Sidewalks

I would like to challenge the Portland City Council to develop a sidewalk policy for Portland.
Tons of new subdivisions are being built, yet none have sidewalks. It wouldn't cost the city any more to require sidewalks in new subdivisions.
Sidewalks would encourage walking. With gas over $2.50 per gallon, walking might be a good alternative -- but only if it is safe.
Walking is also healthy.
Many subdivisions are built as dead-end roads where school buses can't go (no place to turn around). Sidewalks would help kids get to a main road safely.
If Portland does adopt such a sidewalk policy, don't forget that the sidewalk cannot come up next to the curb. There has to be a space (say 12 inches) between the curb and the sidewalk so people will have a place to plant their rural mailboxes.
I also hope when TDOT widens TN 109 in Portland, they include sidewalks.

I think that this is a wonderful idea.I am on College St. and see kids walking in the grass to the high school every morning. That is such a busy road and very unsafe for the students.I know it is sidewalked up to a certin point but not far enough.

We have a sidewalk policy in our new subdivision regulations and these sidewalks are being put in now. Within time we hope to connect the whole town.
