar short....
You thank the mayor for this,he to busy with other stuff "whatever that is" this mayor is one of the worst I have seen in addressing issues, from little league football tournament which cost this city big bucks that day, Move to Robertson county to a simple Director.
I hope this is remember election day, I know I will.
This towns need to elect a mayor like Nashville did with Chief Serpas, no connections just take care business, We need a leader that will not rollover to certain people.

Has a new Director been hired and on the way, or is the position still open.
If the position is still open, I suggest another posting of the job open. One that is more specific of duties, hours, etc. I thought the other advertisement was very vague.

Mrs. Ferritt does a very good job for the City of Portland. I am sure everybody appreciates that she is helping out the Chamber of Commerce.
The point is, however, that Mrs. Ferritt should not have to be answering calls for the Chamber of Commerce. Somebody should have been hired and been in place in the Chamber office before Mrs. Walker left.
Having nobody in he Chamber office for nearly a month isn't good.

I am the Receptionist for Portland City Hall:
This is the information that I have:
I will be taking calls for the Chamber until a New Director is in place. If I don't know the answer I will find out or refer you to someone that can help. I have not been given a time limit on when a New Director will be at the Chamber.
Chamber President is Barry Riggsbee. Member Nicole Minnis & Barry have been keeping me informed of updated information. The Members are now working on a few things - such as the dates for the Strawberry Festival, etc.
As for the message on the Chamber answering machine - I am told that Nicole will be recording a new message on it today or tomorrow.
This is all the information I have at this time-- if you need anything that I can assist you with please call City Hall - (615)325-6776
