Internet Access

Below are parts of a comment that a blog reader, Ruth, posted to a previous article this morning. I have added the bold.
Ruth's comments are very important. This is the kind of comment to which the leaders of Portland, Sumner County, Tennessee and the United States government need to pay close attention. Remember we are now competing with people in India, China, Mexico and other places that DO have high-speed Internet.

Hi. My husband, my 3-year-old daughter, and I just moved to Portland a few months ago. ...it is vital to my employment that I have high-speed internet access. Luckily, I live in a subdivision in which Comcast provides cable/internet services. It was THE deciding factor in our move here. If there hadn't been cable/internet access here in my neighborhood then I would have missed out on living in this great community. My family and I love our new home, but my husband would have preferred to live on the outskirts of town, but we simply could not due to the fact that I work from home and must have the capability to upload/download files quickly. I wonder how many people had to choose not to live here because they needed high-speed internet access that just isn't available in many areas.

Welcome to the city Ruth. It is certainly always nice to welcome someone new into the community. I like talking to people that move here and find out the process that broght them to Portland, what they found attractive, what other palces they considered, etc. lets us know what we are doing right.
I certainly empathize with your problem with broadband. My mom does transcription work, but lives out in the country where broadband is not available. So she has to make one or two trips to Springfield each week to pick up and drop off reports because they are too large to email on the slow service.

I would just like to welcome Ruth and her family to Portland, and to say I am glad they were able to join our community and I hope Portland will continue to improve and offer the tools needed for people to have a good life in this great town.

I'm sure that high speed internet access is a deal breaker for many people considering a move to this area. Although I have access to a cable connection, many only a mile or so down the road from me do not. In this day and age, with so many people working either full time or part time from home, and the increasing dependence on the internet for the transferral of information, it is imperative that Portland and the surrounding area have access to high speed internet.
