Christmas in Portland

Thanks for getting us started again, gw! Originally from Jersey, this will be our first Christmas down here in Portland! We are looking forward to many new experiences and traditions. We were wondering if there are any town traditions (caroling, lighting town Christmas tree, get togethers, services, etc) that kind of thing? I'm very interested in your own personal traditions or memories too.
We would always go to a tree farm and pick out a tree on Thanksgiving weekend. We would decorate it and play Christmas carols all day! (Are there even any tree farms around here?) I look forward to reading all your Holiday traditions and memories! jc

Just wanted to wish everyone a safe and Happy Thanksgiving!! We all have so very much to be thankful for. Regardless of anyone's circumstances, one should always take the time to count their blessings! Remember to spread the cheer to those who may not be as fortunate as others. Happy Thanksgiving all!!!

I noticed a house with a neat display in the yard at 328 Fowler Ford Road. At the traffic light at Hwy. 52 and South Russell, turn south on South Russell for 1/2 block. Turn left onto Fowler Ford Road. The house will be on your left about 3/8 mile ahead. Merry Christmas!

Has anyone seen any houses lit up yet for Christmas? I have to leave for a month and want to take my little one looking at lights(traditon).
Please let me know if you see any even if they are not done to the nines...
Thanks,
ARA

I am not sure how long ago it was started, but I remember my Mom and Dad doing it with me and my sister. Every Christmas Eve, we would get to open one gift. Every year, "Santa" would bring pajamas/nightgown that we would get to sleep in on Chrismas Eve. It wasnt anything fancy, but we always looked forward to Chrismas Eve when we could get our jammies. Now my boys do too.
We also buy our boys a Chrismas Ornament every year. Something that really represents who they are or what they like. And me and my husband also buy one for each other. Each year we gain 4 new ornaments for our tree.

Hi to all! I would love to hear your christmas traditions. I have a young family and as always it is very tight around christmas. I try to do those fun things that make it memorable for us all. I would love to hear of some special traditions that you all have that maybe I can add to our holiday fun. ........

I know there is a tree lighting ceremony on Dec. 1, and a few of the schools usually carol at those things. There is a set of Christmas activities that portland does every year such as the parade, open houses, etc. I think City Hall and the Chamber of Commerce have a complete list.

you wanted to know of any traditions we have for Xmas. My Late ex-mother-in-law started one which I try to keep going with my children. Every Xmas I wrap each person in the house, an extra Xmas present which gets hung on the Xmas tree. No one is allowed to open the "tree" present until Dec 26th (Boxing Day) this in it's own little way makes Xmas a three day event and I feel that you don't get the "What do we do now" feeling after all the presents are openned on Xmas day.
