The storey about the chicken car and the bar is true. I don't know if the guy who ownes it now worked at the bar. But that car was always there. I rode the school bus by there everyday when I was in grade school.

Well, actually, my mom knows this guy. I think his name is like Terri or something. He's a nice old man and he gets along with everybody. He had a blue car like it a little while back and he had a chicken in it too. I don't buy the bar story. I don't think that they would just give him the chicken. I have lived in Portland my whole life and so has my mother, and we have NEVER seen a chicken at that bar. My mother knows the Silver Dollar Bar and my friend's stepdad works across the street at Jen's Place. That is why I don't buy that story. I DO think his name is Terri or something like that. I shall get back to you on a later date with that information.

Here is a little bit of background on the chicken car, and this is just from what I have heard over the years through hearsay mostly so I don't vouch for its accuracy.
The man who drives the chicken car used to either own, run, or work at one of the bars on the north end of town. It was the one on the right where Hwy 109 dead ends into Hwy 31. There were all kinds of big animals standing in the parking lot. I remember a big horse, a pink pig, and some others.
Anyways, when the bar changed ownership or just when this guy left, he put the chicken on his El Camino. He works at the little market on top of the ridge, so you'll see it there sometimes as well.

For those of you who haven't seen the chicken car, it normally stays on Old Gallatin Road about half way between Portland and the ridge.

From Portland, head south on TN 109. Pass the stop light at TN 76.

Turn left on A.B. Wade Road. (The turn will be about 1/4 mile before you get to the yellow flashing light at the Seventh-Day Adventist church.)

Follow A.B. Wade Road until it dead ends at Old Gallatin Road (next to the railroad tracks.)

Turn right on Old Gallatin Road. About 1/2 mile later you should see Keytown Road crossing the railroad to you left. Just a few yards ahead is where the chicken car normally stays. It will be on the right side of Old Gallatin Road.

We'd love to hear the story behind the car if anybody finds out. (Sounds like a great research project for Brian at the Portland Progressive!)
