Southern Behavior
With all this talk about people moving here and community identities, I got to thinking about what it is to be Southern. Someone posted earlier that they did not know what a "buggy" was because they were new to the area. I thought, between all the contributors to this blog, maybe we could compile a comprehensive list of dos and don'ts to Southern living. That way, it could act as a Survivor's Guide of sorts for people new to the area. these can be specific to Portland or the South in general. I'll start off with a few.
1.) If someone raises two fingers as they pass by in a car, this is common. They are waving, feel free to do likewise.
2.) The old Kerley building could be one of two places. I have heard it cited as what was the old Farmer's Bank building, where traffic court is and where Liberty Freewill meets now; and where the center where Subway is now. I have heard the old grocery store was in both places, but that was before my time.
3.) Oh yeah, we sometimes give directions using landmarks that don't exist anymore.
This should get us started. I'm sure there are a lot more out there. I got a lot more where that came from.

Hi Tammy,
We have only been here a year, but we love Portland! We came from New Jersey so it is a really big change for us. I don't really know too much about all the schools, but our boys go to Watt Hardison. I have had nothing but good experiences with them. The school seems very safe, teachers and staff are friendly and they really seem to be getting a good education. The people are extremely welcoming. They make you feel right at home and very forgiving with our many "yankee" goofs........LOL Both of my boys are involved in sports and have played soccer and baseball here in Portland. The soccer experience was great, but can't say the same about Portland Little League, but that's just our opinion, you may feel differently. The only thing we have had trouble with is finding things.....we could not find hay and especially Christmas trees! Thats just something that will take time and experience!

Hi! myself and my family will be moving to the Portland area in February and we are very excited!! We have visited the area quite a few times and my husband fell in love with Portland. I have done "some" research on the area but if anyone could enlighten me on what it's like living in Portland and raising kids there I would greatly appreciate it. We have 4 children and from what I have seen the schools are really good schools but please correct me if I am wrong.

I noticed that too! I asked if I could have a coke and the waitress asked which kind?????? LOL Oh, and I also found out recently that house shoes were slippers......My son had to wear "funky feet" for school and they said to wear house shoes. Well, when I though of house shoes, I thought of something that he would wear around the house. But that didnt seem very "funky" to me, so I had him wear two different shoes. Well, when I picked him up from Kindergarten and saw all the other kids in slippers, I knew I goofed up bigtime! I went home and talked to my neighbor and found out they were slippers. I'm still learning!!!!

I was talking to one of my friends a while back and I was telling her about some cheap sodas at H.G. Hills. She then replied to me "I don't drink coke anymore." I tried to explain that there were different kinds of sodas, then I understood. Everything that fizzes is called a Coke, whether it be Sprite, Moutain Dew, or Mellow Yellow, it's still a Coke. :-)
